Promoting mental health and preventing substance abuse and violence in elementary students: a randomized control study of the Michigan Model for Health.

BACKGROUND: In elementary grades, comprehensive health education curricula mostly have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing singular health issues. The Michigan Model for Health (MMH) was implemented and evaluated to determine its impact on multiple health issues, including social and emotional skills, prosocial behavior, and drug use and aggression. METHODS: Schools (N = 52) were randomly assigned to intervention and control conditions. Participants received 24 lessons in grade 4 (over 12 weeks) and 28 more lessons in grade 5 (over 14 weeks), including material focusing on social and emo

Caffeine intake, toxicity and dependence and lifetime risk for psychiatric and substance use disorders: an epidemiologic and co-twin control analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although caffeine is the most commonly used psychoactive substance and often produces symptoms of toxicity and dependence, little is known, especially in community samples, about the association between caffeine use, toxicity and dependence and risk for common psychiatric and substance use disorders. METHOD: Assessments of lifetime maximal caffeine use and symptoms of caffeine toxicity and dependence were available on over 3600 adult twins ascertained from the population-based Virginia Twin Registry. Lifetime histories of major depression (MD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) a

[Occupational exposure to hazardous substances and risk of cancer in the area of the mouth cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. A case-control study].

A case-control study of squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract conducted in Heidelberg and Giessen (FRG) provided information on occupational factors in 200 patients and 800 controls (adjusted to sex, age and area of living; 4:1 matched design). The number of subjects exposed to wood dusts, organic chemicals, coal products or to cement was significantly elevated in the tumour group. An increased risk for head and neck cancer was observed after exposition to wood dust (RR = 2,2), organic compounds (RR = 2,4), coal products (RR = 2,7) and especially to cement (RR = 4,4). The ca

Does a digoxin-like substance participate in vascular and pressure control during dietary sodium changes in patients with primary aldosteronism?

To evaluate the importance of an endogenous sodium pump inhibitor in the pathogenesis of low renin human hypertension, the urinary excretion of a digoxin-like immunoreactive substance (DLIS) was measured in eight patients with primary aldosteronism (n = 5, with adenomas) during two sequential 1-week periods of low- (20 mmol/l NaCl) and high- (200 mmol/l NaCl) sodium intake. DLIS excretion increased consistently during high-sodium intake while urinary aldosterone, plasma renin activity, cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone did not change. Although blood pressure showed a time-course paralle

The Presence of Nitrosamines and Nitrosamine Drug-Related Substances in Pharmaceutical Products: An Overview of Regulatory Concerns, Analytical Methodologies, and Control Strategies.

The presence of N-nitrosamine impurities in pharmaceutical products is well known. In 2019, it resulted in drug recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Soon, several groups identified the presence of many N-nitrosamines (NAs) in various Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and drug formulations worldwide. Moreover, in the last two years, another type of NAs was identified and detected in several pharmaceutical products. These are easily formed from the parent drug molecule and are known as Nitrosamine drug-related substances (NDSRIs). The amine group plays a major and unique role

Risk of eating disorders among university students and its association with dieting, weight control behavior and non-substance addictions.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) most often develop during adolescence and young adulthood. Therefore, university is deemed a period of risk due to increased academic demands and uncertainty about the future. Despite the high prevalence of ED among young adults, there is limited evidence regarding their association with non-substance behavioral addictions-such as mobile phone use and exercise addiction-in Mediterranean university populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of risk for ED and its association with risk factors among university undergraduate students. The associati

Efficacy of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation in populations with psychiatric and/or substance use problems: A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: People with psychiatric and substance use disorders are more likely to smoke and less likely to quit than smokers in the general population. We evaluated the efficacy of e-cigarettes for abstinence from tobacco smoking in people with psychiatric and substance use problems. METHODS: We analyzed data collected in the larger 'Efficacy, Safety, and Toxicology of ENDS as an Aid for Smoking Cessation' (ESTxENDS) trial (n=1246): the intervention group received e-cigarettes and e-liquids, plus standard-of-care smoking cessation counseling (SOC) for 6 months; the control group received S

Reducing substance involvement in college students: a three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial of a computer-based intervention.

The prevalence of alcohol and other drug use is high among college students. Reducing their consumption will likely be beneficial for society as a whole. Computer and web-based interventions are promising for providing behaviorally based information. The present study compared the efficacy of three interventions (computerized screening and motivational intervention [ASSIST/MBIc], non-computerized screening and motivational intervention [ASSIST/MBIi], and screening only [control]) in college students in Curitiba, Brazil. A convenience sample of 458 students scored moderate and high risk on the

Adapted personalized cognitive counseling for episodic substance-using men who have sex with men: a randomized controlled trial.

Episodic drug use and binge drinking are associated with HIV risk among substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM), yet no evidence-based interventions exist for these men. We adapted personalized cognitive counseling (PCC) to address self-justifications for high-risk sex among HIV-negative, episodic SUMSM, then randomized men to PCC (n = 162) with HIV testing or control (n = 164) with HIV testing alone. No significant between-group differences were found in the three primary study outcomes: number of unprotected anal intercourse events (UAI), number of UAI partners, and UAI with three

Systematic review of ERP and fMRI studies investigating inhibitory control and error processing in people with substance dependence and behavioural addictions.

BACKGROUND: Several current theories emphasize the role of cognitive control in addiction. The present review evaluates neural deficits in the domains of inhibitory control and error processing in individuals with substance dependence and in those showing excessive addiction-like behaviours. The combined evaluation of event-related potential (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) findings in the present review offers unique information on neural deficits in addicted individuals. METHODS: We selected 19 ERP and 22 fMRI studies using stop-signal, go/no-go or Flanker paradigms ba

Lifetime exposure to smoking and substance abuse may be associated with late-onset multiple sclerosis: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset multiple sclerosis (LOMS), defined as the development of MS after the age of 50, has shown a substantial surge in incidence rates and is associated with more rapid progression of disability. Besides, studies have linked tobacco smoking to a higher chance of MS progression. However, the role of smoking on the risk of developing LOMS remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the possible association between lifetime exposure to cigarette and waterpipe smoking, drug abuse, and alcohol consumption and the risk of LOMS. METHODS: This population-based case-control study in
