Maternal postpartum depression risk differentially affects infant development across sociocultural groups.

BACKGROUND: Maternal postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern with well-documented implications for children's developmental outcomes. Despite growing evidence of these effects, limited attention has been given to potential sociocultural differences in how PPD influences child development. To address this gap, the present study utilized a nationally representative dataset to examine whether the associations between maternal PPD risk and developmental delays in children vary across two major sociocultural groups in Israel: The Jewish and Muslim-Arab populations. Investigating the association between pain and psychological vulnerabilities and postpartum depression.

Pain and psychological vulnerabilities may be associated with the development of postpartum depression (PPD) in women undergoing Cesarean delivery. However, there is limited information regarding women undergoing labor and delivery. We investigated whether pre-delivery pain and psychological vulnerabilities, and other risk factors were associated with an increased risk of PPD among laboring women. This was a secondary analysis of a clinical trial conducted between June 2017 and July 2021. The risk of PPD was assessed using an online survey on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) adminis

Temporal Dynamics of Antidepressant Response Following Brexanolone Treatment in Postpartum Depression.

Objective: Major depressive disorder with peripartum onset (also known as postpartum depression [PPD]) (DSM-5) is a debilitating condition that can be characterized by difficulty transitioning out of a negative affective state. Given the rapid clinical response typically observed with brexanolone, the treatment period provides a rare opportunity to study the dynamics of this transition. The present study examined the timing and pattern of symptom changes, including leading and residual symptoms and associated changes in self-reported maternal functioning. Methods: Using a single-arm, open-labe

Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder and postpartum depression following cesarean delivery.

Maternal mental health disorders are fairly common during the perinatal period, predominantly mood- and trauma-related disorders, first episodes or relapses. Untreated, these mental health conditions can have a significant impact on the health of the mother, her child, and family functioning. These disorders remain underdiagnosed during the postpartum period. Obstetric care providers must understand the stakes involved and recognize the need to assess mothers' emotional well-being in the postpartum period-an essential opportunity for early detection and intervention for maternal mental health

Identifying postpartum depression subtypes using natural language processing and clinical notes.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) remains vastly underdiagnosed, and its clinical heterogeneity is not well understood. Diagnosis codes in electronic health records (EHRs) alone may not identify all PPD cases, highlighting a need for novel detection approaches. OBJECTIVE: To develop a transformer-based natural language processing (NLP) method to identify patients with PPD from clinical notes in EHRs and to examine demographic and clinical heterogeneity among identified cases. METHODS: Clinical notes from 64 426 patients who gave birth between 2010 and 2023 at a major US academic medica

Clinical phenotypes of epigenetic biomarker positive versus biomarker negative postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) can be predicted by biomarkers of 3rd trimester methylation at two estrogen-responsive genes (TTC9B, HP1BP3), but the mechanism(s) by which these epigenetic changes lead to PPD are unknown. We investigated whether clinical characteristics (psychiatric histories, depression onset, stress/anxiety/trauma) differ between those with (BM+) and without (BM-) these biomarkers of PPD risk. Participants (N = 206) completed clinical diagnostic interviews and stress, anxiety, and trauma questionnaires at up to 7 visits during pregnancy and postpartum. Biomarker status was deter

The association between parental postpartum depression and offspring autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) reportedly affects up to 20% of new mothers. While parental psychiatric history has been associated with an increased likelihood of neurodevelopmental conditions in the offspring, only a few studies of clinically diagnosed PPD exist exploring associated autism spectrum disorder (ASD) outcomes and no study to date has explored the contributions of paternal PPD with ASD risk or the combined influence. METHODS: A nationwide prospective cohort of all live births in Sweden from 1997 through 2021, followed up through December 31, 2022. Associations between par

Mental health literacy on postpartum depression among university staff in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is an important public health problem which often goes unrecognized and untreated, especially in low-income settings. Poor mental health literacy of community members has been shown to create barriers to help-seeking for PPD. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the mental health literacy of postpartum depression (PPD) among staff members in a Nigerian university. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey that employed a case vignette format. A questionnaire, consisting of a socio-demographic form and a case vignette, was distributed to a convenient sample

Associations between birth experience and postpartum depression - A Cross-Sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Birth experience is a multidimensional concept that can impact life after birth, including mental health. It may contribute to the development of postpartum depression (PPD), a common postpartum condition. This study aimed to investigate whether there is an independent correlation between birth experience and PPD symptoms, while controlling for background variables. Additionally, sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with PPD symptoms were analyzed. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included participants who gave birth 6-16 weeks prior to participation, at five hospita

A comprehensive network analysis of biopsychosocial factors associated with postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated relations between a broad set of postpartum depression (PPD) risk- and protective factors, their centrality and unique relations with PPD symptoms. METHODS: Mixed graphical network models were estimated in cross-sectional data collected during Phase 7 (2012-2015) of the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Women were contacted two to six months following birth. Half of the 57,518 women were included in exploratory model 1, the other half in model 2 for cross-validation. A broad selection of biopsychosocial factors were modelled, including sociodemog

The Relationship Between Gestational Diabetes and Postpartum Depression: A Systematic Review.

This study aims to examine the relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the likelihood of postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and the Wiley Online Library were systematically searched for relevant literature. Our results included eight studies with a total of 4,209 women diagnosed with GDM and/or PPD. The prevalence of PPD in women diagnosed with GDM ranged from 6.5% to 48.4%. The included studies demonstrated that PPD was more likely to strike women with GDM. One study reported that the most severe type of GDM is more likely
