The sulfur microbial diet and risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a prospective gene-diet study from the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota is closely related to liver diseases. The dietary pattern associated with sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in stool has been found to influence intestinal health. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether consuming the sulfur microbial diet is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: We included 143,918 participants of European descent from the UK Biobank. Information on serving sizes used per diet component was recorded by an online 24-h dietary assessment tool (Oxford WebQ). The total sulfur microbial diet score was constructed by summi

A high-fat diet in the presence of vitamin D deficiency status is associated with a negative influence on calcaneal quantitative ultrasound parameters in young adults: a cross-sectional study.

Vitamin D deficiency and a high-fat diet are considered health problems worldwide. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in young adults, factors related to the vitamin D status, and the influence of vitamin D deficiency and/or a high-fat diet on bone parameters. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that a high-fat diet in the presence of a vitamin D-deficient status would have a more negative influence on bone parameters than a normal-fat diet with such a status. In the present study, we targeted young Japanese adults aged 21-23 (n = 175).

Reduced mechanosensitivity of duodenal vagal afferent neurons after an acute switch from milk-based to plant-based diets in anaesthetized pigs.

Acute changes in diet composition and/or origin alter gastric emptying and gastrointestinal motility. One of the hypotheses explaining these alterations involves changes in the sensitivity of duodenal vagal sensory neurons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of multimodal duodenal vagal sensory neurons in 20 pigs feed either with milk-based or plant-based diets of identical caloric content. Twenty duodenal vagal afferents were recorded in anesthetized animal from the cervical vagus using the single fiber method. 10 pigs were fed with a milk-based diet (MD) for one month

Sex-Specific Sociodemographic Correlates of Dietary Patterns in a Large Sample of French Elderly Individuals.

This cross-sectional analysis provides up-to-date information about dietary patterns (DP) and their sociodemographic correlates in European elderly individuals. We studied 6686 enrollees aged 65+ (55% women) in the ongoing French population-based NutriNet-Santé e-cohort. Diet was assessed via three 24 h records. The sex-specific correlates of factor analysis derived DP were identified with multivariable linear regression. Using 22 pre-defined food groups, three DP were extracted. The "Работает" DP (fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, fish) was positively associated with education, living alone, an

Patients With Mitochondrial Disease Have an Inadequate Nutritional Intake.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial disease (MD) is a group of disorders caused by dysfunctional mitochondria, the organelles that generate energy for the cell. Malnutrition in patients with MD may lead to increased mitochondrial dysfunction, which may enhance already existing symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients with MD have an insufficient or unbalanced food intake and to establish which nutrients and product groups are particularly compromised in this patient group. METHODS: In this observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study, sixty 3-day nutrition diaries of a

Perinatal high-fat diet exposure alters oxytocin and corticotropin releasing factor inputs onto vagal neurocircuits controlling gastric motility.

Perinatal high-fat diet (pHFD) exposure alters the development of vagal neurocircuits that control gastrointestinal (GI) motility and reduce stress resiliency in offspring. Descending oxytocin (OXT; prototypical anti-stress peptide) and corticotropin releasing factor (CRF; prototypical stress peptide) inputs from the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus to the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) modulate the GI stress response. How these descending inputs, and their associated changes to GI motility and stress responses, are altered following pHFD exposure are, however, unknow

Age-and sex-specific variation in diet quality across the lifespan and its lifestyle and socio-demographic determinants in Japan.

Variations in diet quality across the lifespan remain insufficiently characterised, particularly in non-Western populations. We aimed to examine age-and sex-specific variation in diet quality and identify associated dietary components and socio-demographic and lifestyle factors in a Japanese population. In this cross-sectional study of 4455 Japanese individuals aged 1-79 years, dietary intake was assessed using 8-day weighed dietary records collected across four seasons. Diet quality was evaluated using the Healthy Eating Index-2020 (HEI-2020) and Nutrient-Rich Food Index 9·3 (NRF9·3). Associa
