Oxytocin-enhanced group therapy for methamphetamine use disorder: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) use is a public health crisis that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM). There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological interventions to treat methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). MUD is associated with social impairments and extremely high treatment attrition rates. Administration of oxytocin, a neuropeptide involved in social attachment, may be a novel approach to addressing these issues. Moreover, oxytocin administration has shown promise for reducing METH-related addictive behavior in animal models, but has not yet been investiga

Birth Control Connect: A randomized trial of an online group to disseminate contraceptive information.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to test whether participation in an online group including IUD users influenced IUD-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among IUD non-users, as a proof-of-concept evaluation of information dissemination for less commonly used or novel contraceptives. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a blinded, randomized controlled trial on the effect of online communication with IUD users within an online program called Birth Control Connect. Participants were women age 18-45 living in the United States who had never used an IUD. We invited participants randomized to the intervention to

Controlling the Reactivity of the Boronyl Group in Platinum Complexes toward Cyclodimerization: A Theoretical Survey.

A theoretical study of the cyclodimerization of (Cy3P)2Pt(BO)Br (1Br) and [(Cy3P)2Pt(BO)](+) (1) (Cy = cyclohexyl) suggests that the reactivity of the BO ligand is primarily controlled by M←BO σ donation. Therefore, increasing the electron density at the metal center through strong σ-donor and weak π-acceptor ancillary ligands and a low formal metal oxidation state are suggested to reduce the polarity of the boronyl ligand and thus lower its reactivity toward cyclodimerization. The stable 1Br has lower Pt←BO σ donation and thus a less electrophilic boron atom, leading to a less polarized BO li

Comparison of serum and urine lead levels in opium addicts with healthy control group.

CONTEXT: Lead-contaminated opium is one of the new sources of lead exposure in our region. As far as the literature review is concerned, there are limited comparative studies about comparison of blood lead level (BLL) in addict patients with healthy controls. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare BLL and urine lead level (ULL) between opium addicts with the healthy control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty opium addict subjects (mean age: 43 ± 10 years) as the patient group and 40 healthy subjects (mean age: 41 ± 9 years) as the control group participated. Three milliliter of whole blood and urin

Cognitive profile of patients with rotated drawing at copy or recall: a controlled group study.

When copying or recalling a figure from memory, some patient with dementia or focal brain lesions may rotate the drawing through ±90° or 180°. We have tried to clarify the nature of this phenomenon by investigating the cognitive profile of 22 patients who rotated the copy of the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure and 27 who rotated (only) the recall, and two control groups of cases with the same neuropsychiatric diagnoses, but no misorientation deficit. Brain MRI and FDG-PET images were also analysed. Predictor of rotation at the copy versus rotation at the recall was visuospatial impairment as mea…

A randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of a rumination-focused group treatment for residual depression.

The maintenance of residual symptoms following acute treatment is common and is associated with poor long-term prognosis. This study investigates whether a cognitive-behavioral group treatment is effective in reducing residual depression by targeting depressive rumination. Participants (N=60) were randomly assigned to either the group treatment or a wait-list control condition. Treatment significantly improved depressed mood, rumination, perceived control over rumination and dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs compared with the wait condition. Treatment gains were maintained over the follow-up

Pathological gamblers and a non-psychiatric control group taking gender differences into account.

The current study aimed to identify personality traits, emotional states and adjustment variables in a sample of pathological gamblers as compared to a non-gambling control group taking gender differences into account. The sample for this study consisted of 206 subjects (103 pathological gamblers and 103 non-psychiatric subjects from the general population matched for age and gender). Pathological gamblers had a lower educational level and a family history of alcohol abuse higher than non-gamblers. In turn, female gamblers were affected by unemployment and a lower socioeconomic status more oft

Curvature analysis of femoral shaft in total knee arthroplasty patient and control group.

For some patients with joint illnesses such as rheumarthritis or varus deformity, the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are performed. However, when inserting metal cutting guide for the procedures, due to the femoral shaft bowing, complications such as the cortex of the femoral shaft damages or secondary fractures can be caused. If the central coordinate value of the femoral shaft is known, the metal cutting guide could be inserted into the anatomical center, so such complications can be prevented. In this study, CT images of femoral shafts of 10 individuals in the experiment group who

A comparative study of celiac disease in children with migraine headache and a normal control group.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Migraine headache is one of the most frequent types of headache in children in which multiple factors, including environmental and genetic, are involved. Celiac disease is an autoimmune-mediated disease with intolerance to gluten. The clinical spectrum of celiac disease is wide. Patients may present with malabsorption symptoms or extra-intestinal involvement, or can be totally asymptomatic. The association of migraine headache and celiac disease is not well known. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of celiac disease in children with migraine headache, in order

The effectiveness of group therapy for students with mild voice disorders: a controlled clinical trial.

Previous studies of students studying to be teachers have indicated that these students commonly have voice disorders. Ideally, voice disorders should be treated before students start their work as teachers, but the resources for this treatment are often limited. This study examines whether group voice therapy is effective for teacher students. Accordingly, 20 teacher students with mild voice disorders received group voice therapy (in three small groups), whereas 20 students with similar voice disorders served as a control group and consequently did not receive voice therapy. Two out of three

What are the effects of group cognitive behaviour therapy for voices? A randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence exists for the effects of psychological treatment on voices even though it is clear that CBT does affect delusions and symptoms overall. This study tested whether a group based on cognitive behavioural principles could produce beneficial effects on hallucinations. AIM: To test the effectiveness of group CBT on social functioning and severity of hallucinations. METHOD: Participants were included if they had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and experienced distressing auditory hallucinations (rated on the PANSS). They were randomly allocated to group CBT (N = 45) or a c

Vitamin E supplements in asthma: a parallel group randomised placebo controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Increased dietary vitamin E intake is associated with a reduced incidence of asthma, and combinations of antioxidant supplements including vitamin E are effective in reducing ozone induced bronchoconstriction. A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of supplementation with vitamin E for 6 weeks on bronchial hyperresponsiveness in atopic adults with asthma. METHODS: 72 participants from a clinical trial register of adults with asthma were randomised to receive 500 mg natural vitamin E or matched placebo for 6 weeks in a placebo controlled, double blind parallel group clini

External quality control of direct antigen tests to detect group A streptococcal antigen.

Presented here are the results of an external quality control survey organized by the Swiss Center for Quality Control (CSCQ) to evaluate the performance of direct antigen tests (DATs) widely used in Swiss medical practices and laboratories for the diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis. Twice yearly over a 4-year period, just over 100 participants were requested to analyze positive, weakly positive and negative samples provided to them by the CSCQ with their routinely used DATs and to send the results to the CSCQ. For 1,620 samples distributed, the CSCQ received 1,484 (91.6%) results
