Schistosoma haematobium infection and environmental factors in Southwestern Tanzania: A cross-sectional, population-based study.

Schistosomiasis is a leading cause of morbidity in Africa. Understanding the disease ecology and environmental factors that influence its distribution is important to guide control efforts. Geographic information systems have increasingly been used in the field of schistosomiasis environmental epidemiology. This study reports prevalences of Schistosoma haematobium infection and uses remotely sensed and questionnaire data from over 17000 participants to identify environmental and socio-demographic factors that are associated with this parasitic infection. Data regarding socio-demographic status

Profile of children with COVID-19 infection: a cross sectional study from North-East Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: available evidence suggests that children infected with COVID-19 tend to have a less severe form of the disease. However, most of the studies that have established this largely emanate from outside sub-Saharan Africa. The pandemic nature of the infection makes it instructive to evaluate its pattern among children across different climes, including ours. This study was set out to describe the clinical characteristics of children with COVID-19 in Bauchi State, North-East Nigeria. METHODS: this was a cross sectional study that involved 53 children between the ages of 0 and 18 years

Combined cross-sectional and case-control study on Echinococcus multilocularis infection in pigs in Switzerland.

The canid tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans and other intermediate hosts. Depending on the permissiveness of the intermediate host, the larval form of E. multilocularis (metacestode) may be either fertile, e.g. in rodents, and thus supporting the life cycle of the parasite, or infertile, e.g. in pigs, and thus interrupting the life cycle. Pigs have been shown to act as aberrant hosts for the metacestode and consequently develop liver lesions but represent a dead-end for the parasite. Routine liver inspection at slaughter provided the basis for a

Polyethylene tube as an attachment to universal serial bus (USB) dermatoscope for preventing cross-infection.

Type 2 immunity has evolved to protect against worms but becomes harmful when activated during allergic inflammation. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) drive type 2 responses by rapidly secreting IL-5 and IL-13. The alarmins, IL-25, IL-33, and TSLP activate ILC2s and are linked to allergic diseases. However, how alarmins connect to the transcriptional networks driving type 2 effector functions remains elusive. Here, we performed RNA sequencing of ILC2s deficient in IL-25, IL-33, or TSLP pathway and identified the transcription factor Blimp-1 as an IL-33-regulated gene in ILC2s. While Blimp

Knowledge of human monkeypox viral infection among general practitioners: a cross-sectional study in Indonesia.

After the first, imported, laboratory-confirmed case of monkeypox in human was reported in Singapore on May 2019, countries in Asia started to strengthen disease surveillance systems. One challenge in preventing monkeypox is a lack of knowledge, particularly among healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of monkeypox among general practitioners (GPs) in Indonesia. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. The survey collected participants' knowledge on a 21-item scale and explanatory variables. A two-step logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the

Catechol cross-linked antimicrobial peptide hydrogels prevent multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infection in burn wounds.

Hospital-acquired infections are common in burn patients and are the major contributors of morbidity and mortality. Bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) are difficult to treat due to their biofilm formation and rapidly acquiring resistance to antibiotics. This work presents a newly developed hydrogel that has the potential for treating bacterial wound infections. The hydrogel formulation is based on an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), epsilon-poly-l-lysine (EPL) and catechol, which was cross-linked via mussel-inspired chemistry b

Congenital cytomegalovirus, parvovirus and enterovirus infection in Mozambican newborns at birth: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the most prevalent congenital infection acquired worldwide, with higher incidence in developing countries and among HIV-exposed children. Less is known regarding vertical transmission of parvovirus B19 (B19V) and enterovirus (EV). We aimed to assess the prevalence of CMV, B19V and EV vertical transmission and compare results of screening of congenital CMV obtained from two different specimens in a semirural Mozambican maternity. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted among pregnant mothers attending Manhiça District Hospital u

Kinetics, Longevity, and Cross-Reactivity of Antineuraminidase Antibody after Natural Infection with Influenza A Viruses.

The kinetics, longevity, and breadth of antibodies to influenza virus neuraminidase (NA) in archival, sequential serum/plasma samples from influenza A virus (IAV) H5N1 infection survivors and from patients infected with the 2009 pandemic IAV (H1N1) virus were determined using an enzyme-linked lectin-based assay. The reverse-genetics-derived H4N1 viruses harboring a hemagglutinin (HA) segment from A/duck/Shan Tou/461/2000 (H4N9) and an NA segment derived from either IAV H5N1 clade 1, IAV H5N1 clade 2.3.4, the 2009 pandemic IAV (H1N1) (H1N1pdm), or A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (H1N1) virus were used as

Cross reactive molecules of human lymphatic filaria Brugia malayi inhibit Leishmania donovani infection in hamsters.

