Breast Cancer Diet "BCD": A Review of Healthy Dietary Patterns to Prevent Breast Cancer Recurrence and Reduce Mortality.

Breast cancer (BC) represents the most common cancer in women, while overweight and obesity are the second preventable cause of cancer. Weight gain and fat accumulation are common after BC diagnosis; moreover, weight gain during the treatment decreases the survival rate and increases the risk of recurrence in breast cancer survivors (BCS). To reduce the risk of second primary cancer or BC recurrence, and all-cause mortality in BCS, multiple interventions have been investigated to obtain reduction in weight, BMI and/or waist circumference. The aim of this narrative review is to analyze evidence

Loxin Reduced the Inflammatory Response in the Liver and the Aortic Fatty Streak Formation in Mice Fed with a High-Fat Diet.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is the most harmful form of cholesterol associated with vascular atherosclerosis and hepatic injury, mainly due to inflammatory cell infiltration and subsequent severe tissue injury. Lox-1 is the central ox-LDL receptor expressed in endothelial and immune cells, its activation regulating inflammatory cytokines and chemotactic factor secretion. Recently, a Lox-1 truncated protein isoform lacking the ox-LDL binding domain named LOXIN has been described. We have previously shown that LOXIN overexpression blocked Lox-1-mediated ox-LDL internalization in hu

Mediterranean Diet is Associated with Reduced Risk of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Smokers: Results of Two Prospective Cohort Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking is a strong risk factor for the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). It was hypothesised that a Mediterranean diet via its anti-oxidative properties would decrease the risk of AAA, particularly among smokers. METHODS: The study population included the Cohort of Swedish Men (45 072 men) and the Swedish Mammography Cohort (36 632 women), aged 45 - 83 years at baseline. A modified Mediterranean Diet (mMED) score, including eight food groups, was calculated based on a food frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR

A High-Tryptophan Diet Reduces Seizure-Induced Respiratory Arrest and Alters the Gut Microbiota in DBA/1 Mice.

Background and Aims: Central 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) defects are responsible for the occurrence of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The DBA/1 mouse is an animal model of SUDEP since the mouse exhibits audiogenic seizure-induced respiratory arrest (S-IRA). The synthesis of central 5-HT is closely related to the gut microbiota. Moreover, emerging studies suggest a possible role for the microbiota in mitigating seizure likelihood. Based on this, we aimed to explore the effect of a high-tryptophan diet (HTD) on SUDEP as well as the synthesis and metabolism of central 5-HT. Furthermo

Strength plus Endurance Training and Individualized Diet Reduce Fat Mass in Overweight Subjects: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Studies with overweight people are a priority in order to observe the effect of the timing of intervention on pre-obesity people. The aim was to compare different physical activity programs plus an individualized hypocaloric diet on body composition in overweight subjects. A randomized controlled clinical trial was carried out in overweight adults with no history of relevant illness. Primary outcome was total fat mass (TFM). Participants were allocated into four activity programs with equal intensity and volume of exercise for 22 weeks: strength training (S), endurance training (E), strength +

Intermittent High-Fat Diet Intake Reduces Sensitivity to Intragastric Nutrient Infusion and Exogenous Amylin in Female Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent (INT) access to a high-fat diet (HFD) can induce excessive-intake phenotypes in rodents. This study hypothesized that impaired satiation responses contribute to elevated intake in an INT-HFD access model. METHODS: First, this study characterized the intake and meal patterns of female rats that were subjected to an INT HFD in which a 45% HFD was presented for 20 hours every fourth day. To examine nutrient-induced satiation, rats received intragastric infusions of saline or Ensure Plus prior to darkness-onset food access. A similar design was used to examine sensitivity

Bilirubin Nanoparticles Reduce Diet-Induced Hepatic Steatosis, Improve Fat Utilization, and Increase Plasma β-Hydroxybutyrate.

The inverse relationship of plasma bilirubin levels with liver fat accumulation has prompted the possibility of bilirubin as a therapeutic for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Here, we used diet-induced obese mice with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease treated with pegylated bilirubin (bilirubin nanoparticles) or vehicle control to determine the impact on hepatic lipid accumulation. The bilirubin nanoparticles significantly reduced hepatic fat, triglyceride accumulation, de novo lipogenesis, and serum levels of liver dysfunction marker aspartate transaminase and ApoB100 containing very-low-d

In Utero and Postnatal Exposure to High Fat, High Sucrose Diet Suppressed Testis Apoptosis and Reduced Sperm Count.

