The EEG of mildly retarded children: developmental, classificatory, and topographic aspects.

Our investigation was concerned with 25 children, 10-13 years old, with an IQ 50-70 ("mild mental retardation," following the ICD). Among these, 14 attended a school for the mentally retarded and 11 one for the learning disabled. A control group was recruited, matched in age, sex and social class. The unipolar 8-channel record of EEG at rest was subjected to blind clinical rating, and a computerized analysis (broad band spectral parameters delta, theta, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1, beta 2). A significantly higher frequency of paroxysms was found by the clinical rating. It also allowed the diagnos

Genotype (cystatin C) and EEG phenotype in Alzheimer disease and mild cognitive impairment: a multicentric study.

Previous findings demonstrated that haplotype B of CST3, the gene coding for cystatin C, is a recessive risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD; Finckh, U., von der Kammer, H., Velden, J., Michel, T., Andresen, B., Deng, A., Zhang, J., Muller-Thomsen, T., Zuchowski, K., Menzer, G., Mann, U., Papassotiropoulos, A., Heun, R., Zurdel, J., Holst, F., Benussi, L., Stoppe, G., Reiss, J., Miserez, A.R., Staehelin, H.B., Rebeck, G.W., Hyman, B.T., Binetti, G., Hock, C., Growdon, J.H., Nitsch, R.M., 2000. Anti-NMDA-R encephalitis: Should we consider extreme delta brush as electrical status epilepticus?

Seizures are common clinical manifestations in anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDA-R) encephalitis, among other neurological and psychiatric symptoms. During the course of the disease, some specific EEG patterns have been described: generalized rhythmic delta activity (GRDA) and extreme delta brush (EDB). In comatose patients, the association of these EEG abnormalities with subtle motor manifestations can suggest ongoing non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). We report the case of a 28-year-old woman admitted for a clinical presentation typical of anti-NMDA-R encephalitis, which w

Clinical associations of occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity.

Association of occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity with absence seizures has been well documented in the published literature. Two recent studies have also described an association with focal seizures. After obtaining approval from our Institutional Review Board, all electroencephalograms with occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity at our institution between July 1, 2006 and December 31, 2009 were identified. Charts of these patients were reviewed to collect clinical data. A matched comparison group was assembled. Thirty-one of the patients who met criteria had evaluable cli

[Electrical activity of the cortex and subcortical structures during the development of hypoxia due to blood loss].

Previous experiments on dogs showed that in several cases, along with the development of hypoxia, polymorphous delta-waves changed into synchronous oscillations, also of delta range, the so-called standard slow complexes (SSC). The new experimental data showed discharges of neuronal pool during SSC to be present in the caudate nucleus, lateral and medial thalamus, hypothalamus, hypocampus, n. amygdale, and mesencephalic reticular formation. The most frequent neuronal pulse activity was connected with the second half of the SSC negative phase (P is less than 0.01). Discharge flashes of the neur

The delta/alpha ratio in sleep EEG increases with the severity of depression in patients over 50 years old.

BACKGROUND: The delta/alpha ratio (DAR) of sleep electroencephalography (EEG) frequency band parameters is closely related to cognitive control in healthy adults, but its role in patients with depression over the age of 50 remains unclear. Currently, a comprehensive and reliable indicator to distinguish the severity of depression in this population is still lacking. METHODS: This study included 88 participants, all of whom underwent overnight polysomnography. Among them, 30 were in the normal control group (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) ≤ 8), 22 in the mild-to-moderate depression gr

Prefrontal D1 Dopamine-Receptor Neurons and Delta Resonance in Interval Timing.

Considerable evidence has shown that prefrontal neurons expressing D1-type dopamine receptors (D1DRs) are critical for working memory, flexibility, and timing. This line of work predicts that frontal neurons expressing D1DRs mediate cognitive processing. During timing tasks, one form this cognitive processing might take is time-dependent ramping activity-monotonic changes in firing rate over time. Thus, we hypothesized the prefrontal D1DR+ neurons would strongly exhibit time-dependent ramping during interval timing. We tested this idea using an interval-timing task in which we used optogenetic

Meditation music improved the quality of suturing in an experimental bypass procedure.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgeons are vulnerable to additional noise in their natural operating environment. Noise exposure is associated with reduced cognitive function, inability to concentrate, and nervousness. Mediation music provides an opportunity to create a calmer environment which may reduce stress during surgery. METHODS: A pilot study was performed to find a suitable task, meditation music of surgeon's choice, and operation noise and to reach a certain level of training. For the main experiment, two neurosurgeons with different microsurgical experience used real operation noise and meditat

EEG in the healthy term newborn within 12 hours of birth.

OBJECTIVE: To characterise and quantify the EEG during sleep in healthy newborns in the early newborn period. METHODS: Continuous multi-channel video-EEG data was recorded for up to 2 hours in normal newborns within 12 hours of birth. The total amount of active (AS) and quiet sleep (QS) was calculated in the first hour of recording. The EEG signal was quantitatively analysed for symmetry and synchrony. Spectral edge frequency (SEF), spectral entropy (H) and relative delta power (delta(R)) were calculated for a ten-minute segment of AS and QS in each recording. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon rank

Relationship of sigma activity to sleep interictal epileptic discharges: a study in children affected by benign epilepsy with occipital paroxysms.

