Tryptophan and/or canthaxanthin in quail diets: effects on performance, carcass traits, hematology, blood chemistry and hepatic antioxidant capacity.

To enhance the health and performance of poultry, novel approaches have to be created. Using appropriate nutritional interventions to enhance body physiology and thus enhance productivity is one of these approaches. The purpose of the present investigation intended to examine how growing quail physiology and growth is affected by supplementing diets with tryptophan (Trp) and/or canthaxanthin (CX). The sum of 200 unsexed, 1-week-age Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica), with a nearly similar body weight (BW) of 33.50 ± 1.20 g, were assigned, in random, to four experimental groups. Each

Marek's disease in Japanese quail -- a pathological, virological and serological study.

Experimental studies were performed to see whether Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) are susceptible to JM strain of Marek's disease virus (MDV). In three identical trials, a total of 120, one-day-old quail were inoculated intra-abdominally with 0.2 ml. of chicken blood infected with MDV (JM strain) and raised in FAPP isolators. Uninfected controls were inoculated with normal saline only and raised separately. During the 18-week post infection observation period, 65-80% of the infected quail died within six weeks, while the highest mortality in control groups was only 0-5%. In each t

Amylin-like immunoreactivity in the extra-islet peptide YY-producing and glucagon-immunoreactive cells in Japanese quail pancreas.

In this study, we investigated amylin-like substance distribution in the pancreas of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) using a specific anti-rat amylin serum. We detected amylin-immunoreactive cells dispersed in the pancreatic extra-islet region but not in the islet region. The synthetic rat amylin-containing serum pre-absorption abolished the staining profile. Almost all amylin-immunoreactive cells were immuno-positive for peptide YY (PYY). In addition, certain amylin-immunoreactive cells stained immuno-positive for glucagon. Amylin and PYY co-secreted from the extra-islet cells might partic

The detoxification of cadmium in Japanese quail by pomegranate peel powder.

Environmental pollution and exposure to toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) can cause severe and chronic diseases and have significant side effects on vital organs. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of pomegranate peel on biochemical factors and lipid peroxidation in intoxication by Cd in Japanese quail. Two hundred seventy quails in different groups were fed diets containing Cd and pomegranate peel from 6 to 35 days old. Then, serum biochemical parameters were assessed, including liver enzymes, urea, and thiobarbituric acid. In the quails, Cd significantly increased MDA, urea, and

An unusual mechanism of disposal of superfluous spermatozoa in vasectomised quails.

As part of a series of studies designed to evaluate usual and potential functions of epithelial cells in the avian epididymis under varying circumstances, adult, sexually active male Japanese quails were vasectomised for 3, 6 and 8 weeks. The testes, epididymides and deferent ducts were studied histologically and ultrastructurally. Testicular lesions were minimal, but epididymal response was profound. Non-ciliated (type I) cells of the proximal efferent duct (PED) actively phagocytized spermatozoa and their fragments. An especially noteworthy and apparently novel observation was the proliferat

Avian high-dose toxicity of cyanobacterial biomass.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies using oral administration of environmentally relevant doses of cyanobacterial biomass containing microcystins (MCs) induced only sub-lethal effects in experimental birds. Therefore, the objective of this study was to obtain data on avian high-dose toxicity of MCs and compute LD50, if possible, following the natural oral route of administration. DESIGN: Responses of birds to single high-dose exposure to MCs were evaluated in fourteen-day old Japanese quail males (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with average body weight of 50 g which were randomly divided into five grou

Mechanisms underlying reproductive responses of Japanese quails to heat stress conditions.

Exposure to heat stress can cause a significant increase in the death rate and disease susceptibility of poultry birds, ultimately impacting the profitability of the poultry industry. Despite being a more economical choice, Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) are not immune to the harmful effects of heat stress. Quails may experience negative effects on their reproductive performance due to excessive reactive molecules caused by heat stress. However, they have developed various mechanisms to maintain their reproductive abilities in such conditions. The neuroendocrine system in birds plays a vi

Emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum)-based intervention in Japanese quail's diet and its impact on performance, carcass yield, meat fatty acids, and fecal volatile fatty acids.

