Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) is a rare neural tube defect that affects the terminal spinal segment, manifesting as neurological deficits and structural anomalies in the lower body. We report a case of a 31-month-old boy presenting with constipation who had long been considered to have functional constipation but was finally confirmed to have CRS. Small, flat buttocks with bilateral buttock dimples and a short intergluteal cleft were identified on close examination. Plain radiographs of the abdomen, retrospectively reviewed, revealed the absence of the distal sacrum and the coccyx. During t

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the characteristics and mechanisms of pelvic fractures in the cases of road traffic accident deaths.
METHODS: Total 65 cases of road traffic accident deaths with pelvic fracture were collected, and the sites, characteristics and injury mechanisms of pelvic fracture were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: Among the 65 cases of pelvic fracture, 38 cases of dislocation of sacroiliac joint were found, and most combined with pubis symphysis separation or fracture of pubis. In the fractures of pubis, ischium and acetabulum, linear fractures were most common, while comminuted f

Langer-Giedion syndrome (LGS) is caused by a deletion of chromosome 8q23.3-q24.11. The LGS clinical spectrum includes intellectual disability (ID), short stature, microcephaly, facial dysmorphisms, exostoses. We describe a 4-year-old girl with ID, short stature, microcephaly, distinctive facial phenotype, skeletal signs (exostoses on the left fibula, coccyx agenesis, stubby and dysmorphic sphenoid bone, osteoporosis), central nervous system malformations (hypoplastic and dysmorphic corpus callosum and septum pellucidum), pituitary gland hypoplasia and hyperreninemia. Array-CGH revealed complex

Teratoid Wilms' tumor is an unusual morphological entity characterized by a classic triphasic malignancy with predominantly heterologous tissue. The authors describe two cases of teratoid Wilms' tumor with an extrarenal site: one in a 13-year-old girl with vaginal spotting (patient 1) and another in a 1-day-old girl with a sacrococcygeal mass (patient 2). The tumors were located in the vagina and coccyx, respectively. Under the initial clinical diagnosis of sarcoma botryoides in patient 1 and teratoma in patient 2, the masses were removed. Microscopically, both tumors were composed of typical

BACKGROUND: The dorsal cutaneous appendage or so-called human tail is considered to be a cutaneous marker of underlying occult dysraphism.
CASE PRESENTATION: We are presenting an unusual case of spinal dysraphism with a bony human tail at midthoracic region occurring in a newborn baby with tethered cord (conus at L4). Physical examination was unremarkable except for a thoracic appendage and a dermal sinus over coccyx region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of spine revealed bony outgrowth arising from D7 posterior element with multiple butterfly-shaped vertebrae found at D2 D4 D8 D9 D10

Pelvic-organ prolapse is where organs such as the uterus move out of place; in some cases, they can protrude out of the body. It occurs when muscles extending from the pubic bone to the coccyx or the levator ani muscles become weak or are injured. Although it is not life-threatening, the condition can be life limiting, adversely affecting physiological processes, function and quality of life, with patients reporting years of pain, discomfort, humiliation and embarrassment. Uterine prolapse is often under-reported as women may feel resigned to a condition that is viewed as part of getting old o

The use of supportive underwear has been applied for preventing stress urinary incontinence (SUI) which is caused by descent of the bladder neck due to weakness in the pelvic floor muscles, because it is known that SUI can be improved by elevating the descended bladder neck. However, appropriate approaches to the underwear design are still being explored. In order to establish an appropriate first-order design strategy for supportive underwear, clarifying the relationship between the pressure from the underwear and the amount of elevation of the bladder neck is necessary. We constructed a fini

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify characteristic anatomical features of the posterior compartment using magnetic resonance (MR) cross-sectional anatomy and 3-dimensional (3-D) modeling.
STUDY DESIGN: Supine, static proton-density MR images of 20 nulliparas were analyzed. MR images were used to create models in a selected exemplar.
RESULTS: The compartment's upper, mid, and lower segments are best seen in the axial plane. It is bounded inferiorly by the perineal body, ventrally by the posterior vaginal wall, and dorsally by the levator ani muscles and coccyx. In the upper

We herein describe an unusual late radiation-related complication requiring surgery in a 60-year-old male affected by anal epidermoid carcinoma. The patient presented with obstructed defecation and ulcerated perianal lesions. The perianal biopsies were positive for anal squamous carcinoma. Transanal diagnostic investigations could not be performed because of anal stenosis. Computed tomography detected left inguinal lymphadenopathy and a nonhomogeneous presacral mass, infiltrating the rectal wall, the coccyx, and the sacrum. The patient underwent a colostomy, infusion of cisplatin and 5-fluorou

BACKGROUND: Coccydynia, or tailbone pain, significantly impairs patients' quality of life, affecting daily activities such as sitting and transitioning between positions. It can arise from trauma, childbirth, repetitive strain, or idiopathic causes. Although conservative treatments like physiotherapy are widely employed, their clinical effectiveness remains uncertain due to inconsistent methodologies and varied outcomes reported in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions, in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in patients with coccyd

BACKGROUND: Adenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-dependent Cushing's syndrome in infancy is extremely rare. We describe the case of a sacro-coccygeal ectopic ACTH-secreting immature teratoma in an infant who also presented the triad of defects characteristic of Currarino syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A girl was born with a large immature teratoma in the sacro-coccygeal region associated with anal atresia. At the age of 7 days, the concentration of α-fetoprotein (AFP) was above the age-specific normal range. Two non-radical surgical excisions of the tumour were performed. At the age of 7 months, s

BACKGROUND: A subset of fetuses with sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) develops hydrops caused by high-output heart failure. Identification of fetuses at risk for hydrops is important because fetal intervention may reverse the pathophysiology of the disease. To date, no reliable sonographic prognostic factors have been identified.
METHODS: An experienced sonologist reviewed the sonographic records of 17 fetuses with SCT referred to the authors' institution. Size of the tumor was measured and corrected for fetal size. The appearance of the tumor (solid versus cystic) and its vascularity were grade

The Manx cat breeds consistently for spinal dysraphism (myelodysplasia) and has spinal cord neuropathologic abnormalities similar to those of myelodysplastic humans. The results of detailed urodynamic and histochemical evaluation of 1 Manx kitten and limited anatomic study of another Manx kitten are described. Urodynamic evaluation revealed significant abnormalities of vesicourethral function: detrusor areflexia, autonomous pressure response to bladder filling, a dysfunctional proximal urethra and poor quality pelvic floor electromyographic activity. Of particular interest, catecholaminergic h

Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is the most common congenital germ cell tumor and is often detected antenatally. Advances in routine obstetric ultrasonography now allow for earlier risk stratification and identification of tumors that may precipitate potentially lethal conditions such as high-output cardiac failure, nonimmune hydrops, and maternal mirror syndrome. Antenatal risk assessment integrates tumor morphology, growth kinetics, and fetal cardiovascular status to determine the optimal management strategy for both the fetus and the pregnant patient. Surgical management relies on multidiscip

Sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) are rare in adults, and malignant transformation within these tumors is exceedingly uncommon. The risk of malignant transformation among adults can vary between 1% and 12% and increases over time with the endopelvic location. Here, we present a case of invasive adenocarcinoma with intestinal and pancreatobiliary features arising from a preexisting SCT in a 64-year-old female. The patient presented with a rapidly enlarging sacral mass and purulent drainage decades after the excision of a congenital lump in the sacral region. Imaging revealed a lytic lesion involv
