Chemical clearing and dehydration of GFP expressing mouse brains.

Generally, chemical tissue clearing is performed by a solution consisting of two parts benzyl benzoate and one part benzyl alcohol. However, … al clearing, staining, and embedding of biological samples mostly requires careful foregoing tissue dehydration. The commonly applied tissue dehydration medium is ethanol, which also can markedly impair GFP fluorescence. Screening for a substitute also for ethanol we found that tetrahydrofuran (CAS 109-99-9) is a more GFP-friendly dehydration medium than etha …

Severe diarrhea-dehydration in infancy permanently alters auditory function.

Of the myriad etiologies of sensorineural hearing impairment, metabolic stress is rarely considered. I posit that severe dehydration in conjunction with hypoxia, at least during infancy, prompts permanent changes in the cochlea. In a population-based prospective study of otitis media, children without otitis were found to have at age 4-8 years, worse auditory thresholds if as an infant had been hospitalized for diarrhea-dehydration. What is more, stapedius reflex thresholds tended to be lower in children who had been hospitalized for diarrhea-dehydration: that is, less acoustic energy for arou…

In utero extracellular dehydration modifies thirst in neonatal rats.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal extracellular dehydration during pregnancy in rats on the development of thirst mechanisms in the offspring. Pregnant rats underwent three episodes of extracellular dehydration induced by injecting s.c. 15ml/kg b.w. of a 20% wt/vol solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in saline. The treatment given on days 14, 17 and 20 postconception is thought to induce endocrine and natriophilic responses similar to those elicited by vomiting. The offspring were tested for their responses to three different thirst stimuli at 2, 4 and 6 da…

Rehospitalization for neonatal dehydration: a nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of neonatal dehydration leading to rehospitalization, whether clinical and health services data could predict its occurrence, and the outcome of dehydrated infants. METHODS: We employed a retrospective case-control design nested within a cohort of 51 383 newborns weighing 2000 g or more, with a gestational age of 36 weeks or more born at 11 Kaiser Permanente hospitals during 1995 and 1996. Cases were 110 infants who were rehospitalized within 15 days of discharge with dehydration, and who either had 12% or greater weight loss or a serum sodium level of 1…

Dehydration, hydration behavior, and structural analysis of fenoprofen calcium.

Fenoprofen calcium (FC) is a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic agent. The dehydration behavior of FC dihydrate and the rehydration of the dried FC were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD). The stoichiometry, the crystal packing arrangement, and water environments in FC dihydrate were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The Arrhenius plot (natural logarithm of the dehydration rate constant versus the reciprocal of absolute temperature) for FC d…

[Hypertonic dehydration in "silent" malnutrition of breast-fed infants].

Two firstborn, breast-fed infants (delivery at home) were admitted to the hospital in a critical state of hypernatraemic dehydration. Case 1, a boy aged 13 days, had suffered 1220 g loss of weight since birth (31%), his serum sodium concentration was 180 mmol/l. Case 2, a girl aged 7 days, had lost 610 g since birth (18%); her serum sodium level was 159 mmol/l. In both cases poor professional support of lactation and lack of weight control had resulted in unnoticed severe malnutrition. After slow rehydration recovery was uneventful. Closer monitoring of babies' weight, e.g. twice a week, is ad…

Thirst and vasopressin secretion counteract dehydration in newborn infants.

OBJECTIVE AND STUDY DESIGN: Our goal was to study the water balance in healthy breast-fed infants (n = 139) during their first 5 days, by cross-sectional measurements of body weight, serum sodium, serum osmolality, and hematocrit. We also investigated infants' capacity to conserve body water by increased secretion of vasopressin, the main antidiuretic hormone in human beings. RESULTS: The maximal body weight reduction was 5.7% +/- 1.7% (mean +/- SD) of birth weight and most infants started to gain weight when they were 3 days old. The serum sodium level at 16 +/- 4 hours (on day of birth) was

Glycerol dehydration tests in Ménière's disorder using extratympanic electrocochleography.

