[Atopic dermatitis in children and food allergy: combination or causality? Should avoidance diets be initiated?].

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the first manifestations of the atopic march. The natural history of food allergies (FA) is closely related … voidance diet can be prescribed on 3 levels: primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Diagnostic dietetics are aimed at initiating a hypoallergenic diet over a short period of 15 to 21 days when AD is severe and does not permit an allergy assessment. This diet is followed by an allergy assessment and OPT to determine the foodstuff responsible. Therapeuti …

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Pediatric IBD: How Often, Why, and What to Do?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBDs), including Crohn's disease (CD), and ulcerative colitis (UC) are complex diseases with a multifactorial etiology, associated with genetic, dietetic, and other environmental risk factors. Children with IBD are at increased risk for nutritional inadequacies, resulting from decreased oral intake, restrictive dietary patterns, malabsorption, enhanced nutrient loss, surgery, and medications. Follow-up of IBD children should routinely include evaluation of specific nutritional deficits and dietetic and/or supplementation strategies should be implemented in case defi

Dietitians Working in Continuing Care Facilities in Nova Scotia: Pre- and Post-COVID-19 First Wave.

Continuing care (CC) facilities have been impacted by a growing demand for services, insufficient resources for the provision of quality food and nutrition care, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored the roles and responsibilities of dietitians working in CC facilities in Nova Scotia (NS) before and after the COVID-19 first wave. Using ethics-approved questionnaires, the estimated 75 dietitians working in CC facilities in NS were surveyed in Fall 2019 and Fall 2020 about their roles and responsibilities. Twenty responded to the first questionnaire and 15 to the second.

Orthorexia among patients with eating disorders, student dietitians and general population: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia is a recent construct describing an unhealthy and extreme concern for healthy food. To date, its relationship with other eating disorders (EDs) remains unclear, and little is known about the development of this condition. Current literature suggests that a thorough knowledge about nutrition and alimentation, as in the case of experts in the field of dietetics, could foster the development of orthorexic tendencies. The aim of this study was to compare orthorexia between ED patients, student dietitians and general population. METHODS: A total of 90 female participants (age: …

Nutritional Considerations for Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Narrative Review.

Those with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) require important considerations with respect to food and nutrition, owing to advanced age, poor diet behaviours and immobility associated with the disease process and co-morbid state. These considerations, coupled with the economic effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy, mandate that dietetic care plays a vital role in the management of PAD. Despite this, optimising dietetic care in PAD remains poorly understood. This narrative review considers the role of medical nutrition therapy in every stage of the PAD process, ranging from the onset and i

The experiences of a therapeutic relationship between dietitians and patients in UK eating disorder treatment: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Dietitians have a central role in eating disorder (ED) treatment, however few studies exist investigating therapeutic aspects of dietetic care and factors influencing the dietitian-patient relationship. To address the gap, this study aimed to use a qualitative description approach to explore the experiences of delivering and receiving dietetic care in ED treatment in the UK. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 specialist ED dietitians and focus groups with 11 recovered ED patients. Interviews were transcribed and inductive thematic analysis was performed to ide

[Type 2 diabetes in France: epidemiology, trends of medical care, social and economic burden].

Between 2001 and 2007, treatments for type 2 diabetes have increased and therapeutic choices have improved. However glycemic control remains insufficient. Cardiovascular risk control has widely increased. Statins, hypertensive and antithrombotic treatments are more often prescribed. Blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels have decreased whatever age. However, progress remains possible, especially regarding blood pressure control. Obesity has increased between 2001 and 2007 to reach 41% whereas the frequency of dietetic visits has decreased. Insulin therapy (more than obesity) determines the

Women with phenylketonuria: successful management of pregnancy and implications.

Dietary management of five pregnancies in two women (sisters) with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) is described. One child died neonatally of congenital heart disease and one pregnancy miscarried. Of the three surviving children the only physically and mentally normal child, followed up to eight years, was born after a carefully planned pregnancy with strict dietary control preconceptually and throughout pregnancy. One pregnancy treated dietetically from six weeks gestation resulted in a child mentally normal at seven years but born with oesophageal atresia. The third surviving child is microc

[Hypolipidemic treatments].

All types of hyperlipoproteinaemia must be corrected to prevent or delay the atheroma they produce, or even bring about its regression. A dietetic regimen is prescribed first to be completed, if necessary, by a medicinal treatment. Once instituted, these treatments must be pursued indefinitely, the return to normal lipid levels being a sign of their effectiveness and not a reason for their discontinuation. Conversely, failure to obtain normal lipid levels indicates that the treatment should be modified, especially the dietetic regimen which, when not regularly adhered to, often is the cause of

Nausea and nutrition.

Nausea and vomiting are symptoms associated with a wide variety of diseases and particular life conditions, such as pregnancy. The symptoms may occur in acute form or chronically depending on the underlying pathogenesis. In some cases, nausea and vomiting are directly triggered by food, e.g. in patients suffering from food allergy or food intolerances. In other cases, food is not the primary cause but dietetic manipulations may still contribute to the management of the nausea and vomiting. Therefore, food plays an important pathophysiological and therapeutic role in nausea and vomiting. In the

[Selenium sufficiency in patients with malabsorption syndrome and its optimization with selenium enriched food supplements].

Selenium security was measured in 15 adult patients suffering from malabsorption syndrome, resulted from stomach and small intestine surgical resection consequences. In 7 of them (47%) marked deficiency of this essential trace element was revealed and in other 6 (40%)--suboptimal security. The indices of selenium security in observed patients markedly and significantly (p < 0.003) increased after a 3-week course of dietetic treatment including uptake of organic selenium enriched food supplement in amount equal to 90 mcg Se per day. This dietetic treatment had mild "physiologic" character that

Integrating Dietitians Into Primary Dental Care for Paediatric Populations: Developing a Conceptual Service Pathway Through a Professional Stakeholder Workshop.

BACKGROUND: Diet is a common risk factor influencing both oral and systemic health, yet dietary support within dental care is often limited to brief advice focused on sugar intake. Integrating dietitians into primary dental care for the paediatric population may support earlier identification of dietary concerns and provide the opportunity for dietetic care. However, no established integrated dietetic-dental service pathway for paediatric populations has been identified within primary dental care settings in the United Kingdom. OBJECTIVE: To explore how selected full-consensus agreement state