INTRODUCTION: By applying spectral analysis techniques we recently showed that Interictal Epileptic Discharges (IEDs) are modulated by sleep spindle synchronization mechanisms (sigma activity, SA, 12. 0-16.0 Hz). This finding applies to both benign epilepsy of childhood with rolandic spikes (BECRS), to symptomatic epilepsy of childhood strongly activated by sleep and to the Landau-Kleffner syndrome. These results are quite different from those found in adult partial epileptic patients where slow wave activity (SWA, 0. 5-4.5 Hz) plays the main role in the modulation of IEDs during sleep. This f

Fourteen and six c/sec positive bursts in comatose patients.

Of ten patients with Reye's syndrome, there were five with stage II or III coma where EEGs revealed 14 c/sec positive bursts in a background of diffuse delta waves. Positive bursts disappeared upon EEG improvement in two survivors and when the EEG became nearly isoelectric in two other patients. Although 14 and 6 c/sec positive bursts are seen commonly during sleep in normal young persons, their occurence in association with diffuse delta waves in acutely ill, comatose patients has been rarely reported. It is not certain whether the present findings should be regarded as selective preservation

EEG and ANS markers of attention response in vegetative state: Different responses to own vs. other names.

Covert measures of information-processing are valuable tools to support assessment of patients' disorders of consciousness because of their potential in revealing what seem to be hidden. Those measures allow to overcome some limitations of traditional behavioural methods, which are often biased by difficulties in detecting reliable patients' responses. Therefore, we aimed at exploring patterns of psychophysiological responses (electroencephalography - EEG, skin conductance level - SCL, skin conductance response - SCR, heart rate - HR) marking potentially-preserved processing of personally-rele

Nonrestorative sleep.

The current review presents the empirical findings on varying definitions of nonrestorative sleep (NRS). Despite lacking a standard, operational definition, NRS is investigated in research studies and included in diagnostic manuals. However, because of the absence of standardization, the conclusions that can be drawn about NRS based on the current body of empirical literature are limited. A feeling of being unrefreshed upon awakening that is not accounted for by lack of sleep may occur among a substantial percentage of the population. This experience is correlated with daytime impairment, pain

Spinal cord stimulation modulates frontal delta and gamma in patients of minimally consciousness state.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been suggested as a therapeutic technique for treating patients with disorder of consciousness (DOC). Although studies have reported its benefits for patients, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of SCS on the EEG of patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS), which would allow us to explore the possible workings underpinning of the approach. Resting state EEG was recorded before and immediately after SCS, using various frequencies (5Hz, 20Hz, 50Hz, 70Hz and 100Hz), for 11 patients in

Pathophysiological implication of CaV3.1 T-type Ca2+ channels in trigeminal neuropathic pain.

A crucial pathophysiological issue concerning central neuropathic pain is the modification of sensory processing by abnormally increased low-frequency brain rhythms. Here we explore the molecular mechanisms responsible for such abnormal rhythmicity and its relation to neuropathic pain syndrome. Toward this aim, we investigated the behavioral and electrophysiological consequences of trigeminal neuropathic pain following infraorbital nerve ligations in CaV3.1 T-type Ca(2+) channel knockout and wild-type mice. CaV3.1 knockout mice had decreased mechanical hypersensitivity and reduced low-frequenc

[Cerebral ischemia during implantation of automatic defibrillators].

In order to study the influence of repetitive episodes of ventricular fibrillation (VF) during defibrillator implantation on the electrical activity of the brain, we performed an electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring during implantation procedure in 18 patients. For defibrillation threshold testing 62 episodes of VF (1-6 episodes per patient) were induced. The mean duration of VF was 20 +/- 12 s; the mean duration of hypotension during an episode (defined as a mean arterial pressure of 50 mm Hg or less) was 33 +/- 16 s. EEG monitoring was performed using the International 10-20 System. The

The EEG in deep midline lesions.

We studied the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 154 patients with well-defined diencephalic, mesencephalic, or posterior fossa lesions. Electrographic and clinical parameters were statistically evaluated. The results indicated considerable overlap of EEG abnormalities from different subcortical sites. Focal or lateralized abnormalities were relatively specific, suggesting a diencephalic lesion, whereas bilateral paroxysmal slow-wave disturbances were unspecific and not of precise diagnostic significance. There was no specific feature in this series to clearly distinguish the EEG pattern in deep

Influence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation attack on brain natriuretic peptide secretion.

OBJECTIVES: Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentration is higher during atrial fibrillation (Af) than sinus rhythm, based on studies of electrical defibrillation treatment of patients with chronic Af. However, the change in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAf) is not well known. This study investigated such changes and the relationship between BNP and Af. METHODS: BNP levels were successfully measured at three time points: before Af attack, during Af attack, and after (spontaneous or pharmacological) termination of 68 consecutive Af attacks in 35 outpatients with PAf (23 men, 12 wom

A neurophysiological basis for aperiodic EEG and the background spectral trend.

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) display a mixture of rhythmic and broadband fluctuations, the latter manifesting as an apparent 1/f spectral trend. While network oscillations are known to generate rhythmic EEG, the neural basis of broadband EEG remains unexplained. Here, we use biophysical modelling to show that aperiodic neural activity can generate detectable scalp potentials and shape broadband EEG features, but that these aperiodic signals do not significantly perturb brain rhythm quantification. Further model analysis demonstrated that rhythmic EEG signals are profoundly corrupted by shifts
