A gender synchronized family planning intervention for married couples in rural India: study protocol for the CHARM2 cluster randomized controlled trial evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Prior research from India demonstrates a need for family planning counseling that engages both women and men, offers complete family planning method mix, and focuses on gender equity and reduces marital sexual violence (MSV) to promote modern contraceptive use. Effectiveness of the three-session (two male-only sessions and one couple session) Counseling Husbands to Achieve Reproductive Health and Marital Equity (CHARM) intervention, which used male health providers to engage and counsel husbands on gender equity and family planning (GE + FP), was demonstrated by increased pill and

A multimodal approach to investigate biomarkers for psychosis in a clinical setting: the integrative neuroimaging studies in schizophrenia targeting for early intervention and prevention (IN-STEP) project.

Longitudinal clinical investigations and biological measurements have determined not only progressive brain volumetric and functional changes especially around the onset of psychosis but also the abnormality of developmental pathways based on gene-environment interaction model. However, these studies have contributed little to clinical decisions on their diagnosis and therapeutic choices because of subtle differences between patients and healthy controls. A multi-modal approach may resolve this limitation and is favorable to explore the pathophysiology of psychosis. The integrative neuroimagin

Role of the family physician in the care of children with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality, occurring in one in 691 live births in the United States each year. Prenatally, the sequential contingent test for aneuploidy screening is highly sensitive for Down syndrome and has a low false-positive rate. The diagnosis should be confirmed with fluorescent in situ hybridization followed by chromosomal karyotyping at birth. Children with Down syndrome have varied degrees of intellectual disability and more health complications than other children. However, advancements in recent decades have led to improved life expectancy, satisfacti

Response to instruction, English language learners and disproportionate representation: the role of assessment.

Response to Intervention (RtI), a cyclical process that incorporates assessment and instruction, is both an approach to prevent learning difficulties and to establish student eligibility for special education. Assessment results are used to determine students' initial knowledge and skill, their need for successively more intensive levels of instruction, and to gauge their response to the intervention provided. Although this process is preferable to the IQ/achievement discrepancy model for determining the presence of specific learning disabilities, there are still a number of unresolved issues

Phoneme manipulation not onset-rime manipulation ability is a unique predictor of early reading.

BACKGROUND: Phonological awareness is known to be an excellent predictor of later reading acquisition. It remains unclear, however, whether phoneme manipulation alone best explains this association or whether an additional direct contribution of onset-rime awareness is predictive. This issue is explored here. METHOD: A longitudinal study is reported predicting national test and teacher-assessed performance of 351 children aged 7 from phonological awareness measures, pupil baseline attainment and background measures at age 5. RESULTS: Explicit phoneme manipulation skills at age 5 correlated m

Single centre implementation of the Paediatric Anaesthesia Emergence Delirium scale.

PURPOSE: Early recognition of paediatric emergence delirium (ED) by post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses is critical for the effective management and prevention of complications. This project aimed to enhance nursing education and standardise the use of the Paediatric Anaesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale as a reliable tool for assessing ED. DESIGN: This project involved an educational intervention for PACU nurses to train them in using the PAED scale for ED evaluation. The effectiveness of the PAED scale was compared with the more commonly used Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolabil

Clinically Significant Outcomes of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis.

Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) is widely recommended for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, the treatment intensity and effectiveness have been debated. We conducted a meta-analysis and examined individual participant data to evaluate the effectiveness and clinical significance of the outcomes on adaptive behavior, intellectual functioning, and autism severity. We included studies of children with ASD aged 2-6 years who received EIBI for at least 12 months. The final literature search was conducted on September 26, 2024. The GRADE tool was used to assess the

Harnessing routinely collected data for the evaluation of early years interventions: insights from a scoping review of evaluation studies.

INTRODUCTION: Routinely collected data (RCD) describes data about individuals that is documented routinely in practice. Evaluation of early years interventions is imperative for improving child health and development, and utilisation of RCD for research could overcome limitations with traditional study designs, such as participant burden, attrition and disappointment bias. A systematic understanding of if (and how) RCD is being used to evaluate early years interventions is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To scope the literature on how RCD is being used to evaluate the effectiveness of early years interv

Evaluating evidence-based practice in light of the boundedness and proximity of outcomes: Capturing the scope of change.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) reviews abound in early childhood autism intervention research. These reviews seek to describe and evaluate the evidence supporting the use of specific educational and clinical practices, but give little attention to evaluating intervention outcomes in terms of the extent to which they reflect change that extends beyond the exact targets and contexts of intervention. We urge consideration of these outcome characteristics, which we refer to as "proximity" and "boundedness," as key criteria in evaluating and describing the scope of change effected by EBPs, and provi

Modality and redundancy effects, and their relation to executive functioning in children with dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia are often provided with audio-support to compensate for their reading problems, but this may intervene with their learning. The aim of the study was to examine modality and redundancy effects in 21 children with dyslexia, compared to 21 typically developing peers (5th grade), on study outcome (retention and transfer knowledge) and study time in user-paced learning environments and the role of their executive functions (verbal and visual working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility) on these effects. Results showed no effects on retention knowledge. Regarding tra

Experience of Engagement in a Somatosensory Discrimination Intervention for Children with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy: A Qualitative Investigation.

