The Interrelation of Neurological and Psychological Symptoms of COVID-19: Risks and Remedies.

COVID-19 has catastrophically affected the world's panoramic view of human well-being in terms of healthcare and management. With the increase in the number of cases worldwide, neurological symptoms and psychological illnesses from COVID-19 have increasingly upsurged. Mental health illness and affective disorders, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, phobia, and panic disorders, are highly impacted due to social distress. The COVID-19 pandemic not only affected people with pre-existing mental and affective illnesses, but also healthy individuals with anxiety, worrying,

Partial reinforcement effects on acquisition and extinction of a conditioned taste aversion.

Four experiments with rat subjects asked whether a partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) occurs in taste aversion learning. The question has received little attention in the literature, and to our knowledge no taste aversion experiment has previously demonstrated a PREE. In each of the present experiments, experimental groups received a taste mixed in drinking water for 20 min; such taste exposures were sometimes paired with a lithium chloride (LiCl) injection and sometimes not. Control groups received only taste-LiCl pairings. There was evidence that each reinforced and non-reinforce

Is premenstrual dysphoria a variant of panic disorder? A review.

Patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and patients with panic disorder (PD) both experience high rates of panic attacks in laboratory panic provocation studies. Recently, this shared elevated rate of challenge-induced panic has received increasing attention. Researchers have suggested that PMDD and panic disorder may share a pathophysiological or psychobiological link. The purpose of this paper is to review the findings from PMDD challenge studies and the theories advanced to connect PMDD to panic disorder. Taken together, the results of the PMDD challenge studies confirm that a

Prediction, perception, and psychosis: Application of associative learning theories to schizophrenia research.

In recent years, there have been significant advances in our understanding of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions. This progress has been significantly aided by the use of associative learning-based approaches in human subjects and preclinical animal models. Here, we first review experimental research focusing on the abnormal processing of absent stimuli using three different conditioning phenomena: conditioned hallucinations, mediated conditioning, and trace conditioning. We then review studies investigating the ability to reduce focal processing of ph

Aversive memory conditioning induces fluoxetine-dependent anxiety-like states in the crab Neohelice granulata.

The interactions between memory processes and emotions are complex. Our previous investigations in the crab Neohelice led to an adaptation of the affective extension of sometimes opponent processes (AESOP) model. The model proposes that emotions generate separate emotive memory traces, and that the unfolding of emotional responses is a crucial component of the behavioral expression of reactivated memories. Here, we show that an aversive conditioning, that used changes in an innate escape response to an aversive visual stimulus, induced an emotional behavior that endured beyond the stimuli: the

Behavioral factors in the etiology of asthma.

Evidence for the role of behavior in the etiology of asthma is reviewed here. Behavioral factors have not convincingly been shown to play a part in the inception of asthma. It has been suggested that asthma attacks can be precipitated by conditioning. Previous experiences leading to the expectation that an attack may occur can be regarded as a behavioral factor which may trigger an attack, possibly by inducing hyperventilation. Further research should focus on the possible role of behavioral factors in maintaining a state of hyperreactivity of the bronchi and psycho-immunologic aspects such as

Action of 6-hydroxydopamine on two parameters of motor learning.

In rats injected in the cerebral ventricle with 250 micrograms of 6-hydroxydopamine a significant blockade of the improvement of swimming performance due to training occurs. The central injection of 6-OHDA leads to a lengthening of the total latency time (LT) of active conditioned reaction in shuttle box and of the LT of netative escape responses during learning, but not of the positive avoidance responses. 6-OHDA injected after the learing schedule (12 days) has no effect on the LT during relearning and extinction. Therefore a partial destruction of central monoaminergic, and especially of do

Effects of instruction on acquisition and extinction of electrodermal responses to fear-relevant stimuli.

In the present study we examined the hypothesis that electrodermal responses conditioned to fear-relevant stimuli are insensitive to verbal instructions. In the first experiment, different groups of subjects were conditioned to fear-relevant and fear-irrelevant control stimuli in a long interstimulus interval differential paradigm with shock as the unconditioned stimulus. Then half of the subjects were informed that no more shocks would be presented, and a number of extinction trials followed. The instruction completely abolished responding to fear-irrelevant stimuli, while leaving responses t

Post-conditioning sleep deprivation facilitates delay and trace fear memory extinction.

