Global epidemiology of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST): A systematic review of population-based cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are rare, yet the most common mesenchymal tumour within the digestive tract. Lack of diagnostic criteria and no specific code in the ICD system has prevented epidemiological evaluation except from overt malignant cases in the past. A global estimate of incidence and disease patterns has thus not been available. METHODS: A systematic literature search of all available population-based studies on GIST published between January 2000 and December 2014 were reviewed. Descriptive epidemiological data are presented. RESULTS: The search found 29 s

Effects of infant health on family food insecurity: evidence from two U.S. birth cohort studies.

Extremely little is known about the effects of health on food insecurity despite strong associations between the two and a theoretical basis for this avenue of inquiry. This study uses data from two national birth cohort studies in the U.S., the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (N = ∼9400) from 2001 to 2003 and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2458) from 1998 to 2003, to estimate the effects of poor infant health on child and household food insecurity and explore the potential buffering effects of public programs that provide food, healthcare, and cash assista…

Immortal time bias in drug safety cohort studies: spontaneous abortion following nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Experimental research of drug safety in pregnancy is generally not feasible because of ethical issues. Therefore, most of the inf … time for each drug and the extent of the bias. CONCLUSION: Immortal time bias can easily occur in cohort studies assessing the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes following exposure to drugs. One way to prevent such a bias is by defining exposure only from the time of exposure during follow-up onward using a time-varying exposure analysis.

Personal barriers to antiretroviral therapy adherence: case studies from a rural Uganda prospective clinical cohort.

BACKGROUND: Although good adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential for successful treatment outcomes, some patients may have specific personal barriers to ART adherence. OBJECTIVES: To study specific personal barriers to ART adherence. METHODS: Quantitative data on patients' health status, ART adherence, CD4 cell counts and viral loads were collected, and qualitative data on life experiences of five patients with poor ART outcomes and adherence were also collected. RESULTS: Out of 35 patients with poor immunological and virological ART outcomes, 17 (49%) also had poor ART adhe

Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD): Fulfilling the need for longitudinal observational studies in COPD.

Awareness, diagnosis and treatment of COPD, compared to other major causes of death, remains far too low. This article describes the protocol objectives, design and the approaches taken in the Canadian Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study, an epidemiological and integrated research. The CanCOLD study aims at better understanding heterogeneity of COPD presentation and disease progression. We hypothesize that individuals with unfavourable COPD "phenotypes" and subjects at-risk (ever smokers) with unhealthy lifestyle habits, environmental/work exposure, or co-morbidities will have inc

Lessons learned from phagocytic function studies in a large cohort of patients with recurrent infections.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on the relationship between demographic characteristics, specific clinical manifestations, and neutrophil dysfunction, guiding physicians to decide which clinical signs and symptoms are a code for an underlying phagocytic disorder. METHODS: The data over a 21-year period of all adult and pediatric patients referred to our Laboratory for Leukocyte Functions with recurrent pyogenic infections were analyzed. Neutrophil function studies included chemotaxis, superoxide production (SOP), bactericidal activity (BA), and specific studies in case of suspected pri

The profile of Rafsanjan Cohort Study.

Owning the largest human-made jungle of pistachio, the second largest copper mine, and being located on the trade route of opium transit, distinguish Rafsanjan from many other cities in Iran. The environmental exposures and lifestyle factors associated with these characteristics of Rafsanjan, have raised concern about possible health outcomes for individuals living in and around this city. Thus, local health authorities initiated the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), as part of the prospective epidemiological research studies in IrAN (PERSIAN). RCS is a population-based prospective cohort of men a

The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort study (SPHYNCS): Study protocol for a prospective, multicentre cohort observational study.

Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a disorder with well-established markers and a suspected autoimmune aetiology. Conversely, the narcoleptic borderland (NBL) disorders, including narcolepsy type 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, insufficient sleep syndrome and hypersomnia associated with a psychiatric disorder, lack well-defined markers and remain controversial in terms of aetiology, diagnosis and management. The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort Study (SPHYNCS) is a comprehensive multicentre cohort study, which will investigate the clinical picture, pathophysiology and long-term course of

Nepal Family Cohort study: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The Nepal Family Cohort study uses a life course epidemiological approach to collect comprehensive data on children's and their parents' environmental, behavioural and metabolic risk factors. These factors can affect the overall development of children to adulthood and the onset of specific diseases. Among the many risk factors, exposure to air pollution and lifestyle factors during childhood may impact lung development and function, leading to the early onset of respiratory diseases. The global incidence and prevalence of respiratory diseases are rapidly increasing, with the rat

Acrylamide cohort mortality study.

The mortality experience of 371 employees assigned to acrylamide monomer and polymerisation operations was examined with particular emphasis on cancers at sites identified from animal studies such as the central nervous system, thyroid gland, other endocrine glands, and mesotheliomas. A total of 29 deaths was observed up until 1982 (38.0 expected). No statistically significant excesses were noted in the total cohort and no deaths were found for the hypothesised sites of cancer. The observed deaths in the total cohort for the all cancers category were somewhat in excess (11 v 7.9); however, thi