Obesity affects male fertility and maternal diabetes affects the offspring sperm epigenome. However, the effects of in utero exposure to maternal glucose intolerance in combination with postnatal high fat, high sucrose (HFHS) diet consumption on offspring spermatogenesis is not clear. The present study was designed to test these effects. One week before and during pregnancy, dams were fed either control or HFHS diet to induce gestational glucose intolerance, and returned to standard diet during lactation. Male offspring from each maternal group were split into control and HFHS-fed groups for e

Walnut Supplementation in the Diet Reduces Oxidative Damage and Improves Antioxidant Status in Transgenic Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Our previous study has shown beneficial effects of walnuts on memory and learning skills in transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD-tg). To understand underlying mechanism, we studied here whether walnuts can reduce oxidative stress in AD. From 4 months of age, experimental AD-tg mice were fed diets containing 6% (T6) or 9% walnuts (T9) (equivalent to 1 or 1.5 oz, of walnuts per day in humans) for 5, 10, or 15 months. The control groups, i.e., AD-tg (T0) and wild-type (Wt) mice, were fed diets without walnuts. Free radicals, i.e., reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, pr

A defined, plant-based diet utilized in an outpatient cardiovascular clinic effectively treats hypercholesterolemia and hypertension and reduces medications.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major economic burden in the United States. CVD risk factors, particularly hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, are typically treated with drug therapy. Five-year efficacy of such drugs to prevent CVD is estimated to be 5%. Plant-based diets have emerged as effective mitigators of these risk factors. HYPOTHESIS: The implementation of a defined, plant-based diet for 4 weeks in an outpatient clinical setting may mitigate CVD risk factors and reduce patient drug burden. METHODS: Participants consumed a plant-based diet consisting of foods prepared

Effects of corn-based reduced-starch diets using alternative carbohydrate sources on performance of lactating Holstein cows.

Increases in grain prices have led to renewed interest in feeding reduced-starch diets to lactating dairy cows. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of altering carbohydrate sources and reducing dietary starch on lactational performance, feeding behavior, and ruminal measures of Holstein dairy cows. Fifteen multiparous cows (6 ruminally cannulated) were blocked and assigned to 1 of 5 squares and used in a replicated 3×3 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Cows were fed 1 of 3 experimental diets: a control diet containing 20% brown midrib corn silage, 20% conventional corn si

Can a Mediterranean diet reduce the effects of lipodystrophy syndrome in people living with HIV? A pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV and highly active antiretroviral therapies have been associated with changes in individuals' lipid profiles and fat distribution (lipodystrophy). A pilot study was conducted for a randomised controlled trial to evaluate whether lipodystrophy in HIV patients can be controlled by adopting the low-fat and low-cholesterol diet or the modified Mediterranean diet. METHODS: Forty-eight HIV patients were randomised into two diet groups. Thirty-six (75%) completed the 1-year pilot study with regular dietetic consultations, during which time lipid levels, weight, body mass index and fat

Mediterranean diet with high-phenolic EVOO slows kidney function decline and reduces inflammation in nondialysis CKD: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the renoprotective effect of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) in patients with nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains inconsistent. This may be partly attributed to variability in the phenolic content of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), a key bioactive component. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the effect of the MedDiet on renal and cardiometabolic outcomes in adults with nondialysis CKD and to explore the role of high-phenolic EVOO as a potential effect modifier. We searched multiple databases for interventional a

Telomir-Zn restores glucose homeostasis and reduces insulin resistance in a diet-induced zebrafish model of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia driven by insulin resistance and metabolic dysregulation. Therapeutic strategies that restore insulin sensitivity remain a major unmet clinical need. In this study, we evaluated the metabolic effects of Telomir-Zn and its non-ion-chelated ligand, Telomir-1, in a diet-induced zebrafish model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Adult zebrafish were fed a high‑calorie diet for six weeks to induce obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction characterized by insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Fish were then tr