Coinfections are common in natural populations and the outcome of their interactions depends on the immune responses of the host elicited by the parasites. Earlier we showed that immunization with BmAFII (Sephadex G-200 eluted) fraction of human lymphatic filaria Brugia malayi inhibited progression of Leishmania donovani infection in golden hamsters. In the present study we identified cross reactive molecules of B. malayi, and investigated their effect on L. donovani infection and associated immune responses in the host. The sequence alignment and sharing of linear T- and B-cell epitopes in pr

Leishmania donovani Nucleoside Hydrolase Terminal Domains in Cross-Protective Immunotherapy Against Leishmania amazonensis Murine Infection.

Nucleoside hydrolases of the Leishmania genus are vital enzymes for the replication of the DNA and conserved phylogenetic markers of the parasites. Leishmania donovani nucleoside hydrolase (NH36) induced a main CD4(+) T cell driven protective response against L. chagasi infection in mice which is directed against its C-terminal domain. In this study, we used the three recombinant domains of NH36: N-terminal domain (F1, amino acids 1-103), central domain (F2 aminoacids 104-198), and C-terminal domain (F3 amino acids 199-314) in combination with saponin and assayed their immunotherapeutic effect

Cross-reactive immunity against influenza viruses in children and adults following 2009 pandemic H1N1 infection.

UNLABELLED: 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza (A(H1N1)pdm09) virus infected large numbers of people worldwide. Recent studies suggest infection with A(H1N1)pdm09 virus elicited cross-reactive anti-hemagglutinin (HA) memory B cell response to conserved regions of HA. However, the breadth and magnitude of cross-reactive immunity in children and adults following A(H1N1)pdm09 infection are unknown. METHODS: We investigated serum anti-HA immunity to a number of group-1 and -2 viruses in children and adults using hemagglutination inhibition (HAI), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and virus neutralizati

Cross-talk between the inflammatory response, sympathetic activation and pulmonary infection in the ischemic stroke.

The immune system response and inflammation play a key role in brain injury during and after a stroke. The acute immune response is responsible for secondary brain tissue damage immediately after the stroke, followed by immunosuppression due to sympathetic nervous system activation. The latter increases risk of infection complications, such as pneumonia. The pneumonia-related inflammatory state can release a bystander autoimmune response against central nervous system antigens, thereby initiating a vicious circle. The aim of this review is to summarize the relationship between ischemic stroke,

Infection-induced anaemia: a cross-sectional study of 14,636 German travellers aged 20-49 years.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a frequently diagnosed condition which can develop as a consequence of numerous factors, including infectious diseases (IDs). Travelling, especially in sub-/tropical regions, leads to an elevated risk of contracting IDs. The aim of our study was to assess the epidemiological significance of IDs in inducing anaemia among a large cohort of returned travellers. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which data on 17,009 returned travellers aged 20-49 years who consulted the travel medicine clinic of the University of Munich between 1999 and 2011 were retrieved and an

Risks for STIs/HIV infection among Madawalabu university students, Southeast Ethiopia: a cross sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In developing nations, the spread of STIs/HIV infection continues to affect millions of young and productive population. In Ethiopia youths including university/college students are at greater risk of STIs including HIV infection often due to many risky sexual behaviors. Although there are some anecdotal evidences suggesting widespread unsafe sexual practices among university students, the paucity of research finding, especially in newly established public universities are the major bottle necks to commence feasible interventions. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the

Cross-protection among Rickettsia species and subspecies in a guinea pig model of cutaneous infection.

Pathogenic rickettsiae of the spotted fever group (SFG) induce skin lesions called "eschars" at the sites of arthropod bites. We recently described a guinea pig model based on eschar formation to predict the eventual pathogenicity of new Rickettsia species, and in this study, we used the model to study cross-protection among SFG Rickettsia species and subspecies. We showed that the intradermal inoculation of guinea pigs with Rickettsia conorii subsp. conorii significantly reduced, but not completely prevented, the number of eschars after sub-challenges with the same pathogen (P=0.0004). The sa