Background: To successfully modify an intervention from an adult population for use with children with cerebral palsy, it is important to understand the components that support a child's motivation and engagement. Method: Ten children who had participated in the Sense© intervention (mean age = 11 years 2 m [SD = 2 years]; four males; Manual Ability Classification System level I = 1, II = 9) and their primary caregivers (N = 11, 10 females) were interviewed. Transcripts were analyzed using framework analysis. Results: Key themes were identified in the core domains of the Synthesis of Child, Occ

The tonic response to the infant knee jerk as an early sign of cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of infants at risk of cerebral palsy (CP) is desirable in order to provide early intervention. We previously demonstrated differences in knee jerk responses between 3-month-old high risk and typically developing infants. AIMS: To improve early identification by investigating whether the presence of tonic responses (continuous muscle activity occurring after the typical phasic response), clonus or contralateral responses to the knee jerk during infancy is associated with CP. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal EMG-study. SUBJECTS: We included 34 high-risk infants (med

[Autism spectrum disorder: Etiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects].

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was described for the first time in 1943 by Leo Kanner, and since 2004, 18 490 articles in the subject have been published, which in turn have been cited 48 416 times.1 Almost half of these publications come from the United States of America and the vast maority of the efforts to improve the quality of life of these patients have taken place in developed countries. This disorder consists of an inability to acquire social and emotional skills during early development that progressively results in variable degrees of social adaptation discapacity. The etiology is m

Small groups, big gains: efficacy of a tier 2 phonological awareness intervention with preschoolers with early literacy deficits.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a phonological awareness (PA) intervention, designed for Tier 2 instruction in a Response to Intervention (RTI) model, delivered to small groups of preschoolers. METHOD: A multiple-baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention on low-income preschool children's PA skills. A trained interventionist delivered small group sessions 3 to 4 days a week and ensured children received frequent opportunities to respond and contingent feedback. Participants received 28 to 36 lessons that

Indexing response to intervention: a longitudinal study of reading risk from kindergarten through third grade.

In this study, response to intervention and stability of reading performance of 41 kindergarten children identified as at risk of reading difficulty were evaluated from kindergarten through third grade. All students were assessed in the fall of each academic year to evaluate need for intervention, and students who fell below the 30th percentile on criterion measures received small-group supplemental intervention. Measures included a combination of commercial normative referenced measures and specific skill and construct measures to assess growth or change in reading risk status relative to 30t

Telehealth adaptation of the Lidcombe Program of Early Stuttering Intervention: five case studies.

This article describes and reports data-based outcomes of a low-tech telehealth adaptation of the Lidcombe Program of Early Stuttering Intervention. Participants were 5 children with early stuttering, ranging in age from 3;5 (years;months) to 5;7, and their families. All children met the speech criteria for completion of Stage 1 of the Lidcombe Program. Data suggested that the treatment method may be viable and that favorable outcomes may be achievable. Mean posttreatment stuttering rates in everyday speaking situations were available 12 months posttreatment for 4 children. Two children scored

Note on ambient noise levels in head start speech-language therapy rooms.

Only one speech-language therapy room of ten at preschool Head Start centers met the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) requirements for ambient noise levels in educational settings. Preschoolers with speech-language disorders need ideal circumstances for therapy, which may be achieved through environmental changes or assistive listening devices.

PREVENIR: An Oral Language Intervention for Preventing Reading Difficulties in Kindergarten Children-A Preliminary Effectiveness Study.

PURPOSE: Preschool years are critical for oral language development, which has long-term implications for academic and social success. However, evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of classwide interventions that promote preliteracy skills before the onset of formal reading instruction-particularly in languages other than English-remains limited. This preliminary effectiveness study examined whether an oral language intervention, called PREVENIR, led to measurable gains in Catalan kindergarten children's language skills and helped prevent future reading difficulties compared with busi

Policy brief: reforming outcomes measurement for deaf children in early intervention.

This policy brief examines critical flaws in the Child Outcomes Summary Form (COSF), the primary tool used to assess developmental progress in early intervention (EI) systems, and highlights its discriminatory impact on deaf children. The COSF is built on an audist framework that systematically excludes signed language competence as a valid developmental indicator and fails to account for the diverse developmental trajectories of deaf infants and young children. This foundational bias is particularly harmful for deaf children identified through newborn hearing screening, who often enter Birth

Challenges and opportunities for early childhood intervention services in Singapore: addressing user satisfaction.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a gap between primary stakeholders' ex ante expectations of adaptive early childhood intervention (ECI) services and their actual experiences with these services. This is despite governments' and service operators' swift pivot from on-site service delivery to home-based, virtual and hybrid modes, and cross-sector collaboration with private providers and pre-schools. In this article, we share our preliminary evidence from in-depth interviews with parents and clinicians regarding the perceived challenges to post-pandemic ECI services. We discuss how th
