A convenient preparation method of N-acylbenzoxazines has been developed, in which phenols react with nitriles and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the presence of a catalytic amount of (COCl)2 in CH3CN or chloroform to afford the corresponding N-acylbenzoxazines in moderate-to-good yields. DMSO acts as a source of HCHO, which is generated in situ from the decomposition of a methoxydimethylsulfonium salt. A regeneration cycle of the methoxydimethylsulfonium salt is proposed, which is initiated by a catalytic amount of (COCl)2.

In this study, we synthesized γ-phenyl-β,γ-unsaturated ketones in situ from acetophenones and phenylacetylenes under Trofimov's conditions using KOtBu in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent. The obtained ketones reacted with α,β-unsaturated carbonyls in a one-pot manner, forming tri- or diarylated benzophenones. The present reaction proceeded efficiently by one-pot manipulation with a suitable carboxylic acid.

An efficient method for the synthesis of β,β-di(hetero)aryl-α,α-difluorinated ketones using readily available organophosphonium salts and difluoroenol silyl ethers has been developed. This mild reaction features a good functional group tolerance, a scaled-up synthesis, and synthetic simplicity. By taking advantage of DMSO as a less-toxic promoter and solvent for the difluoroalkylation and C-P bond functionalization, the use of transition-metal catalysts and sensitive additives could be avoided.

The equilibrium for formation of the intramolecular hydrogen bond (KHB) in a series of substituted salicylate monoanions was investigated as a function of delta pKa, the difference between the pKa values of the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, in both water and dimethyl sulfoxide. The dependence of log KHB upon delta pKa is linear in both solvents, but is steeper in dimethyl sulfoxide (slope = 0.73) than in water (slope = 0.05). This double blind controlled study examined whether oxygen-derived free radicals interfere with the healing of venous ulceration occurring on the medial side of the leg for the first time.
