BACKGROUND: Primary colonic and dedifferentiated liposarcomas are both remarkably rare. This work describes a case of primary colonic well-differentiated/dedifferentiated liposarcoma and reviews the clinical characteristics and current therapies for liposarcoma tumors.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with a submucosal tumor of the ascending colon. Clinical analysis by ultrasound colonoscopy and computed tomography revealed a partially ossified tumor with irregular edges continuous with the muscular layer. High F-18 deoxyglucose uptake was detected by positr

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of action of bisacodyl in the unprepared human colon remains unclear.
AIM: To evaluate the effect of oral bisacodyl on the overall and regional colonic transit in humans.
METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of 25 healthy participants, effects of oral bisacodyl (5 mg p.o. per day) and placebo on colonic transit were compared. A validated scintigraphy method was used to measure colonic transit. The primary transit endpoints, ascending colon emptying t(1/2) and geometric centre of colon isotope at 24 h (overall transit), were compared (Wilc

INTRODUCTION: We experienced a rare case of right-sided large bowl obstruction (LBO) of the colon caused by chronic diverticulitis, which was challenging to diagnose.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A young male was admitted to our department with a fever, diarrhea, and right-sided lateral abdominal pain for several days. CT showed a thickened ascending colon wall with stenosis and adjacent retroperitoneal inflammation without marked diverticula. The next day, he developed severe abdominal pain, and perforation was suspected. We chose the "interval definitive surgery"; at that time, intestinal decompre

The distribution of regional lymph node metastases in carcinomas of the cecum, ascending colon, and transverse colon follows the vascular distribution in the ileocolic mesentery, ascending mesocolon, and transverse mesocolon. The location of these metastatic nodes can be recognized on CT scans when the anatomy of the vessels in the ileocolic mesentery and mesocolon is well understood. This knowledge is important in the preoperative staging of carcinomas of the colon for curative surgery and in the early detection of recurrent nodal disease after curative surgery.

The patient was a 70-year-old man. The patient had progressive anemia while taking 10 mg/day of prednisolone and 100 mg/day of mizoribine orally for bullous pemphigoid, a colonoscopy diagnosed ascending colon cancer. Adenocarcinoma, Group 5 was detected on biopsy. Abdominal computed tomography showed no metastases. The tumor was diagnosed as ascending colon cancer, cT4aN0M0, cStage Ⅱb. We performed laparoscopic right hemicolectomy and D3 dissection. Histopathological examination revealed pT3N0M0, pStage Ⅱa. In the present report, we describe a case of the ascending colon cancer with bullous pe

Schwannomas are peripheral nerve sheath tumours that can present as a rare tumour of GI tract, and even more uncommonly within the colon. We present a case of colonic schwannoma in an asymptomatic patient identified on surveillance colonoscopy. The tumour is of mesenchymal origin and is often challenging to diagnose prior to surgical resection. Endoscopy usually fails to provide adequate sample and diagnosis is usually confirmed on immunohistochemistry.

A colonic intussusception caused by an intraluminal lipoma is a rare disease in adults, in whom it usually has a definite organic cause. In fact, it is either caused by a benign or a malignant condition, both of which occur at similar rates. However, little literature is available on laparoscopic procedures for use in cases of adult colonic intussusceptions. Recently, a 52-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain of one-month duration. Abdominal computed tomography showed an intussusception with a fat-containing mass in the right hepatic area. Colonoscopy showed a colon

INTRODUCTION: Internal hernias through the foramen of Winslow are rare events and constitute 8% of internal hernias but only 0.1% of all abdominal hernias.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-year-old man presented with upper abdominal pain, distention and vomiting, and was shown on CT scan to have the right colon and cecum herniating into the lesser sac through the foramen of Winslow. This diagnosis was confirmed at laparotomy as well as a midgut volvulus and right hemicolectomy was performed because of ischemic changes of the cecum.
DISCUSSION: Six developmental abnormalities may result in internal

Micropapillary carcinoma (MC) has been recently recognized to be a rare but distinctive variant of adenocarcinoma. At present, only a limited number of colorectal MC cases have been reported. We present a case of MC of the ascending colon with distant metastasis. A 61-year-old female patient was hospitalized with a complaint of abdominal pain. A diagnostic work-up revealed cancer of the ascending colon with multiple lung metastases. The patient underwent a right hemicolectomy with lymph node dissection. A peritoneal nodule was observed in the abdominal cavity during surgery, and this nodule wa

We reported a case of metastatic tumor to the diaphragm discovered by rising CEA after operation of ascending colon cancer. A 72-year-old female underwent right hemicolectomy on January 2005. After discharge, she received adjuvant chemotherapy by S-1, but a rise of CEA was shown. Based on exploratory findings, laparotomy was done with the diagnosis of metastasis to the liver(S7). A tumor was present in the right diaphragm, and contacted the liver(S7). Partial resection of the right diaphragm was performed. The removed specimen revealed the same histological findings of the last operated ascend

Ischemic colitis is the most common form of intestinal ischemia. It most commonly involves the left side of the colon presenting with acute onset of abdominal pain followed by bloody diarrhea. Involvement of only the right or ascending colon is an infrequent occurrence. Because this problem is less recognized than its counterpart involving the left colon, the correct diagnosis and management may not be readily considered. We present a case of ischemic colitis presenting as a distal small bowel obstruction with emphasis on evaluation and management of this unusual clinical problem.

In this study, a geometric recognition of the ascending colons of some domestic animals such as pig, ruminants (only the ansa spiralis coli) and dog is presented. The ascending colon of these animals can be considered a tubular shape along a special curve.

PURPOSE: The infrequency of right-sided colonic diverticulitis prompted this presentation of our experiences, with emphasis on the diagnostic aspects.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts and documentation regarding 20 patients who underwent surgery for diverticulitis of the caecum and/or ascending colon over 22 years were reviewed.
RESULTS: Eleven patients underwent pre-operative instrumental examinations: right-sided diverticulitis was recognized in five patients (two by barium enema, two by both ultrasonography and computerized tomography, one by all three examinations) and was suspected in anoth
