Cognitive dynamics of intertemporal choice in gambling disorder.

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction characterized by the persistence of recurrent gambling behaviors despite serious adverse consequences. One of the key features of GD is a marked inability to delay gratification and an overall impairment of decision-making mechanisms. Indeed, in intertemporal choice (ITC) tasks, GD patients usually display a marked tendency to prefer smaller-sooner over larger-later rewards (temporal discounting, TD). However, ITC represents a highly verbal/explicit measure, and as such it might not be sensitive to implicit decision biases. Here we sought to unc

[Daytime sleepiness and cognitive disorders in elderly patients].

Data on the contribution of daytime sleepiness to cognitive impairment in elderly patients are presented. Currently, diagnostic methods of daytime sleepiness, which include diaries, neurological, clinical and instrumental tools, are used. It has been shown that daytime sleepiness correlates with different types of dementia that suggests the involvement of common neurochemical mechanisms. Multiple studies report that daytime sleepiness increases the risk of dementia in elderly people. Future research of daytime sleepiness could be focused on its clinical and paraclinical presentations to facili

Brief screening for cognitive impairment in addictive disorders.

Chronic use of mind altering substances can lead to a wide variety of neuropsychological deficits, affecting the domains of attention, learning, memory, reasoning. Executive functions such as working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control may specifically be impaired. These deficits can impact engagement in effective psychosocial interventions. Mild to moderate cognitive dysfunction may not be picked up in routine clinical examination or through commonly used tests like the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). Detailed neuropsychological tests, although extremely valuable, are t

The Impact of Uremic Toxins on Cerebrovascular and Cognitive Disorders.

Individuals at all stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a higher risk of developing cognitive disorders and dementia. Stroke is also highly prevalent in this population and is associated with a higher risk of neurological deterioration, in-hospital mortality, and poor functional outcomes. Evidence from in vitro studies and in vivo animal experiments suggests that accumulation of uremic toxins may contribute to the pathogenesis of stroke and amplify vascular damage, leading to cognitive disorders and dementia. This review summarizes current evidence on the mechanisms by which uremic toxi

[Neuropsychology of Tourette's disorder: cognition, neuroimaging and creativity].

INTRODUCTION: Tourette's disorder is the result of fronto-striatal brain dysfunction affecting people of all ages, with a debut in early childhood and continuing into adolescence and adulthood. DEVELOPMENT: This article reviews the main cognitive, functional neuroimaging and creativity-related studies in a disorder characterized by an excess of dopamine in the brain. CONCLUSIONS: Given the special cerebral configuration of these patients, neuropsychological alterations, especially in executive functions, should be expected. However, the findings are inconclusive and are conditioned by factor

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Movement Disorders: A Review.

In addition to motor symptoms, patients with movement disorders often complain of psychiatric disturbances, including mood, anxiety, and impulse-control disorders and psychosis. These abnormalities are often misdiagnosed and left untreated, thus resulting in a worse prognosis and lower quality of life. Besides the use of standard pharmacological treatments, psychiatric abnormalities can be treated by means of nonpharmacological approaches. These approaches include various types of psychological therapies, the most widely used being cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). We reviewed all articles,

[CHRONODIAGNOSTICS AND CHRONOTHERAPY OF COGNITIVE DISORDERS IN ELDERLY SUBJECTS].

Cognitive disorders in elderly subjects with cerebral atherosclerosis confirmed by paraclinical methods and psychological tests are accompanied by sympathicotonia and rhythm desynchronization of RR-intervals in ECG. Biocontrolled IR laser therapy in the projection of frontal and temporal lobes of both hemispheres, internal carotid and vertebral arteries, and superior cervical node reduces sympaticotonia, restores circumhoralian and circadian rhythms of RR-intervals, improved cognitive functions and quality of sleep.

The neural bases of cognitive processes in gambling disorder.

Functional imaging is offering powerful new tools to investigate the neurobiology of cognitive functioning in people with and without psychiatric conditions like gambling disorder. Based on similarities between gambling and substance-use disorders in neurocognitive and other domains, gambling disorder has recently been classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edn) (DSM-5) as a behavioral addiction. Despite the advances in understanding, there exist multiple unanswered questions about the pathophysiology underlying gambling disorder and the promise for transl

Inflammatory mediators of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have pointed to neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and neurotrophic factors as key mediators in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. Little is however known about the cascade of biological episodes underlying the cognitive deficits observed during the acute and euthymic phases of bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this review is to assess the potential association between cognitive impairment and biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress and neurotrophic activity in BD. METHODS: Scopus (all databases), Pubmed and Ovid Medline were systematically searched with n

[Cognitive behavioral therapy of somatoform autonomic disorders].

The treatment of a somatoform autonomic dysfunction with a psychogenic form of irritable bowel syndrome will be demonstrated on the example of a 16-year-old girl (Sandra) using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). After a comprehensive psychological assessment and identification of the dysfunctional cognitive and behaviour patterns, CBT treatment methods will be described regarding the following problem areas: biased somatic attribution, selective perception of interoceptive stimuli, catastrophization as a thought pattern, avoidance behaviour and maintaining factors within the family system.

Social anxiety disorder and shame cognitions in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is surprisingly prevalent among people with psychosis and exerts significant impact on social disability. The processes that underlie its development remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between shame cognitions arising from a stigmatizing psychosis illness and perceived loss of social status in co-morbid SAD in psychosis. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study. A sample of individuals with SAD (with or without psychosis) was compared with a sample with psychosis only and healthy controls on shame proneness, sham

Body-related behaviours and cognitions in the eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Different body-related behaviours and cognitions (checking, avoidance, comparison, display) have been shown to be related to unhealthy eating attitudes in a non-clinical sample. AIMS: This study tested whether the use of body-related behaviours is higher in eating-disordered women than in non-clinical women. It also examined whether the use of body-related behaviours is associated with psychological characteristics (particularly anxiety, depression and narcissistic characteristics), controlling for age and eating pathology. METHOD: Ninety-nine adult women with diagnosed eating di

Dissociation and social cognition in schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

While there is emerging evidence that dissociation is linked with trauma history and possibly symptoms in schizophrenia, it remains unclear whether dissociation represents a symptom dimensions in its own right in schizophrenia and as such is uniquely related to other features of illness. To explore this issue the current study sought to find out whether dissociation was uniquely related to an index of social cognition closely linked to social functioning, namely affect recognition. We hypothesized that dissociation would be linked with affect recognition because symptoms of dissociation may un

Drug targets for cognitive enhancement in neuropsychiatric disorders.

The investigation of novel drug targets for treating cognitive impairments associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders remains a primary focus of study in central nervous system (CNS) research. Many promising new therapies are progressing through preclinical and clinical development, and offer the potential of improved treatment options for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) as well as other disorders that have not been particularly well treated to date like the cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia (CIAS). Among targets under investigation, ch

[Cognitive models in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that is currently identified almost exclusively by the simultaneous presence of a set of symptoms that tend to coincide in a more or less homogenous manner in a large number of patients. Yet, to be able to advance in the consolidation of a model of ADHD, based on genetic, neurofunctional and cognitive features, the symptoms need to be understood as being the result of one or more nuclear deficiencies. DEVELOPMENT: This work reviews the most significant and up-to-date proposals put forward with the aim of providing a
