Attention shifts and anticipatory mechanisms in hyperactive children: an ERP study using the Posner paradigm.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess attentional, decisional, and motor processing stages during the performance of an attention shifting paradigm, both in normal children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) and performance measures during a variant of the Posner paradigm in 13 control subjects and 24 ADHD children. Subjects responded with a spatially concordant motor response to left or right visual targets, which could be either preceded by a spatial cue ("valid" = same side; "invalid" = opposite

Behavioral and Neurophysiological Markers of ADHD in Children, Adolescents, and Adults: A Large-Scale Clinical Study.

This study aimed to re-evaluate the possible differences between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) subjects and healthy controls in the context of a standard Go/NoGo task (visual continuous performance test [VCPT]), frequently used to measure executive functions. In contrast to many previous studies, our sample comprises children, adolescents, and adults. We analyzed data from 447 ADHD patients and 227 healthy controls. By applying multivariate linear regression analyses, we controlled the group differences between ADHD patients and controls for age and sex. As dependent variable

Top-down and bottom-up neurodynamic evidence in patients with tinnitus.

Although a peripheral auditory (bottom-up) deficit is an essential prerequisite for the generation of tinnitus, central cognitive (top-down) impairment has also been shown to be an inherent neuropathological mechanism. Using an auditory oddball paradigm (for top-down analyses) and a passive listening paradigm (for bottom-up analyses) while recording electroencephalograms (EEGs), we investigated whether top-down or bottom-up components were more critical in the neuropathology of tinnitus, independent of peripheral hearing loss. We observed significantly reduced P300 amplitudes (reflecting funda

Frontal lobe involvement in the processing of meaningful auditory stimuli develops during childhood and adolescence.

Auditory event-related N1b reflects attention-related processing in bilateral temporal auditory cortex. Frontal contributions indicating an orienting reaction have been suggested. We analyzed the maturation of frontal contributions to the auditory event-related potential following the warning stimulus in a contingent negative variation (CNV) task by high-resolution current source density mapping and spatio-temporal source analysis in 80 healthy subjects and 121 primary headache patients (migraine with/without aura, tension type headache) from 6 to 18 years; as increased orienting responses and

Selective spatial attention to competing speakers in azimuth and depth: Evidence from real and virtual environments.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Selective auditory attention enables listeners to focus on a target speaker while suppressing concurrent sounds. To assess the ecological validity of virtual reality for studying spatial attention, the present study investigated cognitive and neural mechanisms in both real and virtual laboratory environments. METHOD: Participants completed a selective spatial attention task in both real and virtual environments under auditory-only and audio-visual conditions while EEG was recorded. Speech stimuli were presented from different locations in both azimuth and depth. In e

The external evocation and movement-related modulation of motor cortex inhibition in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome - a TMS/EEG study.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the reactivity of motor cortex inhibition to different intensities of external stimulation by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and its internal modulation during different motor states in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome. METHODS: TMS-evoked N100 served as an indirect measure of GABAB receptor function which is related to cortical inhibition. Combined TMS/EEG was used to analyze the TMS-evoked N100 component evoked by different stimulation intensities as well as during resting condition, movement preparation (contingent negative variation tas

Differential entrainment of neuroelectric delta oscillations in developmental dyslexia.

Oscillatory entrainment to the speech signal is important for language processing, but has not yet been studied in developmental disorders of language. Developmental dyslexia, a difficulty in acquiring efficient reading skills linked to difficulties with phonology (the sound structure of language), has been associated with behavioural entrainment deficits. It has been proposed that the phonological 'deficit' that characterises dyslexia across languages is related to impaired auditory entrainment to speech at lower frequencies via neuroelectric oscillations (<10 Hz, 'temporal sampling theory').

Error-related negativity and tic history in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The error-related negativity (ERN) is a negative deflection in the event-related potential after an incorrect response, which is often increased in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the relation of the ERN to comorbid tic disorders has not been examined in patients with OCD. This study compared ERN amplitudes in patients with tic-related OCD, patients with non-tic-related OCD, and healthy controls. METHOD: The ERN, correct response negativity, and error number were measured during an Eriksen flanker task to assess performance monitoring in 44 youth with a

Towards high-accuracy classifying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders using CNN-LSTM model.

