Uptake of the female condom (FC) in the United States has historically been low; inadequate promotion may be one barrier faced by potential users. We performed a content analysis of state and municipal health department Web sites to describe how the FC is being promoted for pregnancy and disease prevention. We found that only a slim majority (60.8%) of health department Web sites mention the FC at all and those that do include numerous inaccuracies in their messaging. These inaccuracies may discourage uptake of the FC or have a detrimental impact on the experience when using the product for th

The 2002 World Health Report warns that the allies of poverty and ignorance are joining forces with the new formidable enemies of health. This describes the epidemiologic transition of burden of disease from infectious and parasitic diseases to that of noncommunicable diseases. All parts of the world, with the possible exception of sub-Saharan Africa, have well-established epidemics of coronary heart disease and stroke. Hypertension contributes significantly to mortality everywhere and is a leading global problem. Education and wealth have strong influences on the epidemiologic transition and

BACKGROUND: As the burden of opioid use disorder (OUD) increases in low- and middle-income countries, expanding access to medications for opioid use disorder, including methadone maintenance therapy, is essential. Decentralized models of methadone service delivery aim to improve treatment access, reduce costs for clients and burdens on health systems, and deliver more client-centered care. However, questions remain about the feasibility, acceptability, and implementation of decentralized models for methadone delivery, particularly in Africa. We qualitatively examined client and provider perspe

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous connectedness is an impetus for health, well-being, self-confidence, cultural preservation, and communal thriving. When this connectedness is disrupted, the beliefs, values, and ways of life that weave Indigenous communities together is threatened. In the Spring of 2020, the COVID-19 virus crept into Tribal Nations across the United States and exacerbated significant health-related and educational inequities. The first case of COVID-19, or Dikos Ntsaaígíí-19 in the Diné (Navajo) language, arrived in the Southwest in March 2020. The virus quickly spread amongst Diné com

BACKGROUND: Postnatal care (PNC) for the mother and infant is a neglected area, even for women who give birth in a health facility. Currently, there is very little evidence on the determinants of use of postnatal care from health facilities in Tanzania.
METHODS: This study examined the role of individual and community-level variables on the use of postnatal health services, defined as a check up from a heath facility within 42 days of delivery, using multilevel logistic regression analysis. We analyzed data of 1931 women, who had delivered in the preceding 2-14 months, from a two-stage househ

1. Bioterrorism is the intentional release of a biological agent--bacterial, viral, or genetically altered--to instill fear or create chaos, massive casualities, illness, and death in humans, animals, or plants. 2. The threat of bioterrorism is real. Although every community is vulnerable, terrorists seek densely populated, highly visible targets. 3. Occupational and environmental health nurses must to be able to recognize and report signs and symptoms of an early bioweapons outbreak in their workplaces and communities. Only thorough preparedness and planning will result in effective mitigatio

In the past 10 years, several significant national initiatives have released updated strategies and guidelines to improve public health practice specifically as it relates to community health improvement. These initiatives include the 2016 release of Public Health 3.0 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), which defines the concept of the Chief Health Strategist as a leader in the community's health improvement efforts. In addition, in 2022, the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) released guidance for community healt

The 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease outbreak revealed the fragility of the Guinean public health infrastructure. As a result, the Guinean Ministry of Health is collaborating with international partners to improve compliance with the International Health Regulations and work toward the Global Health Security Agenda goals, including enhanced case- and community-based disease surveillance. We assessed the case-based disease surveillance system during October 1, 2015-March 31, 2016, in the Boffa prefecture of Guinea. We conducted onsite interviews with public health staff at the peripheral (health c

INTRODUCTION: Lessons learned from the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak enabled Liberia to develop a health plan for strengthening public health capacity against potential public health threats. risk communication is one of the core pillars that provide life-saving information and knowledge for the public to take preventive and proactive actions against public health threats. These were applied in response to the post-ebola meningococcal septicemia and meningitis outbreaks in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties. This paper documents risk communication experiences in these post-ebola outbreaks in Li

BACKGROUND: Linkages (i.e. partnerships or referral pathways) between chronic pain management services and community resources can strengthen the continuum of care and address unmet needs, although implementing these connections is challenging.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to conduct exploratory, strategic planning to inform linkages between pain self-management within multidisciplinary rehabilitation and community resources that support the quality of life of individuals with chronic pain.
METHODS: Using a participatory design, the deliberative dialogue methodology actively engaged indiv

Prevention and management of delayed transfer of older people from hospital to community settings is an enduring issue in industrialised societies and is the subject of many recent policies in the United Kingdom. A deeper, evidence-based understanding of the complex organizational and interprofessional issues which contribute to delays in transfer has emerged in recent years. Despite this, and the relative success of recent policies, two recent reviews of the area highlight the lack of studies on patients' perspectives. We sought to address this deficit by using conversational interviews and a

BACKGROUND: Goal setting for persons within health and social care environments can be a challenging task; although health and social care settings aim to address a person's care needs, the literature tends to focus on health. Person-centred care should encompass the goals/needs/wants of the person, whether these goals focus on career, relationship, and/or health domains. To understand how a person-centred participatory goal setting process is carried out in a care environment, we used an integrated knowledge translation approach.
METHODS: We conducted 11 semi-structured interviews with commu

People released from prison experience high health needs and face barriers to health care in the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people released early from California state prisons to under-resourced communities. Historically, there has been minimal care coordination between prisons and community primary care. The Transitions Clinic Network (TCN), a community-based non-profit organization, supports a network of California primary care clinics in adopting an evidence-based model of care for returning community members. In 2020, TCN linked the California Department of Corrections and Re

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the potential for community conversations to strengthen positive responses to HIV in resource-poor environments. Community conversations are an intervention method through which local people work with a facilitator to collectively identify local strengths and challenges and brainstorm potential strategies for solving local problems.
METHODS: We conducted 18 community conversations (with six groups at three points in time) with a total of 77 participants in rural Zimbabwe (20% HIV positive). Participants were invited to reflect on how they were responding to the

The control of parasitic diseases of humans has been undertaken since the aetiology and natural history of the infections was recognized and the deleterious effects on human health and well-being appreciated by policy makers, medical practitioners and public health specialists. However, while some parasitic infections such as malaria have proved difficult to control, as defined by a sustained reduction in incidence, others, particularly helminth infections can be effectively controlled. The different approaches to control from diagnosis, to treatment and cure of the clinically sick patient, to

Fenway Community Health was founded by community activists in 1971 in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, Mass, and within a decade had rapidly expanded its medical services for gay men in response to the AIDS epidemic. Increased expertise and cultural competence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) care led to expansion of medical services to address broader community concerns, ranging from substance use to parenting issues to domestic and homophobic violence, as well as specialized programs for lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals. Fenway began as a grassroots neigh
