The etiopathogenesis of otosclerosis is still controversially discussed. The major hypotheses discussed are a viral infection on a genetic background and an (autoimmune) collagen disease. The aim of our study was to investigate by immunohistochemistry the expression pattern of collagens within the otosclerotic focus. A case of collagenous colitis is reported. A 48 year old female who had been complaining of mild diarrhea had been under medication for a gastric ulcer. Colonoscopy revealed almost normal appearance of the colonic mucosa except for one hyperplastic polyp of the cecum. A thirteen and a half year old girl and her father were both investigated because of chronic watery diarrhoea and growth failure or weight loss. Both were diagnosed as having coeliac disease. In the daughter, collagenous colitis was also diagnosed. The father had colonic collagen deposition with inflammatory changes as well. Both improved on gluten-free diets, but colonic collagen deposition persisted.

We describe a case of collagenous colitis in a young man with coeliac disease who had responded clinically and histologically to a gluten-free diet three years previously. The collagenous colitis responded initially to oral corticosteroid therapy and he is now asymptomatic (and with normal rectal mucosa) on oral mesalazine. Collagenous colitis should be considered in the coeliac patient with diarrhoea despite adherence to a gluten-free diet.

In our practice, blepharitis is one of the more common eyelid abnormalities and one of the most difficult to treat. We introduce a new treatment that we have found to be helpful. A prospective study was devised to test its efficacy using 20 patients distributed randomly into three different treatment protocols. Our new protocol, using lyophilized collagen pads as adjunctive treatment, significantly improved results compared with controls. We had a 79% improvement in symptomatology and a 78% improvement in objective findings.

Collagenous colitis is an unusual cause of chronic, watery diarrhea. To characterize this disease, we reviewed biopsy specimens and the clinical records of 17 patients (9 women and 8 men) with this diagnosis. Intermittent diarrhea with symptom-free intervals lasting years was found in 7 of the 17 patients. Two patients had incapacitating arthralgias, and nine had a mild weight loss.
