BACKGROUND: Some reported that organizing pneumonia (OP) may occur after influenza A infections including swine-origin influenza A (H1N1). However, OP associated with influenza B infection has never been reported. We report the first case of secondary OP associated with viral pneumonia caused by influenza B.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year old woman was diagnosed as viral pneumonia caused by type B influenza. Despite of antiviral therapy, abnormal chest shadows were not improved. Bronchoscopy and transbronchial lung biopsy showed organizing pneumonia due to viral pneumonia caused by influenza B.

Drug can cause various types of lung damages, with drug-induced pneumonitis (including acute interstitial pneumonia, usual interstitial pneumonia, desquamative interstitial pneumonia, nonspecific interstitial pneumonia, bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia, eosinophilic pneumonia and hypersensitivity pneumonitis) being the most important among them. The incidence and the causative agents of drug induced pneumonitis have varied over time. Before 1980, anticancer agents and gold salts were the main drugs, and the number of causative drugs (61) and case reports was small. Recently,

Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia is an inflammatory lung disease involving the distal bronchioles, respiratory bronchioles, bronchiolar ducts and alveoli. Its cause is generally unknown, but there are several known causes and associated systemic diseases. The clinical features include cough, shortness of breath and bilateral crackles. The vital capacity is slightly decreased, and the diffusing capacity is moderately to severely decreased. The high-resolution chest CT scan shows bilateral ground-glass opacities with air bronchograms and triangular, pleura-based opacities. Corticost

Connective tissue diseases are known to be one of the causes of organising pneumonia (OP). However, this association is rare and signs of OP usually occur in the context of an already diagnosed disease. We report three cases of OP preceding the articular symptoms of the underlying connective tissue disease by 3-6 months in two cases of rheumatoid arthritis and by 36 months in one patient with primary Sjögren's syndrome. The diagnosis of post-infectious OP had initially been suspected in the three cases and the patients had not been followed up further. The occurrence of OP preceding articular

We present a case of organizing pneumonia associated with lymphangitic spread of ovarian carcinoma in a 60-year-old Hispanic female with progressive dyspnea, hypoxemia, and bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, and she had rapid clinical and radiographic improvement. Malignancy-associated organizing pneumonia has most often been reported in bone-marrow transplant and breast-cancer patients receiving radiation therapy. Data regarding organizing pneumonia in association with other malignancies is quite limited.

We report the case of a 42-year-old male who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for acute myelogenous leukemia, and then developed pneumonitis with a bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP)-like shadow. When he came with exertional dyspnea four months after BMT, the chest X-ray and CT findings disclosed bilateral infiltration, and remarkable elevation of his serum KL-6 level, a monitoring marker for disease activity in interstitial lung disease. Although organizing pneumonia (OP) was revealed by a transbronchial lung biopsy, no pathogen was detected in bacteria

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used to treat hematologic disorders and as an adjunct treatment for solid organ malignancies. After undergoing transplantation, patients are at risk for opportunistic infections and other complications caused by dysfunction of the immune system. Pulmonary complications include cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, opportunistic pneumonias caused by Aspergillus and Zygomycetes species and cytomegalovirus, alveolar hemorrhage, and constrictive bronchiolitis. Abdominal complications include hepatic veno-occlusive disease, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), co…

A 17-year-old previously healthy male presented with acute hypoxic respiratory failure after one month of progressively worsening dyspnea on exertion, non-productive cough, fevers, and weight loss. He was initially discharged on oral steroids with a working diagnosis of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, but was readmitted after one month for acute hypoxic respiratory failure. Extensive laboratory workup, including serum angiotensin converting enzyme level, hypersensitivity pneumonitis panel, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cultures, was normal. Computed tomography scan of the chest revealed d…

We report a case of a 61-year-old man with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) complicated with refractory optic neuritis and maxillary osteomyelitis. He had been treated with prednisolone (PSL) as cryptogenic organizing pneumonia in the respiratory department for 2 years. Afterward, he complained tenderness of paranasal sinuses and rapidly progressive visual loss of the left eye. Although both MPO-ANCA and PR3-ANCA were negative, he was diagnosed as GPA based on the American College of Rheumatology 1990 criteria. Ophthalmologic and oral examination revealed left optic neuritis and destruct…

BACKGROUND: Lipoid pneumonia (LP) is a rare disease caused by the accumulation of lipids and lipid-laden macrophages in the alveoli inducing damage. LP is difficult to differentiate from other similar diseases without pathological evidence, such as upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), pneumonia, cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP), pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), lung mucinous adenocarcinoma and pulmonary edema. Given the high misdiagnosis rate and limited statistical clinical and treatment data, there is an urgent need for novel indicators of LP. Superoxide dismutase type1 (SOD1…

Diffuse pulmonary ossification (DiPO) is characterised by widespread ectopic bone formation in the lungs. Idiopathic DiPO (I-DiPO) poses significant diagnostic challenges and its ossification mechanism remains unclear. Cicatricial organising pneumonia (CiOP) lesions form fibrous nodules without damaging lung structure. We investigated the histopathological features of I-DiPO, focusing on the surrounding fibrosis, and compared them with those of secondary DiPO (S-DiPO). An analysis was conducted using data from a nationwide DiPO survey in Japan. The dataset included clinical, radiological, and

Community-acquired pneumonia is a common condition and 6-24% of patients will fail to improve as expected. We present a patient who was initially treated for community-acquired pneumonia but did not make the anticipated recovery. We explore potential differentials, and the investigation and management of the rare condition we subsequently diagnosed.

A 57-year-old woman with SAPHO (synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis) syndrome presented with recurrent episodes of pneumonia. She was treated with multiple courses of antibiotics with no success. The transbronchial biopsy undertaken via bronchoscopy revealed organising pneumonia (OP). She was treated with steroids and responded well with full clinical recovery and normalisation of her chest X-ray.To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of OP in association with SAPHO syndrome. This case report highlights the importance of considering OP in patients with SAPHO syndrome who
