Catalytic ozonation is a widely used advanced oxidation process for treating refractory organic wastewater; yet, the variability in dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition complicates reaction mechanisms. A critical challenge lies in designing optimal catalysts tailored to wastewater characteristics, and this factor has seldom been systematically explored. Here, we integrated principal component analysis with correlation analysis to link wastewater properties to catalyst structural descriptors. Representative catalyst Cu@Al2O3 was used to treat three refractory wastewaters via catalytic ozo

Phosphorus (P) speciation in natural environments is shaped by mineral interactions. Manganese oxy(hydr)oxides (MnOx) are powerful oxidants in nature and may promote the oxidative transformation of organic P compounds; yet little is known about the role of MnOx in the molecular transformation and speciation of P from natural organic matter. Here, we investigated the molecular transformation of vermicompost-derived organic P under acidic and alkaline pH conditions in dissolved organic matter (DOM) and soil over a 35 d period. Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure revealed the f

Increasing wildfire frequency, a consequence of global climate change, releases incomplete combustion byproducts such as aquatic pyrogenic dissolved organic matter (DOM) and black carbon (DBC) into waters, posing a threat to water security. In August 2022, a series of severe wildfires occurred in Chongqing, China. Samples from seven locations along the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers revealed DBC, quantified by the benzene poly(carboxylic acid) (BPCA) method, comprising 9.5-19.2% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). High concentrations of BPCA-DBC with significant polycondensation were detected near

The copper complexing of dissolved organic matter released from hydrochar (HDOM) affects the former's environmental behavior. In this study, how hydrothermal temperatures (180, 220 and 260 °C) influence the molecular-level constitutions and Cu(II) binding features of HDOM were elucidated via fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and multi-spectroscopic analysis. The findings demonstrated that the almost HDOM molecules had the traits of lower polarity and higher hydrophobicity. As the hydrothermal temperature increased, the molecules with particularly high relative strengt

Spatially resolved metabolomics enables the investigation of tumoral metabolites in situ. Inter- and intratumor heterogeneity are key factors associated with patient outcomes. Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is an exceedingly rare tumor associated with poor survival. Its clinical prognosis is highly variable, but the contributions of tumor metabolic heterogeneity have not been investigated thus far to our knowledge. An in-depth understanding of tumor heterogeneity requires molecular feature-based identification of tumor subpopulations associated with tumor aggressiveness. Here, using spatial me

Brown carbon (BrC) is one of the most mysterious aerosol components responsible for global warming and air pollution. Iron (Fe)-induced catalytic oxidation of ubiquitous phenolic compounds has been considered as a potential pathway for BrC formation in the dark. However, the reaction mechanism and product composition are still poorly understood. Herein, 13 phenolic precursors were employed to react with Fe under environmentally relevant conditions. Using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, a total of 764 unique molecular formulas were identified, and over 85% of them c

Phosphate release from particulate organic matter (POM) dominates phosphorus (P) cycling in aquatic ecosystems. However, the mechanisms underlying P release from POM remain poorly understood because of complex fractionation and analytical challenges. In this study, the release of dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) during POM photodegradation was assessed using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). POM in suspension was significantly photodegraded under light irradiation, concomitantly with the pr

Patients with the renal phosphate-wasting disease X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) and Hyp mice, the murine homolog of XLH, are characterized by loss-of-function mutations in phosphate-regulating endopeptidase homolog X-linked (PHEX), leading to excessive secretion of the bone-derived phosphotropic hormone FGF23. The mineralization defect in patients with XLH and Hyp mice is caused by a combination of hypophosphatemia and local accumulation of mineralization-inhibiting molecules in bone. However, the mechanism by which PHEX deficiency regulates bone cell metabolism remains elusive. Here, we use

Field desorption (FD) traditionally is an ionization technique in mass spectrometry (MS) that is performed in high vacuum. So far only two studies have explored FD at atmospheric pressure or even superatmospheric pressure, respectively. This work pursues ion desorption from 13-µm activated tungsten emitters at atmospheric pressure. The emitters are positioned in front of the atmospheric pressure interface of a Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer and the entrance electrode of the interface is set to 3-5 kV with respect to the emitter. Under these conditions posi

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) utilizes an extensively glycosylated surface spike (S) protein to mediate host cell entry and the S protein glycosylation is strongly implicated in altering viral binding/function and infectivity. However, the structures and relative abundance of the new O-glycans found on the S protein regional-binding domain (S-RBD) remain cryptic because of the challenges in intact glycoform analysis. Here, we report the complete structural characterization of intact O-glycan proteoforms using native top-down mass spectrometry (MS). By combining t

Asymptomatic anthracosis is the accumulation of black carbon particles in adult human lungs. It is a common occurrence, but the pathophysiologic significance of anthracosis is debatable. Using in situ high mass resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry imaging analysis, we discovered noxious carbon-bound exogenous compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), tobacco-specific nitrosamines, or aromatic amines, in a series of 330 patients with lung cancer in highly variable and unique patterns.

