Insight of Ethnomedicines in Dentistry: A Brief Review.

Ethnomedicines in the literature compare the therapeutic efficacy of various herbs based on active ingredients of plants and animals. The application of phytomedicines in the field of dentistry is uncommon. The main objective of this article is to access the efficacy of ethnomedicines and newly evolving treatment modalities in reducing post-op complications following dentoalveolar surgeries. Inclusion criteria were selected according to the population, intervention, control, and outcomes (PICO) format. Case reports, case series, retrospective studies, and studies with inappropriate reporting o…

Ultrasound Imaging in Dentistry: A Literature Overview.

(1) Background: the frequency with which diagnostic tests are prescribed with exposure to ionizing radiation, a cause of biological damage, has been studied, and with much more attention, patients are subjected to these diagnostic tests for diagnosis and follow-up. This review aimed, given the recent developments of this technology, to evaluate the possible use of ultrasound in different branches of dentistry. The possibility of applying ionizing-radiation-free diagnostic exams in dentistry, overcoming the limits of this application, has led scientific research in this area to obtain interesti…

Midazolam use in pediatric dentistry: a review.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Behaviour management and dental procedures performed in very young, pre-cooperative, highly anxious, or medically disabled children are challenging tasks. Various drugs and methods have, however, been introduced to facilitate treatment for this patient population. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine used as an adjunct to behavior management techniques in the dental treatment of pediatric patients. Midazolam can be used as a safe and effective drug for conscious sedation, general anesthetic premedication, and treatment of seizures during dental procedures. Nevertheless, further research involving ped

Visual acuity and magnification devices in dentistry.

This review discusses visual acuity in dentistry and the influence of optical aids. Studies based on objective visual tests at a dental working distance were included. These studies show dramatic individual variation independent of the dentists’ age. The limitations due to presbyopia begin at an age of 40 years. Dental professionals should have their near vision tested regularly. Visual deficiencies can be compensated with magnification aids. It is important to differentiate between Galilean and Keplerian loupes. The lightweight Galilean loupes allow an almost straight posture and offer improv…

Prions in dentistry: A need to be concerned and known.

Prion diseases were first discovered by Stanley B. Prusiner who defined prions as infectious, transmissible proteinaceous particles that lack nucleic acid and are composed exclusively of a modified isoform of the noninfectious cellular prion protein (PrPC). These are incurable neurodegenerative conditions affecting both animals and humans. They may be sporadic, infectious or inherited in origin. Human prion diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob desease (CJD), Gerstmann- Straussler-Scheinker disease, Kuru and Fatal familial insomnia. Prions resist the conventional sterilization procedures and henc

The application of CamScan 2 in forensic dentistry.

Forensic dentistry plays a major role in body identification. The dental examination is very accurate and also, nowadays, in the time of a comprehensive fingerprint and DNA assessment, objectively supported. The identification, which is based on the dental documentation, leads up to 43-89% of a successful process. The purpose of the study is to describe the techniques employed by forensic odontology to identify human remains and also to provide details of some of the novel developments within this area. Comparative methods of dental identification of the unknown subject with pre-mortem clinica…

[Use of laser Doppler flowmetry in dentistry].

An early determination of pulpal vitality is crucial with respect to a correct differential diagnosis of revascularisation or necrosis and its treatment. The use of sensibility tests (cold, heat, electrical pulp test) in combination with X-ray are commonly promoted. However these tests are arbitrary, based on sensations and therefore not always reliable. In such situation the registration of 'real' pulpal blood flow and hence pulp vitality will be more than an added value. The most studied and well documented method is laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) as it is non invasive, direct and objective.

Evidence-based dentistry and the concept of harm.

Evidence-based medicine requires the integration of best research evidence with the clinician's expertise and the patient's unique values and circumstances. One of the most important issues in deciding what course of treatment to select is balancing the potential risks and benefits of treatment. A framework for evidence-based decision-making includes formulating the clinical question and then retrieving, appraising, and considering the applicability of the evidence to the patient. It is the duty of all health care providers to reduce patient risk by selecting appropriate therapies and informin

Control of blood-transmitted infections in dentistry.

As knowledge has accumulated on the blood-transmitted pathogenic agents, the contact with biological fluids (blood, plasma, saliva, etc.) from apparently healthy individuals has started to be regarded as a real professional risk for dentists. Theoretically, exposure to a contaminated biological specimen may have as a consequence transmission of infection from patient to dentist, from dentist to patient and from patient to patient via inadequately decontaminated and sterilized dental equipment. The present study is concerned with the analysis of the specific conditions that favor the occurrence

Indoor air quality in a dentistry clinic.

The purpose of this work is to assess, both experimentally and theoretically the status of air quality in a dentistry clinic of the Athens University Dentistry Faculty with respect to chemical pollutants and identify the indoor sources associated with dental activities. Total VOCs, CO(2), PM(10), PM(2.5), NO(x) and SO(2) were measured over a period of approximately three months in a selected dentistry clinic. High pollution levels during the operation hours regarding CO(2), total VOCs and Particulate Matter were found, while in the non-working periods lower levels were recorded. On the contrar…

Penicillins for the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Many dental procedures cause bacteraemia and it is believed that this may lead to bacterial endocarditis (BE) in a few people. Guidelines in many countries recommend that prior to invasive dental procedures antibiotics are administered to people at high risk of endocarditis. However, it is unclear whether the potential risks of this prophylaxis outweigh the potential benefits. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether prophylactic penicillin administration compared to no such administration or placebo before invasive dental procedures in people at increased risk of BE influences mortality,

Charlatans in dentistry: ethics of the NICO wars.

The scientific and diagnostic status of neuralgia-inducing cavitational osteonecrosis, NICO, has not been definitively established. A case is presented in favor of this diagnosis based on published literature. It is argued that the case against NICO has been made largely based on personal experiences, by innuendo, and through personal attacks rather than in scientific debate.
