Torrance type of lethal neonatal short-limbed platyspondylic dwarfism.

A rare case of lethal neonatal short-limbed platyspondylic dwarfism is described. Roentgenographic features of this case, distinctly different from those of the classical thanatophoric dysplasia, are indistinguishable from the other three types of short-limbed platyspondylic dwarfism. Histologic features of the cartilage in this case are not very different from those of the Torrance type, but the presence of focal disruption of column formation in this case suggests a wider spectrum for this entity.

Long-limbed campomelic dwarfism. A radiologic and pathologic study.

Comparison of the roentgenographic and pathologic features of a case of classic, long-limbed campomelic dwarfism with those of previously reported cases leads to the conclusion that the bony abnormalities in this disorder are not due to an intrinsic abnormality of cartilage formation or of osteoblast or osteoclast function. Likewise, no defect in bone collagen, ground substance, or mineralization is evident. The bowing of the long bones may be the result of poorly understood muscular stresses operative in utero. Widespread defects in other organ systems are present, with considerable variation…

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. A cause of lethal neonatal dwarfism.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita is a form of primary short dwarfism, that is manifest at birth generally has not been regarded as a cause of lethal neonatal dwarfism. Seven neonates with severe dwarfism are presented. The first survived the newborn period, but the other six were early neonatal deaths. All displayed the clinical and radiologic features of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. The striking similarities between spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita and achondrogenesis type 2 are discussed.

The regulatory role of DELLA protein DkGAI1 in persimmon dwarfism.

Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) is an important fruit crop in East Asia with significant commercial potential. However, dwarfing cultivation in persimmon trees is rarely applied due to the lack of excellent dwarfing rootstocks and cultivars. 'Nantongxiaofangshi' (Diospyros kaki Linn.cv. Nantongxiaofangshi) is an excellent persimmon cultivar suitable for dwarfing cultivation due to its distinct dwarfing characteristics, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we further identified the DkGAI1 gene, which encodes a DELLA protein, as a candidate gene regulating dwarfing in '

Microcephalic primordial dwarfism in an Emirati patient with PNKP mutation.

Microcephaly is a rare neurological condition, both in isolation and when it occurs as part of a syndrome. One of the syndromic forms of mic … to consider this case as an atypical variant of MCSZ or as a novel form of microcephalic primordial dwarfism. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Phenotypic correction of dwarfism by constitutive expression of growth hormone.

GH is normally secreted in a pulsatile fashion. When GH is deficient, dwarfism is the result in both rodents and humans. An adenoviral vector containing the rat GH complementary DNA was used to induce constitutive GH expression in hepatocytes of GH-deficient lit/lit mice. Elevated serum GH increased circulating insulin-like growth factor I concentrations, corrected the growth deficiency, and normalized body composition. The results indicate that correction of the dwarf phenotype can be achieved by constitutive expression of GH at an ectopic site by gene transfer.

A case of lethal congenital dwarfism with accelerated skeletal maturation.

Details of a female infant, who was born after 29 weeks gestation and who died within minutes of birth, are presented. The infant was hydropic, showed macroglossia and had very short limbs with normal sized hands and feet. Apart from a preductal aortic coarctation the pathological findings were confined to the skeleton. The radiographical and histological findings are described in detail; they differ from those of previous studies of similar conditions.

Histopathological features of the skin in hypopituitarism and Laron-type dwarfism.

Skin biopsies from children and adolescents with various syndromes of somatomedin deficiency revealed changes in structure and in distribution of the dermal elastin fibers as compared with a group of seven healthy control subjects. In 18 patients with isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) and in 11 with multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies (MPHD), the number of elastin fibers was reduced; the individual fibers were shorter and slimmer than usual, and frequently arranged in groups dispersed in various directions. Skin biopsies from six patients with Laron-type dwarfism (LTD) revealed mos…

Short-limbed dwarfism and ocular defects in the Samoyed dog.

A syndrome of short-limbed dwarfism and ocular defects was found in Samoyed dogs. The most prominent abnormalities were small stature and valgus deformity of the carpi. Radiographic evidence of retarded growth at the distal ulnar physis was apparent by 12 weeks of age. Ocular defects included cataracts and retinal detachment. Family studies and limited breeding experiments were consistent with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance.

A rare type of low birthweight dwarfism: the Dubowitz syndrome.

Two patients with the Dubowitz syndrome are presented. This presumably recessive inherited syndrome was first defined by Grosse et al. (1971). So far 11 patients with this syndrome have been described. Major clinical findings are intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, considerable microcephaly, mild mental retardation, hyperactivity, hyperextensibility of joints, eczema and a characteristic appearance of the face due to marked epicanthic folds, blepharophimosis, broadening of the bridge and tip of the nose and retrognathia. Minor anomalies as clinodactylyl of the firth digits, cutaneou