Trace and delay auditory fear conditioning involve different memory association strategies based on working memory involvement; however, their differences in long-term processing through sleep and extinction training remain unclear. While females often exhibit more persistent fear, complicating psychiatric treatment, most studies have primarily focused on how sleep affects initial recall in male mice. We investigated the three-way interaction between tests (trace vs. delay), sleep states, and sex during initial recall, extinction, and post-extinction remote recall. A six-hour post-conditioning

The Effect of 2.45 GHz Electromagnetic Fields on Fear Memory Extinction in Male Rats.

Introduction: Fear memories are influenced by psychological and environmental variables. We evaluated the effect of 2.45 GHz microwave radiation on rats' fear learning and memory ability to determine the potential risks. The present study aimed to assess the impacts of corticosterone (CORT) levels on the consolidation and reconsolidation of fear conditioning memories. Methods: The rats were evaluated in contextual fear conditioning using foot shocks in both short-term (7 days) exposure and long-term (30 days) exposure. Young male Wistar rats were continually exposed to radio frequency electrom

The effect of hypocapnia on extinction of conditioned fear responses.

Conditioning models have been very helpful in the understanding of the etiology and maintenance of anxiety. Such laboratory models, however, leave unexplained why in many cases of naturally occurring anxiety, as in the case of agoraphobia, the fear responses do not extinguish. Literature on experimental anxiety provocation suggests that a systemic alkalosis might play a role in the maintenance of phobic fear. It was hypothesized that a subject in a state of respiratory alkalosis would show delayed extinction to classical conditioned anxiety. In a differential classical conditioning paradigm, c

The psychology of polio as prelude to post-polio sequelae: behavior modification and psychotherapy.

Even as the physical causes and treatments for post-polio sequelae (PPS) are being identified, psychological symptoms--chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and compulsive, Type A behavior--are becoming evident in polio survivors. Importantly, these symptoms are not only causing marked distress but are preventing patients from making the lifestyle changes necessary to treat their PPS. Neither clinicians nor polio survivors have paid sufficient attention to the acute polio experience, its conditioning of life-long patterns of behavior, its relationship to the development of PPS, and its effect o

Differential reinforcement using matched examples and nonexamples expedites the practice needed to learn concepts.

Conceptual learning refers to correctly identifying novel examples and nonexamples of a concept. Concepts can be taught by presenting stimuli and differentially reinforcing responses to examples but not nonexamples. However, it is unclear which stimuli should be used and whether specifically designed stimuli can result in correct responding even in the absence of differential reinforcement. Stimulus selection can be informed by identifying features that a stimulus must have to be an example and can have without altering whether the stimulus is an example or a nonexample. Previous research sugg

Non-associative fear acquisition: a review of the evidence from retrospective and longitudinal research.

It is axiomatic that the capacity to experience fear is adaptive, enabling rapid and energetic response to imminent threat or danger. Despite the generally accepted utility of functional fear, the nature of maladaptive fear remains controversial. There is still no consensus about how specific fears and phobias are acquired and modulated. Two major schools of thought are apparent: those suggesting dysfunctional fear arises largely as the result of associative-conditioning processes versus those who favour more biologically based etiological explanations. In this regard, the non-associative mode

Further evaluation of the multiple-stimulus preference assessment.

Previously researchers have shown that multiple-stimulus preference assessments can produce results comparable to those achieved using the paired-stimulus presentation format. However, extensive experimental validation of this procedure has not yet been accomplished. The purpose of this study was to provide a systematic extension of a study reported by DeLeon and Iwata (1996). We conducted brief stimulus preference assessments with nine participants diagnosed with severe or profound mental retardation. The highest ranked stimuli were then delivered contingent on a target behavior in a multiele

Symptoms and visceral perception in patients with pain-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal pain is thought to be a hallmark of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), although currently used symptom criteria do not differentiate between abdominal pain and discomfort. By focusing on viscerosensory symptoms, we sought to determine: 1) which type of symptoms are most commonly reported by IBS patients, and 2) whether patients who report pain as their most bothersome symptom differ in clinical, psychological, and physiological characteristics. METHODS: A total of 443 consecutive new patient referrals to a tertiary referral center for functional gastrointestinal disorder
