The rat carotid body superfused with low pO2 exhibited an optical absorbance spectrum which resembles the reduced spectrum of the NADPH oxidase in neutrophils. Avian haemosporidia are a group of vector-borne hemoparasites that are non-pathogenic to native bird hosts; however, some species/lineages cause severe disease or death in poultry and non-native birds. We investigated haemosporidian parasites in wild bird carcasses collected from four prefectures in eastern Japan. We report on a 25-year-old patient with isolated mitochondrial complex III deficiency and a new heteroplasmic mutation (T14849C) in the cytochrome b gene. He suffered from septo-optic dysplasia, retinitis pigmentosa, exercise intolerance, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and rhabdomyolysis. A HESX1 mutation was excluded as a cause of his septo-optic dysplasia.
