This study evaluated water quality, nitrogen (N), and phytoplankton assemblage linkages along the western Long Island Sound (USA) shoreline (Nov. 2020-Dec. 2021) following COVID-19 stay-in-place (SIP) orders through monthly surveys and N-addition bioassays. Ammonia-N (AmN; NH3+NH4+) negatively correlated with total chlorophyll-a (chl-a) at all sites; this was significant at Alley Creek, adjacent to urban wastewater inputs, and at Calf Pasture, by the Norwalk River (Spearman rank correlation, p < 0.01 and 0.02). We compared methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (BSIs) captured by culture-based surveillance and MRSA septicemia hospitalizations captured by administrative coding using statewide hospital discharge data in Connecticut from 2010 to 2018. Observed discrepancies between identification methods suggest administrative coding is inappropriate for assessing trends in MRSA BSIs.

Immature and adult ixodid ticks were collected during 1983 and 1984 in Newtown, Connecticut, an area endemic for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), to determine prevalence of infection by spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. In October 1996, unpasteurized apple cider or juice was associated with three outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness. In the Western United States, an outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections associated with unpasteurized commercial apple juice caused illness in 66 persons and one death.
