Nasal Caffeine Thermo-Sensitive In Situ Gel for Enhanced Cognition after Sleep-Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine abundant in coffee has a strong excitation effect on the central nerve system (CNS). METHODS: To combat the adverse effects of sleep deprivation on physical and mental health, this article designed a new nasal temperature-sensitive gel loaded with caffeine, whose effects of awakening and improving cognition in sleep-deprived rats were evaluated. RESULTS: It was found that the caffeine thermo-sensitive in situ gel (TSG) stayed in the nasal cavity for a longer time and increased the contact time between the drugs and the nasal mucosa, which made it possible for caffeine TS

Improvement of nutritional status enhances cognitive and physical functions in older adults with orthostatic hypotension.

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition may be an important risk factor for orthostatic hypotension (OH). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between malnutrition and OH, and the effect of nutritional improvement on cognitive functions and gait-balance parameters in patients with OH. METHODS: A total of 692 patients were included in the study. The Head-up Tilt Table Test and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were implemented for participants. Patients underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment, including a neurocognitive evaluation and physical performance. After 6 mo, the particip

Exposure-enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescents with binge eating: An initial case series.

Binge eating (BE) often develops during adolescence and is associated with deleterious psychological and physical consequences. Current treatments for adolescents achieve suboptimal results, likely due to failure to adequately address fear of weight gain (FOWG) which maintains BE. Thus, exposure treatment (the most powerful intervention for fear) may be a promising approach. However, exposure treatment has only minimally tested in adults with BE and never tested in adolescents. Thus, the current study is the first to evaluate a 4-session exposure module within a 12-session standard cognitive b

Enhancing cognitive control training with transcranial direct current stimulation: a systematic parameter study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive control (CC) is an important prerequisite for goal-directed behaviour and efficient information processing. Impaired CC is associated with reduced prefrontal cortex activity and various mental disorders, but may be effectively tackled by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-enhanced training. However, study data are inconsistent as efficacy depends on stimulation parameters whose implementations vary widely between studies. OBJECTIVE: We systematically tested various tDCS parameter effects (anodal/cathodal polarity, 1/2 mA stimulation intensity, left/right pref

Neurovascular and cortical responses to hyperoxia: enhanced cognition and electroencephalographic activity despite reduced perfusion.

KEY POINTS: Extreme aviation is accompanied by ever-present risks of hypobaric hypoxia and decompression sickness. Neuroprotection against those hazards is conferred through fractional inspired oxygen ( FI,O2 ) concentrations of 60-100% (hyperoxia). Hyperoxia reduces global cerebral perfusion (gCBF), increases reactive oxygen species within the brain and leads to cell death within the hippocampus. However, an understanding of hyperoxia's effect on cortical activity and concomitant levels of cognitive performance is lacking. This limits our understanding of whether hyperoxia could lower the bra

Challenges and opportunities for enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) in light of COVID-19.

UNLABELLED: In the past few weeks, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has dramatically expanded across the world. To limit the spread of COVID-19 and its negative consequences, many countries have applied strict social distancing rules. In this dramatic situation, people with eating disorders are at risk of their disorder becoming more severe or relapsing. The risk comes from multiple sources including fears of infection and the effects of social isolation, as well as the limited availability of adequate psychological and psychiatric treatments. A potential practical solution to address some

Adrenergic Drugs Blockers or Enhancers for Cognitive Decline ? What to Choose for Alzheimer's Disease Patients?

The adrenergic system has an important role in normal central nervous system function as well as in brain disease. The locus coeruleus, the main source of norepinephrine in brain, is involved in the regulation of learning and memory, reinforcement of sleep-wake cycle and synaptic plasticity. In Alzheimer's disease, locus coeruleus degeneration is observed early in the course of the disease, years before the onset of clinical cognitive signs, with neurofibrillary detected at the stage of mild cognitive impairment, preceding amyloid deposition. Thus, in the last years, a great interest has grown

Yoga-enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy (Y-CBT) for anxiety management: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, but there is still room for improvement. The aim of the present study was to examine the potential benefit of enriching CBT with kundalini yoga (Y-CBT). Participants consisted of treatment resistant clients at a community mental health clinic. A total of 32 participants enrolled in the study and 22 completed the programme. After the Y-CBT intervention, pre-post comparisons showed statistically significant improvements in state and trait anxiety, depression, panic, sleep and quality of li

Pharmacology of cognitive enhancers for exposure-based therapy of fear, anxiety and trauma-related disorders.

