Community health workers can improve child growth of antenatally-depressed, South African mothers: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal antenatal depression has long-term consequences for children's health. We examined if home visits by community health workers (CHW) can improve growth outcomes for children of mothers who are antenatally depressed. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial of all pregnant, neighbourhood women in Cape Town, South Africa. Almost all pregnant women (98 %, N = 1238) were recruited and assessed during pregnancy, two weeks post-birth (92 %) and 6 months post-birth (88 %). Pregnant women were randomized to either: 1) Standard Care (SC), which provided routine antenatal care…

Community health worker-supported oral health promotion in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review of roles, interventions, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are among the most prevalent conditions worldwide and disproportionately affect populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The shortage and maldistribution of the oral health workforce have widened inequalities in prevention and treatment. Task-sharing through community health workers (CHWs) has been promoted as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy for extending services to underserved populations; however, evidence on their roles in oral health promotion in LMICs remains fragmented. This scoping review mapped evidence on CHW-supported oral health p…

"We're Worse off Now Than During COVID": Community Health Workers' Perspectives on Intensifying Immigration Enforcement as Cascading Crisis.

Scholars have not conventionally examined the COVID-19 pandemic and immigration enforcement together or as having similar dimensions. We use the framework of cascading crisis to assess the impact of the cascading pandemic-immigration enforcement crisis on Latine immigrants' health from the perspectives of community health workers (CHWs) deeply embedded in immigrant communities. This qualitative study was carried out in a large metropolitan region across two phases: December 2024-January 2025 (focused on the pandemic period, January 2020-May 2023) and April-May 2025 (focused after the official …

The Vicious Worm education tool improves the knowledge of community health workers on Taenia solium cysticercosis in Rwanda.

The pork tapeworm Taenia solium causes human taeniasis and cysticercosis when ingested as viable cysts and eggs, respectively. Despite its high health burden in low-income countries, knowledge of the parasite in endemic areas such as Rwanda is often limited. Here, we assess whether The Vicious Worm education software can increase knowledge in endemic areas of Rwanda. A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted to evaluate knowledge about T. solium among community health workers trained using the Vicious Worm education software. Knowledge was assessed before, immediately after, and four…

House calls by community health workers and public health nurses to improve adherence to isoniazid monotherapy for latent tuberculosis infection: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patient adherence to isoniazid (INH) monotherapy for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) has been suboptimal despite its proven efficacy. Various strategies have been studied to improve adherence, but all have been based at a clinic or treatment program. At the Santa Clara Valley Tuberculosis Clinic, it was our practice to refer a subset of high-risk LTBI patients to the Public Health Department for monthly follow-up at home instead of at the clinic. Our goal was to assess whether house calls by community health workers and public health nurses affected INH adherence or frequency …
