The French College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (CNGOF) releases its first global recommendations for clinical practice in contraception, to provide physicians with an updated synthesis of available data as a basis for their practice. The French Health Authority (HAS) methodology was used. Twelve practical issues were selected by the organizing committee and the task force members. The available literature was screened until December 2017, and allowed the release of evidence-based, graded recommendations. This synthesis is issued from 12 developed texts, previously reviewed by experts and phys

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The rapid increase in the world population makes it mandatory to develop new contraceptive methods. Disseminating reversible inexpensive and practical hormonal methods to developing countries is a target of many international agencies and funds.
RECENT FINDINGS: The safety of combined oral contraceptives is the main issue. The main guideline is to find women at risk before prescribing combined oral contraceptives. Lowering the estrogen dose should be attempted. New progestins are emerging, but their safety can be assessed only retrospectively. There is an increasing trend t

To develop a better postcoital contraceptive, the following antiestrogens were tested for their anti-implantation activity in the rat: anordrin, anordiol, tamoxifen, ICI 182,780, and RU 39411. The compounds were administered orally or subcutaneously (s.c.) to female rats on days 1, 2, and 3 of pregnancy. All the antiestrogens tested were 100% effective in preventing blastocyst implantation. The lowest effective doses when administered orally were 10, 1.25, 0.062, 6.0 (partially effective), and 0.01 mg/kg/day, respectively. The estimated median effective doses (ED50) were 5.60, 0.40, 0.035, 5.4

The spectrum of progestin therapy has changed and expanded during the last few years. 1. The drug-therapy of choice in endometriosis is the medication of progestins for at least six months, for instance ethinyl-testosterone. If a patient wants additional children the "more gentle" dydrogesterone should be considered. 2. In the treatment of dysmenorrhea combination pills should be given, sequentials should be avoided. In the case of incompatibility of estrogens or in danger of oversuppression syndrome dydrogesterone should be applicated. 3. Dysfunctional bleedings should lead to an intense sear

BACKGROUND: Emergency contraception with ethinyloestradiol-levonorgestrel is effective, and ectopic pregnancy following its failure is rare.
CASE: A 21-year-old nulligravid Japanese woman with regular menstrual periods took ethinyloestradiol-levonorgestrel pills for emergency contraception (EC) 36 and 48 hours after a coitus complicated by retention of the condom in the vagina. She started bleeding vaginally 24 days after that intercourse. As the bleeding continued for three weeks she consulted a gynaecologist. The pregnancy test was positive. Two weeks later she complained of lower abdominal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of three different low doses of mifepristone for emergency contraception, the side effects and the influence to the next menstruation.
METHODS: A randomized multicentre trial was conducted in Shanghai. 639 women with regular cycles and history of unprotected intercourse within 120 h of attendance were recruited, and they were randomly assigned to three groups. Group I (n = 214) mifepristone 50 mg was given, group II (n = 214) 25 mg and group III (n = 211) 10 mg.
RESULTS: There were eight pregnancies totally, 2 cases in group I, 1 in group II and 5 in gr

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature regarding pharmacists' roles in preventing unintended pregnancy, review the relevant laws and policies in the United States to describe pharmacists' and/or pharmacy's role in policy development related to unintended pregnancy, and identify partners who pharmacists can work with in this public health area.
DATA SOURCES: A systematic review was conducted focusing on the role of pharmacists in unintended pregnancy. For practice, articles were identified in Medline through July 1, 2009, using MeSH and keywords. For policy, two authors examined the current stat

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Community pharmacists' role in the sale and supply of emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) represents an opportunity to increase EHC availability and utilise pharmacists' expertise but little is known about pharmacists' attendant ethical concerns. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were undertaken with 23 UK pharmacists to explore their views and ethical concerns about EHC.
RESULTS: Dispensing EHC was ethically acceptable for almost all pharmacists but beliefs about selling EHC revealed three categories: pharmacists who sold EHC, respected women's autonomy an

A number of small studies have demonstrated increased use of emergency contraception (EC) when women have a supply available at home. It has been suggested that widespread use of EC could reduce abortion rates. We undertook a community intervention study designed to determine whether offering advanced supplies of EC to large numbers of women influenced abortion rates. All women aged between 16 and 29 years living in Lothian, Scotland, were offered, through health services, five courses of EC without cost to keep at home. Of a population of around 85,000 women in this age group, the study showe

AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the degree of knowledge, behavior and attitude of university students in Mersin towards emergency contraception (EC).
MATERIAL & METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out among the students of the University of Mersin in December 2008. One thousand and forty-two voluntary students participated in this study and answered the questions presented in the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information and the students' awareness, knowledge and use of EC.
RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 532 males a

Past US FDA decisions about emergency contraception (EC) have been subject to undue political influence, and last year's barring of over-the-counter access to Plan B One-Step(®) for those under the age of 17 years is no exception. The US Department of Health and Human Services cited insufficient data on EC use for females aged 11-12 years. These youngest adolescents, however, rarely need EC: data from California (USA) show that in 2009, fewer than one in 10,000 females under the age of 13 years received EC. Maintaining barriers to safe and effective EC is not medically necessary and conflicts

Emergency contraception (EC) is widely used to prevent unwanted pregnancy. This review considers the safety and efficacy of three commonly used methods -- levonorgestrel (LNG-EC), ulipristal acetate (UPA) and the copper intrauterine device. All are extremely safe, and side effects are minimal. Concerns about increased risks of ectopic pregnancy after EC use have proved unfounded, and possible teratogenic effects seem unlikely. Although the true effectiveness of EC is impossible to estimate, recent research suggests that LNG-EC prevents around 50% of expected pregnancies in women using the meth