Eleven patients with classical Ménière's disorder were examined electrophysiologically using extratympanic electrocochleography. All had been fully investigated audiologically and by electronystagmography. In addition to the classical triad of symptoms, 7 complained also of fullness or blockage in the ear, this symptoms being associated with fluctuation of the deafness. All patients showed the characteristic enhancement of the SP component of the AP/SP waveform. Following glycerol the SP component was reduced in amplitude, producing a decrease in the width of the waveform. Maximum reduction oc

Starvation with hypernatremic dehydration in two breast-fed infants.

Unrecognized breast feeding malnutrition may rapidly lead to life-threatening or neurologically devastating consequences. With the increased interest in lactation, it is important that physicians, dietitians, and nurses provide counseling to parents regarding the benefits and difficulties of breast feeding. Appropriate education, assessment of the infant's vigor and maternal milk supply prior to release from the hospital, and close follow-up evaluation are all necessary to help a mother feed successfully, to detect a developing problem, and to avert a potentially serious condition in the baby.

Erythrocyte disorders leading to potassium loss and cellular dehydration.

RBC K loss and cellular dehydration are associated with a variety of normal and abnormal erythrocyte conditions. In some cases (normal RBC aging, pyruvate-kinase-deficient RBCs and irreversibly sickled cells) cation and water changes are related to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) depletion and to increased RBC calcium content. In other disorders, such as hereditary xerocytosis, cation depletion and cellular hydration are not related to altered energy or calcium metabolism. Rather, this condition is thought to be due to a structural membrane defect which is manifested by imbalanced cation leaks (K…

[Local incidence of different types of dehydration (author's transl)].

A total of 2,298 dehydrated infants, among 9,674 infants admitted to Emergency Unit and Intensive Care Unit of Clinica Infantil "La Paz" between 1970--1974 are analyzed. The annual incidence of the different types of hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic dehydration is studied. The peculiarities of the data are discussed and compared with those described by other authors. High incidence of hypertonic dehydration (25.4%) is emphasized.

The circle of Willis revisited: Forebrain dehydration sensing facilitated by the anterior communicating artery: How hemodynamic properties facilitate more efficient dehydration sensing in amniotes.

We hypothesize that threat of dehydration provided selection pressure for the evolutionary emergence and persistence of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA - the inter-arterial connection that completes the Circle of Willis) in early amniotes. The ACoA is a hemodynamically insignificant artery, but, as we argue in this paper, its privileged position outside the blood-brain barrier gives it a crucial sensing function for the osmolarity of the blood against the background of the rest of the brain, which efficiently protects itself from dehydration. Till now, the questions of why the ACoA evo…

Controlled Ion Dehydration-Driven Catalysis Enabled by Reverse-Mode Nanofiltration.

Catalysis under nanoscale confinement is widely pursued, but practical systems remain limited by a persistent contradiction: maximizing confinement-enhanced reactivity usually increases the residence time and accelerates pore failure. Here we present a ceramic nanofiltration platform that resolves this trade-off by coupling subnanometer confinement with transient, flow-through ion dehydration. The membrane is constructed by atomic layer deposition on a hierarchical α-Al2O3/γ-Al2O3 scaffold, yielding a robust, ultrathin Al2O3 active layer with tunable nanochannels and minimized transport distan…

Hypernatremic Dehydration in Breastfed Neonates: Clinical Findings and Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD) is a dangerous disease that can lead to hospitalization of the infant, serious complications, and death. Despite the significant advantages of breast milk for both the mother and the baby, some neonates who are exclusively breastfed experience malnutrition in the first few days. RESEARCH AIM: This study aims to evaluate the clinical presentations, maternal and neonatal risk factors, and preventive strategies for hypernatremic dehydration in term and late-preterm infants who were exclusively breastfed. METHODS: In this study, neonates who w…

Association Between Hyperuricemia and Dehydration in Children With Acute Gastroenteritis.

OBJECTIVES: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is one of the most common diseases in children, and detecting dehydration status is important for managing it. Volume depletion and altered urate excretion through the gastrointestinal tract can cause hyperuricemia. This study aimed to evaluate the role of hyperuricemia in assessing the severity of dehydration in children. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients aged 7 to 18 years who were diagnosed with AGE. We used both the clinical dehydration scale and measured amount of weight loss at the time of emergency room visiting to evaluate the …