The high nutritional and nutraceutical qualities of emmer wheat make it a valuable cereal grain. The present study was designed to quantify the contribution of emmer wheat inclusion into Japanese quail's rations in terms of their productive responses, alterations in the fatty acid profile of their meat, and changes in the composition of volatile fatty acids in their feces. For this purpose, a total of 160, 1-day-old Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments (4 replicates and 10 quails/replicate) with different levels of emmer wheat including

Quails are resistant to infection with Neospora caninum tachyzoites.

The aim of this study was to characterize the role of quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) as intermediate hosts for Neospora caninum. Fifty-eight 20-day old quails were individually identified with numbered rings and kept in cages adequate for the species. The birds were fed commercial feed and distilled water ad libitum. They were weighed daily during the first month and every seven days from then on. The birds were randomly distributed into 3 groups; 40 quails (group A) and 8 quails (group B) received 3.5×10(6) and 5×10(6) N. caninum tachyzoites, respectively, and 10 quails (group C) receive

A near-complete quail genome identifies heterochromatin expansion and chromosome architecture remodeling.

Avian genomes are typically compact, with limited repetitive content, but the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) represents an exception. Here, we report a near-complete chromosome-level quail genome assembly (1.33 Gb), up to 43% larger than previous quail assemblies. The assembly reveals extensive repeat accumulation and heterochromatin expansion, particularly in the pericentromeric regions of micro- and dot chromosomes, and identifies a conserved centromeric repeat shared across chromosomes. Comparative analyses show that transposable element accumulation reshaped chromatin architecture, his

Meta-Analysis of Genetic Parameters for Growth and Carcass Traits in Japanese Quail.

BACKGROUND: The considerable variability observed in genetic parameters for growth and carcass traits in Japanese quails necessitates a meta-analysis for their accurate estimation. Such a precise estimation is crucial for the successful optimisation of breeding programs. OBJECTIVES: This pioneering comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to derive precise genetic parameters for growth and carcass traits in Japanese quail. METHODS: For this meta-analysis, data were systematically extracted from 50 eligible studies published between 1974-2024. Genetic parameters including, heri

Ghrelin, not corticosterone, is associated with transitioning of phenotypic states in a migratory Galliform.

In both captive and free-living birds, the emergence of the migratory phenotype is signalled by rapid and marked increases in food intake and fuelling, as well as changes in amount of nocturnality or migratory restlessness. The metabolic hormone corticosterone and, as more recently suggested, the gut-derived hormone ghrelin have been suggested to play a role in mediating such phenomenal phenotypic flexibility given that they both regulate fuel metabolism and locomotion across vertebrate taxa. Here, using the Common quail (Coturnix coturnix) as our study species, we induced autumn migration fol

Entopallium Lost GFAP Immunoreactivity during Avian Evolution: Is GFAP a "Condition Sine Qua Non"?

INTRODUCTION: The present study demonstrates that in the same brain area the astroglia can express GFAP (the main cytoskeletal protein of astroglia) in some species but not in the others of the same vertebrate class. It contrasts the former opinions that the distribution of GFAP found in a species is characteristic of the entire class. The present study investigated birds in different phylogenetic positions: duck (Cairina moschata domestica), chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), and quails (Coturnix japonica and Excalfactoria chinensis) of Galloanserae; pigeon (Columba livia domestica) of a gro

Hereditary multiple malformation in Japanese quail: a possible powerful animal model for morphogenetic studies.

Hereditary multiple malformation (HMM), a new mutation of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), is controlled by an autosomal recessive gene. The proposed gene symbol for the mutant gene is hmm. The majority of the homozygotes die at the sixth day of incubation, and the remainder die at various stages by 15 days of incubation. The homozygotes surviving to the late embryonic stage have greatly shortened lower and upper beaks that are set apart and show an early embryo-like body shape, with feather buds but no plumules. Furthermore, they show syndactylous polydactyly in both fore and hind limbs. I
