Longitudinal trends in uptake of hormonal long-acting reversible contraception devices throughout the COVID-19 pandemic: an Australian population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the degree to which the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated restrictions and disruptions to health services, impacted the accessibility of hormonal long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) devices within Australia. Here, we explore longitudinal patterns of dispensing of the contraceptive implant and hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) within Australia, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Population-based cohort study; analysis of 10% random sample of national Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme dispensing data, for females aged 15-49 years dispense

The search for the relationship between female hormonal status, alpha oscillations, and aperiodic features of resting state EEG.

Fluctuations in sex steroid levels during the menstrual cycle and the use of hormonal contraceptives have been linked to changes in cognitive function and emotions in females. Such variations may be mediated by overall brain activity and excitability. We aimed to investigate the impact of female hormonal status on resting state EEG (rsEEG) parameters, including periodic (individual alpha frequency, alpha power) and aperiodic (1/f slope) features. rsEEG was recorded in healthy females (mean age 26.4 ± 4.6 years), who were naturally cycling in the early follicular (n = 33) or mid-luteal phases (

Contraception in the adolescent: current concepts for the pediatrician.

An overview is presented of the major methods of contraception available to the sexually active adolescent. Emphasis is given to the combined birth control pill, while the literature describing absolute and relative contraindications to oral contraception is reviewed. It is noted that adolescents with chronic illness must also be evaluated for contraceptive needs. Other methods covered include the intrauterine device, barrier methods (diaphragm, condom, and vaginal contraceptives), injectable contraceptives, postcoital contraception, and methods under current investigation. The approach to eac

Adolescent pregnancy in the United States: a review and recommendations for clinicians and research needs.

Adolescent pregnancy, often unplanned and unwanted, has a negative impact on the physical, emotional, educational, and economic condition of the pregnant teenager. Forty percent of the one million adolescents who became pregnant in 1986 chose abortion, and, of the remainder, 61% were unmarried. Teenage mothers in greater numbers and at younger ages are opting to keep and raise their children. In 1987 over $19 billion in federal monies were expended on families begun when the mother was a teenager. The preferred approach to this problem is prevention of teenage pregnancy rather than abortion, w

Strangulated intestinal obstruction caused by ectopic intrauterine device: a case report.

An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a widely utilized contraceptive method. However, in rare instances, it may lead to severe complications such as strangulated intestinal obstruction. This paper presents a case involving an elderly female patient who developed acute abdominal pain and was subsequently diagnosed with strangulated intestinal obstruction attributed to an ectopic IUCD. The patient's initial symptomatology included upper abdominal pain and severe vomiting, which led the clinician to perform only an upper-abdominal CT scan, yielding no significant findings. Following thr

Migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device into the bladder complicated by stone formation an exceptional complication: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: We report a rare and unusual case of intravesical migration of an intrauterine device with stone formation. The intrauterine device (IUD) is the most common method of reversible contraception in women. However, its insertion is not without risk, it can cause early or late complications. IUD can perforate the uterus wall and migrate into adjacent structures. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35 year-old female 5 gravid, 4 para has been benefited from intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) 5 years ago, she was presented to gynecological consultation for chronic pelvic pain with urinary symptom

Prescription Contraception Use Among Psychiatric Inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health symptoms are known to affect contraceptive behavior. Psychiatrically hospitalized patients-those with severe symptoms-are a unique population that may have distinct patterns of contraception use; however, relevant data are currently lacking. This data paucity is notable, given the complex considerations of this population-including potential exposure to medications that are teratogens or interact with contraception. This study aimed to assess patterns of prescription contraception (PC) use and help guide contraceptive counseling in inpatient psychiatric settings. METH

Exploring young adults' contraceptive knowledge and attitudes: disparities by race/ethnicity and age.

BACKGROUND: Half of pregnancies in the United States are unintended, with the highest proportions occurring among Blacks, Hispanics, and teenagers. Understanding differences in knowledge and attitudes about contraception by race/ethnicity and age can improve efforts to reduce disparities in unintended pregnancy. METHODS: This analysis used data from the 897 female respondents in National Survey of Reproductive and Contraceptive Knowledge, a survey exploring young adults' knowledge and attitudes about contraception and pregnancy. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were use

Use of Post-Coital Strategies to Prevent Pregnancy: Findings from a National Sample of Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States.

In the context of increasing restrictions on sexual and reproductive health care, inadequate sex education, and increasing antihormonal contraceptive sentiment, we examined post-coital pregnancy prevention behavior among a nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents and young adults (AYA). We developed a novel measure of post-coital contraceptive strategies (i.e., actions taken after sexual intercourse with the intent of reducing the likelihood of pregnancy) and fielded this measure for the first time as part of a 2025 online, population-based survey of English-speaking 15-29-year-old

Trends in contraceptive patterns and behaviors during a period of fertility transition in China: 1988-2006.

BACKGROUND: This paper explores how contraceptive patterns and behaviors changed during the course of China's population transition and a period of low fertility from 1988 to 2006. STUDY DESIGN: Based on data from Chinese nationwide surveys of family planning and reproductive health undertaken in 1988, 1997, 2001 and 2006, this study uses a multinomial logit model to analyze changes in, regional differences in and determinants of contraceptive behaviors during this period. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of contraceptive use among married women aged 15-49 years changed little during these 20

The effect of long-acting reversible contraception on rapid repeat pregnancy in adolescents: a review.

Repeat pregnancy within 2 years of a previous birth or abortion occurs in approximately 35% of recently pregnant female adolescents. The majority of these pregnancies are classified as unintended with about half ending in births and the remainder in abortions. Rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and continues a cycle of economic deprivation for young women and their families. Immediately following a pregnancy, most young women report an intention to avoid pregnancy in the near future, but many change their minds or become ambivalent within

The oral pill in the Indonesian Population/Family Planning Program.

The oral pill is the most extensively used contraceptive in Indonesia. Of new users, 64% use the pill, 20% IUDs, 8% injectables, 6% condoms and 2% voluntary sterilization. Since the continuation rate of pill use is low as compared to the other non-permanent methods, i.e. the IUD and the injectables, special steps must be taken in order to reach the goal of the program, i.e. the reduction of the crude birth rate (CBR) to 22/1000 by the year 1990. These special steps involve selecting the best pill for Indonesian women, and determining the best contraceptive combination for each region and for n

Trends in contraceptive use among female adolescents in Nigeria: Evidence from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey.

Available evidence indicates that only 2.1 percent and 1.2 percent of married (or in union) adolescents in Nigeria are using any method and modern method of contraceptives respectively. This has contributed to the estimated 1.2 million induced abortions done annually of which 60 percent were unsafe. The study examined data from the 2013 and 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey for trend on the knowledge and use of contraceptives by all women, currently married and sexually active unmarried women aged 15-19 years in between surveys. There was an increase of 144% (p <0.05) in Family Planni

Progestin and breast cancer risk: a systematic review.

This systematic review summarizes research on the use of progestin and breast cancer risk. Although mainly used for contraception, progestin can help treat menstrual disorders, and benign breast, uterine, and ovarian diseases. Breast cancer is the leading site of new, non-skin, cancers in females in the United States, and possible factors that may modulate breast cancer risk need to be identified. ProQuest (Ann Arbor, MI) and PubMed-Medline (US National Library of Medicine, Bethesda MD, USA) databases were used to search for epidemiologic studies from 2000 to 2015 that examined the association
