The most frequent odontogenic developing cyst linked with an impacted tooth is the dentigerous cyst. They are normally asymptomatic and are identified during routine radiography tests to see if a tooth is missing from the arch. This case report is designed to demonstrate how an enucleated dentigerous cyst with impacted teeth led to the spontaneous recovery of a bone defect without the need for bone graft. The radiographic scan (OPG) 6 months after cystectomy revealed the creation of adequate bone for the insertion of the implants. As a result of this procedure, the patient's functional, physio…

Dentigerous cysts are common odontogenic cysts of the jaw but are rarely associated with supernumerary teeth. Few cases of large dentigerous cysts associated with anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth have been reported. The English literature has documented only four cases of dentigerous cysts>40 mm in diameter associated with supernumerary teeth. A 47-year-old man was referred to our hospital, complaining of minor pain in the maxillary gingiva. Computed tomography revealed a well-defined oval unilocular radiolucent lesion (50×45×35 mm) in the right maxilla, including two impacted supernumer…

A Japanese male aged 61 presented with persistent pain in the left posterior area of the mandible for several weeks. A panoramic X-ray revealed a unilocular lesion showing characteristics of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted third molar. A cystectomy was performed and histopathological examination revealed a cystic lesion with a fibrous wall. The lumen was covered with non-keratinizing squamous cells with obvious intercellular bridges, which were intermingled with partially ciliated goblet-cell-type mucous and columnar cells. Such cystic lesions should be carefully examined to dis…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), and CD105 in odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and radicular cysts (RCs).
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty cases of OKCs, 20 DCs, and 20 RCs were analyzed. A labeling index (LI), which expresses the percentage of NF-κB-stained nuclei, was calculated for the analysis of NF-κB expression. Expression of MMP-9 in the epithelium and in the capsule of each lesion was scored as 0 (<10% stained cells), 1 (10%-50% stained cells), or 2 (>50% sta…

Dentigerous cysts are developmental odontogenic cysts commonly associated with impacted teeth; however, their occurrence in young children involving developing premolars is relatively rare. This report describes the case of an eight-year-old male who presented with pain and swelling in the lower left posterior region of the jaw. Clinical examination revealed a grossly carious primary molar with buccal cortical expansion. Radiographic findings showed a well-defined unilocular radiolucency associated with the crown of the developing mandibular second premolar, causing displacement of the tooth b…

AIM: The study aims to compare the expression of CK7 and p63 proteins in dentigerous cysts (DCs) and glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs), evaluating their potential as predictors of neoplastic transformation into mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). Additionally, it seeks to explore the possible roles of inflammation and mucous cell metaplasia in the malignant transformation of these cysts.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty tissue blocks were divided into three groups with two subgroups each (10 cases). Diagnoses were confirmed using Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, followed by immunohistochemical s…

In dental practice, impacted canines are common clinical conditions that compromise tooth mobility, thereby severely affecting functionality and esthetics. They also represent a significant challenge, particularly when associated with odontogenic pathologies such as dentigerous cysts and odontomas. These entities, despite benign, can cause complications, including tooth displacement, root resorption, and alterations in normal eruption, compromising both esthetics and function. We present the case of a 15-year-old female patient with no relevant medical history who attended for orthodontic trea…

Dentigerous cysts (DC) in the maxillary sinus are rare and pose challenges for effective treatment. Despite various available surgical techniques, a definitive approach remains debated. This study introduces a markerless Augmented Reality Assisted Surgery (ARAS) system that utilizes tooth image recognition and surgical simulation to enhance the precision of maxillary sinus DC extractions. Using advanced technology, such as 3-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanning and CT imaging for accurate data capture, the system aligns virtual models with patient anatomy without external markers, demonstrating…

The correct diagnosis is fundamental for the appropriate treatment to be employed in a particular pathology. The best treatment is not the o … uation of the patient beyond the limits of the oral cavity, as well as to report two cases of large dentigerous cysts, surgically treated conservatively through marsupialisation, without the need for re-approach for enucleation and without recurrences over a 20-year period.

Among developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous type is the second most prevailing one. It is a benign intraosseous lesion commonly affecting the mandibular region. Dentigerous cysts present a high prevalence in children as they can be caused by the eruption of permanent teeth or the infection of deciduous ones. The adopted treatment modalities include enucleation (cystectomy), marsupialization, and decompression. Decompression maintains communication between the cyst and the oral medium through a sutured fixed device, namely an acrylic stent or a pretrimmed disposable suction tube. In …

Endoscopic techniques have been applied to oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Previous studies have proved their practicability in the treatment of osteomyelitis of the mandible and displaced residual roots in the maxillary sinus. In this report, two patients with dentigerous cysts in the maxillary sinus underwent endoscope-assisted curettage. Both patients were successfully cured without recurrent lesions or any complications. The follow-up found that the bone cavities had shrunk. An endoscope-assisted Caldwell-Luc operation provided clear visibility of the surgical field and preserved the muc…

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are common odontogenic cysts associated with unerupted teeth. We describe a previously unreported case of a multidisciplinary approach using surgical, orthodontic, and implant treatment to establish the occlusion for a patient with a maxillary dentigerous cyst.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old Japanese woman visited our hospital with a chief complaint of gingival swelling in her anterior maxillary region, midline diastema, and tooth crowding. Her main symptom was this gingival swelling. A panoramic radiograph revealed a radiolucent area, 30 mm in diameter, round…

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are the most prevalent developmental odontogenic cysts that occur in middle-aged individuals. They frequently originate from the epithelial remnants of tooth-forming organs. Hereby, we present a case of a 13-year-old young female patient presenting with DC that was treated successfully by marsupialization. The patient's chief complaint was the crowding of the anterior teeth. Clinical examination showed that the patient had all her permanent teeth present with a retained mandibular left second primary molar that was previously treated by pulpectomy. The radiographic exam…

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which develops due to fluid accumulation between the reduced enamel epithelium and unerupted tooth crown. The condition is frequently seen with the permanent dentition, usually associated with impacted mandibular third molars and maxillary canines. Rarely, dentigerous cyst occurs in association with a supernumerary tooth. Pain, swelling, and facial asymmetry are occasionally seen; however, they are usually asymptomatic and observed during radiographic examination. Early diagnosis and treatment planning entails thorough history taking, clini…

We report an unusual case of a displaced maxillary molar and associated dentigerous cyst within the maxillary sinus in an adolescent presenting as recurrent sinusitis. Although a rare cause of sinusitis in children, dentigerous cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis for causes of persistent or recurrent sinusitis in this age group. This report provides further evidence for obtaining imaging studies when managing pediatric sinusitis that does not respond to standard antibiotic therapy. We discuss management options for these lesions including the differential diagnoses and need …

Ectopic eruption into the dental environment is common, whereas eruption into other sites is rare. Diverse anatomical locations such as the mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, maxillary sinuses and nasal cavity can infrequently be the site of ectopic tooth eruption. One of the nondental sites for ectopic eruption is the maxillary sinus. Here, we present a case of dentigerous cyst with an ectopic maxillary canine tooth located below the floor of the right maxillary sinus in a 37-year-old man.

RATIONALE: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common odontogenic cysts and are frequently associated with impacted permanent teeth. Conventional management typically involves enucleation with extraction of the involved tooth, which often leads to tooth loss and alveolar bone resorption. This case illustrates a conservative surgical orthodontic protocol that preserved the impacted tooth, maintained alveolar bone support, and corrected the malocclusion.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 15-year-old male presented with the chief complaint of dental crowding and facial asymmetry. Clinical examination reveal…
