BACKGROUND: A semiquantitative scheme for analysis of corneal neovascularization using projected corneal photographs is demonstrated and tested in a pilot study to analyze occurrence of corneal neovascularization in patients after perforating keratoplasty which subsequently developed transplant rejection.
METHODS: Corneal photographs on the slit lamp with diffuse frontal illumination were obtained in a standardized technique. Slides were projected with 100 x magnification and analyzed twice with a 2 months interval. Corneal vessels were graded by two independent observers in each of 12 cornea

PURPOSE: To describe the outcomes of a novel technique for the repair of peripheral corneal perforations using autologous limbal tissue.
METHODS: Two patients with peripheral corneal perforations with contraindications to other corneal procedures underwent limbal advancements. This technique involves creating a pedicle of the limbus, sclera and conjunctiva to cover the perforation.
RESULTS: The tissue had optimal integration in both patients; no aqueous leaks or flat anterior chambers were noted. None of the patients had recurrence of perforation or ocular discomfort.
CONCLUSION: In conclus…

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and surgical success rates of amniotic membrane (AM) transplantation performed for corneal perforation closure using a novel technique.
METHODS: This study included 6 eyes from 6 patients with corneal perforation who had received AM transplantation between May 2011 and April 2012. The AM was collected from human placenta shortly after cesarean section. In surgery, the AM was folded into pleats and used to plug the wound using 10-0 nylon suture. The wound was then covered with an AM seal. After reepithelialization and AM scarring, sutu…

PURPOSE: Corneal ulcer is a very rare clinical manifestation in hereditary familial amyloidosis of the Portuguese type, from which only one case has been reported previously. The case of a 35-year-old man illustrates the diagnostic findings and the difficulties encountered in understanding the physiopathology of such a complication.
PATIENT: The patient was referred by his general practician because of bilateral visual impairment since few days. Examination disclosed bilateral central perforating corneal ulceration. Corneal sensitivity was normal in both eyes, BUT (break-up time) was 2 sec. a

Managing large corneal perforations in severe dry eye disease (DED) is often challenging. We describe such a case that was successfully managed with a temporary tectonic posterior corneal lamellar graft. A patient with Sjogren's syndrome presented with filamentary keratitis and was inappropriately prescribed G. Maxitrol (Novartis, USA) along with lubricants. She returned in 6 days with bilateral corneal melts, which was worse in her left eye. The left eye had a large corneal perforation and a flat anterior chamber. She underwent an emergency temporary tectonic posterior lamellar graft to form …

BACKGROUND The use of amniotic membranes for corneal perforations using different surgical techniques has been widely described in the literature. This case report is a novel variation in the technique that can be useful for incorporating in clinical practice when the need arises. CASE REPORT A 36-year-old male patient presented to our clinic with a corneal ulcer in his left eye caused by herpetic keratitis, treated with a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (indomethacin 0.1% solution). Examination revealed a paracentral 2-mm wide corneal perforation on the site of the corneal ulcer. The …

PURPOSE: To report a case series of lacrimal duct obstruction and infection associated with non-traumatic corneal perforation.
CASE SERIES: This study included 6 eyes in 6 patients with non-traumatic corneal perforation treated between April 2019 and March 2021. All 6 cases were associated with lacrimal duct obstruction and infection. Purulent discharge caused by lacrimal duct infection was observed in all 6 patients (100%). However, three of the 6 patients (50%) did not show purulent discharge at initial examination and lacrimal duct obstruction was therefore not initially recognized. Dry ey…

Background: Corneal infection of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is uncommon and usually limited to the anterior stroma. However, we observed a case of corneal stromal perforation caused by this fungus under a compromised condition. Case: A 73-year-old woman consulted us with a severe corneal ulceration. She was a tangerine orange farmer who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for more than ten years. Before consultation with us, she received pterygium excision in her right eye. She then developed a corneal ulceration and received topical glucocorticoid therapy upon diagnosis of rheumatoid arthr

PURPOSE: Corneal perforations pose a considerable challenge for ophthalmic surgeons. The aim remains restoring the anatomical integrity of eye while attempting to preserve as much visual function as possible. To our knowledge, we report the first case series of 4 successful tectonic Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) grafts completed for acute corneal perforation. In all cases, restoration of globe integrity was achieved. In cases where visual potential remained, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty over DSEK was offered.
METHODS: Four patients presenting to Royal Gwent Hospita…

Corneal burn grade IV usually leads to blindness. Several different surgical techniques remain challenging owing to the extensive tissue damage. Here, we introduce a novel technique with a 15 mm corneoscleral and limbal homologous graft combined with sequential autologous corneal removal ab interno, with a vitrectomy probe to save the anterior chamber angle. In vivo anatomy with optical coherence tomography is the surgical key. A large 15 mm sclerocorneal graft is sutured on top of the remainder of the destroyed cornea and sclera after removal of the epithelium and conjunctiva, with anterior s