Objective. The neurocognitive attention functions involve the cooperation of multiple brain regions, and the defects in the cooperation will lead to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is one of the most common neuropsychiatric disorders for children. The current ADHD diagnosis is mainly based on a subjective evaluation that is easily biased by the experience of the clinicians and lacks the support of objective indicators. The purpose of this study is to propose a method that can effectively identify children with ADHD.Approach. In this study, we proposed a CNN-LSTM model to

Different cortical source activation patterns in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder during a time reproduction task.

Several neurocognitive studies have indicated that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit cognitive deficits in perceptual timing functions; however, only a few electroencephalographic studies have investigated their time reproduction abilities. In the present research, 15 children with ADHD were studied along with 19 age-matched control subjects (aged 7-11 years) as they attempted to reproduce shorter (1000 ms) and longer (2200 ms) time intervals. Trial-mean event-related potential (ERP) and event-related spectral perturbation measures were used to compare the e

Striatal morphology correlates with frontostriatal electrophysiological motor processing in Huntington's disease: an IMAGE-HD study.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) causes progressive atrophy to the striatum, a critical node in frontostriatal circuitry. Maintenance of motor function is dependent on functional connectivity of these premotor, motor, and dorsolateral frontostriatal circuits, and structural integrity of the striatum itself. We aimed to investigate whether size and shape of the striatum as a measure of frontostriatal circuit structural integrity was correlated with functional frontostriatal electrophysiological neural premotor processing (contingent negative variation, CNV), to better understand motoric st

The Wegener's granulomatosis quantitative trait locus on chromosome 6p21.3 as characterised by tagSNP genotyping.

BACKGROUND: A genomic region on chromosome 6p21.3, including HLA-DPB1, has been linked to Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). The basis of this association is difficult to evaluate because of the complex haplotype block architecture of this region. OBJECTIVE: To identify the causative molecular genetic variation(s) using a detailed HapMap based fine-mapping approach. METHODS: 282 patients with WG and 380 healthy controls were genotyped for HLA-DPB1 as well as for 35 informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the respective region. 25 of these SNPs have been selected as tagging SNPs

Reward processing in children with affective dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Affective dysregulation (AD) in children is characterized by irritability, anger, and frequent intense temper outbursts. Considerable evidence implies altered processing of frustration about missed rewards, but few studies investigated the preceding and thus potentially predictive reward anticipation and initial delivery processing in children with AD. METHODS: A total of 103 children aged 8-12 years (50 with AD and 53 without AD) were examined during a monetary reward anticipation task with event-related potential (ERP) components resolving reward anticipation (cue-CNV [Contingen

Association of Preterm Birth With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-Like and Wider-Ranging Neurophysiological Impairments of Attention and Inhibition.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth has been associated with an increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like symptoms and cognitive impairments similar to those seen in ADHD, including attention and inhibitory control difficulties. Yet data on direct comparisons across ADHD and preterm birth on cognitive-neurophysiological measures are limited. METHOD: We directly compared 186 preterm-born adolescents to 69 term-born adolescents with ADHD and 135 term-born controls on cognitive-performance and event-related potential measures associated with attentional and inhibitory processin

Attention-related modulation of frontal midline theta oscillations in cingulate cortex during a spatial cueing Go/NoGo task.

Recently frontal midline theta (FMθ, 4-8 Hz) oscillations have been consistently reported and proposed as the potential neural mechanism for response inhibition, a core component of human executive functions. However, it remains unclear to what extent the increase of FMθ power during response inhibition tasks is influenced by other non-inhibitory cognitive processes that are usually required for the tasks. In this study, we examined attention-related effects on FMθ during response inhibition by revisiting the EEG data from healthy young adults (N = 30) while performing a spatial cueing Go/NoGo