Pathological fear and anxiety are highly debilitating and, despite considerable advances in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy they remain insufficiently treated in many patients with PTSD, phobias, panic and other anxiety disorders. Increasing preclinical and clinical evidence indicates that pharmacological treatments including cognitive enhancers, when given as adjuncts to psychotherapeutic approaches [cognitive behavioral therapy including extinction-based exposure therapy] enhance treatment efficacy, while using anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines as adjuncts can undermine long-term treatme

The Evolution of "Enhanced" Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Eating Disorders: Learning From Treatment Nonresponse.

In recent years there has been widespread acceptance that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa. The cognitive behavioral treatment of bulimia nervosa (CBT-BN) was first described in 1981. Over the past decades the theory and treatment have evolved in response to a variety of challenges. The treatment has been adapted to make it suitable for all forms of eating disorder-thereby making it "transdiagnostic" in its scope- and treatment procedures have been refined to improve outcome. The new version of the treatment, termed enhanced CBT (CBT-E) also addre

Delirium in early-stage alzheimer's disease: enhancing cognitive reserve as a possible preventive measure.

Delirium is a disorder of acute onset with fluctuating symptoms and is character ized by inattention, disorganized thinking and altered levels of consciousness. The risk for delirium is greatest in individual with dementia, and the incidence of both is increasing worldwide because of the aging of our population. Although s clinical trials have tested interventions f delirium prevention in individuals without dementia, little is known about the m anisms for the prevention of delirium i early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD). Th purpose of this article is to explore ways o preventing delirium and

The cognitive-enhancing properties of modafinil are limited in non-sleep-deprived middle-aged volunteers.

Modafinil is a selective wakefulness-promoting agent that has been shown to enhance cognitive performance under conditions of sleep deprivation but which has equivocal effects in normal young volunteers. In a double-blind parallel group design study, 45 non-sleep-deprived middle-aged volunteers (20 men and 25 women, aged 50-67 years) were randomly allocated to receive two capsules containing placebo, 100 or 200 mg modafinil, and 3 h later they completed 100 mm visual analogue scales of mood and bodily symptoms, before and after an extensive battery of cognitive tests [pen and paper and the Cam

Enhancing cognitive skills and attitude toward science through 5E-based STEM education.

This study examined the association between an interactive 5E-based STEM education framework and cognitive skills and attitudes toward science among seventh-grade female students using a one-group pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental design. By integrating inquiry-based learning with real-world applications, the framework aimed to cultivate scientific literacy, critical thinking, and student engagement. Three instruments were employed: (a) an academic achievement test based on Bloom's taxonomy (18 multiple-choice questions, Cronbach's α = 0.724), (b) a science basic process skills test (Cronb

Peaks2Image: Reconstructing fMRI maps from stereotactic coordinates to enhance cognitive meta-analysis.

To integrate novel findings and reach a consensus on the neural correlates of cognitive functions, human neuroscientists have relied heavily on the literature to formulate, validate, or refine hypotheses. Since thousands of publications have reported the coordinates of regions identified in brain mapping, the community has largely performed meta-analyses based on these coordinates. A known problem with coordinate-based meta-analyses is that they rely on limited information from each publication, so terms appearing in few publications are not reliably mapped. Recently, the use of public images

Enhancing Cognitive Functions of Older Adults With Software Robot: Longitudinal Exploratory Field Study.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of dementia continues to rise and demands scalable, nonpharmacological interventions. Digital cognitive training has expanded, but many older adults, who have limited digital literacy, struggle to sustain use. We designed an intervention that integrates social interaction, reward-based engagement, and an artificial intelligence (AI) conversational agent, which aims to reduce these barriers and support continuous participation. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether a 12-week digital cognitive training program improves cognitive function in older adults. It al

Cognitive reinforcement: capturing tacit knowledge and enhancing expertise with a biofeedback interface for visual attention.

Objective.Tacit or implicit knowledge refers to know-how that experts possess but often cannot articulate, codify, or explicitly transfer to others. This can present a significant challenge for learning, skill acquisition, and knowledge transfer across various domains, including those that rely on apprenticeships, craftsmanship, sports, and medical imaging diagnosis. This study explores whether expert tacit knowledge can be accessed and leveraged using an electroencephalography (EEG) and gaze-informed biofeedback interface to enhance expertise transfer and training.Approach.We designed an imag