Recent genetic examinations and multisteroid profiles have provided the basis for subclassification of aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs). The objective of the current study was to produce a comprehensive, high-resolution mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) map of APAs in relation to morphometry, immunohistochemical profiles, mutational status, and clinical outcome. The study cohort comprised 136 patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance MSI was conducted, and metabolite profiles were analyzed with genot

Primary aldosteronism is a secondary hypertensive disease caused by autonomous aldosterone production that often caused by an aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). Immunohistochemistry of aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) shows the presence of aldosterone-producing cell clusters (APCCs) even in non-primary aldosteronism adult adrenal cortex. An APCC-like structure also exists as possible APCC-to-APA transitional lesions (a speculative designation) in primary aldosteronism adrenals. However, whether APCCs produce aldosterone or 18-oxocortisol, a potential serum marker of APA, remains unknown becaus

Platinum drugs have become one of the most important kinds of chemotherapy agents, and the interactions of these drugs with proteins play very important roles in their side effects and drug resistance. However, it is still a challenge to determine the binding sites of platinum drugs in proteins with multiple disulfide bonds and stable three-dimensional structures using mass spectrometry. Here, the interaction between cisplatin and hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL), a multi-disulfide-bond-containing protein with a stable three-dimensional structure, was investigated using Fourier transform ion cycl

With the Nasonia vitripennis genome sequences available, we attempted to determine the proteins present in venom by two different approaches. First, we searched for the transcripts of venom proteins by a bioinformatic approach using amino acid sequences of known hymenopteran venom proteins. Second, we performed proteomic analyses of crude N. vitripennis venom removed from the venom reservoir, implementing both an off-line two-dimensional liquid chromatography matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time-of-flight (2D-LC-MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) and a two-dimensional liquid chroma

PRESAGE is a solid dosimeter based on a clear polyurethane matrix doped with radiochromic components (leuco dyes). On exposure to ionizing radiation a colour change is generated in the dosimeter, and hence an optical absorption or optical density change that can be read out by optical CT. The main focus of present investigations has been to investigate the possible LET dependence of PRESAGE to the dose deposited at the Bragg maxima using proton beam absorbed dose measurements, and the linearity of response of the dosimeter. Proton irradiations were performed using the proton beam facility at t

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is the process responsible for eliminating most ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage from DNA, as well as base alterations caused by a variety of mutagens. The xeroderma pigmentosum group A complementing protein (XPA) is believed to be involved in the early step of NER by recognizing and binding damaged DNA. Recent work has suggested that electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) can be an effective tool for the study of protein-DNA complexes. We have used ESI-Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometry to examine the cisplatin-add

Triethylene thiophosphoramide, an alkylating agent of value as a palliative in cases of neoplastic disease and reticulosis, has been effective in preventing vascularization of the cornea when used locally. Since recurrent pterygium, a persistent clinical problem, particularly in the Western states, is preceded by corneal vascularization and fibroplastic proliferation, it is possible that this drug when used topically may be useful in obviating to some extent the use of radiation, which must be used with great caution to avoid the production of cataract. In the treatment of gram-negative bacter

INTRODUCTION: Copper-64 (64Cu, t1/2 = 12.7 h) is a positron emitter well suited for theranostic applications with beta-emitting 67Cu for targeted molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy. The present work aims to evaluate the radionuclidic purity and radiochemistry of 64Cu produced via the 68Zn(p,nα)64Cu nuclear reaction. Macrocyclic chelators DOTA, NOTA, TETA, and prostate-specific membrane antigen ligand PSMA I&T were radiolabeled with purified 64Cu and tested for in vitro stability. [64Cu]Cu-PSMA I&T was used to demonstrate in vivo PET imaging using 64Cu synthesized via the 68Zn(p,nα)64Cu
