Witkop's syndrome is one of the milder forms of the 117 known variants of ectodermal dysplasia. Nonsense mutation in the MSX1 gene causes the characteristic features of hypodontia, morphological alterations in teeth and dysgenesis of nails. The presenting features of Witkop's syndrome differ from the classic ED by showing no involvement of sweat glands or hair. Due to its milder presentation, diagnosis is more likely to be missed, leading to unwarranted functional, aesthetic and psychological dysregulation in patients. Dentists play an important role in early diagnosis and management of Witkop

We report a case of a patient with genetic sequencing-confirmed X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia without the typical characteristic hair growth abnormalities with the disorder. While this patient had already received guidance from a genetic counselor about his condition, many cases of ectodermal dysplasia go underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to mild or atypical presentations. With gene therapies emerging, the authors hope to highlight the importance of recognizing the disorder in patients who have not yet received a diagnosis to better manage their clinical course and guide future l

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal diagnosis of the Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome has been based upon the detection of ectrodactyly, in association with facial clefting and/or positive family history. Our aim is to describe other ultrasonographic features indicating the presuntive diagnosis, regardless of genetic diagnosis, especially in cases of negative family history.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case report and a review of the literature was assessed.
RESULTS: Our case report showed a singleton foetus "lobster claw" deformities of hands and feet. Paternal history revealed bilate

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is an X-linked recessive disorder, characterised by abnormally developed ectodermal tissues (sweat glands, enamel, hair, nails). HED is caused by mutations of the EDA1 gene (Xq13.1) which codes for ectodysplasin A, a transmembrane signalling protein, which plays a significant role in ectodermal differentiation. Here we present a case of prenatal testing for HED.
METHODS: An 11-month-old boy with no family history was clinically diagnosed with HED. Genomic DNA was isolated from the patient's white blood cells, and the possible existence of

Hereditary Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (HHED), an X-linked, recessive, Mendelian character, is seen usually in males and it is inherited through female carriers. It is characterised by congenital dysplasia of one or more ectodermal structures and it is manifested by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. It results from abnormal morphogenesis of cutaneous and oral embryonic ectoderm. Here, we are presenting a rare case of HHED in a 19 year female with classic features of this condition.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder associated with abnormal development of embryonic ectodermally-derived organs including teeth, nails, hair and sweat glands. Hypodontia of the primary and permanent dentition is the most com-mon oral finding. Therefore, affected patients need dental prosthetic treatments during their developmental years. This re-port presents two cases of children affected by ectodermal dysplasia with anodontia. Oral rehabilitation was accomplished with removable acrylic prostheses. Treatment had major impacts on self-esteem, masticatory function, speech and facial

This case report describes a method of restoring function and aesthetics in a 9-year-old girl with ectodermal dysplasia with 15 years follow-up. Ectodermal dysplasia is both physically and emotionally devastating to patients. It is important that they are treated at an early age to help their social interaction. With proper dental intervention, the quality of life can be improved for patients with ectodermal dysplasia.

The objective of the study was to catalog hair shaft abnormalities in individuals with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) syndromes using light microscopy and to compare findings with those in unaffected controls. Light microscopy was performed in a nonblinded manner on hair shafts from 65 participants with seven types of ED (hypohidrotic ED, ED-ectrodactyly-cleft lip or palate, ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip and palate, Clouston syndrome, Goltz syndrome, Schopf-Schulz Passarge syndrome, and oculodentodigital dysplasia) and 41 unaffected controls. Hair donations were collected at the 28th

We describe a family with a novel, inherited AXIN2 mutation (c.1989G>A) segregating in an autosomal dominant pattern with oligodontia and variable other findings including colonic polyposis, gastric polyps, a mild ectodermal dysplasia phenotype with sparse hair and eyebrows, and early onset colorectal and breast cancers. This novel mutation predicts p.Trp663X, which is a truncated protein that is missing the last three exons, including the DIX (Disheveled and AXIN interacting) domain. This nonsense mutation is predicted to destroy the inhibitory action of AXIN2 on WNT signaling. Previous autho

Hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by hypohidrosis/anhidrosis, hypotrichosis, dysodontia and heat intolerance. Most common mode of transmission is X-linked recessive, showing complete expression in males, and only partial manifestations in the female carrier heterozygotes. Features like atrophic rhinitis, nasal and aural myiasis, syndactyly, cleft lip and/or palate, mental retardation and immunodeficiency are uncommonly seen in this syndrome. We hereby report a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with unusual features of atrophic rhini

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial and upper airway structures in patients with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Craniofacial and upper airway dimensions were measured on lateral cephalometric radiographs of ten HED patients (four females and six males) and ten normal class III patients as a control group. 21 dimensional measurements were used for cephalometric assessment. Craniofacial structures were compared with normal values and airway dimensions were compared with those of a control group with a similar skeletal pattern.

EEM syndrome is a rare condition characterised by ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly and macular dystrophy. Additional abnormalities such as alopecia, cataract, absent eyebrows, and oligodontia may occur. We report two brothers and a sister born to consanguineous parents with EEM syndrome. EEM syndrome differs from other ectrodactly syndromes by the characteristic findings in the ocular fundus showing extensive retinochoroidal atrophy with diffuse retinal pigmentation and mild arteriolar attenuation at the posterior pole. In contrast to other ectrodactyly syndromes autosomal recessive inherita

The ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, cleft lip/palate syndrome (EEC syndrome) is an autosomal dominant dysplasia syndrome, whose pleiotropic effects involve mainly ectodermal structures. The most common clinical manifestations are ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly , cleft lip/palate, and tear-duct anomalies. Very rarely the ectrodactyly may be absent, and skeletal abnormalities may be subtle. We present a 44-month-old girl who had features of EEC syndrome but without the classic ectrodactyly.

BACKGROUND: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a severe developmental disorder in which nonallelic genetic heterogeneity has been demonstrated. Even though X-linked and autosomal recessive forms are phenotypically similar, identification of the way of transmission is mandatory to give reliable genetic counseling to the family and to address molecular studies. Complete examination of relatives of patients with HED and identification of carriers of partial forms of the disorder in their families is the key to clarifying intrafamilial genetic transmission.
OBSERVATIONS: Seven patients di

We describe five sporadic cases of the EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft lip). There are only a few reports of the syndrome being inherited in Japan. Two of the five patients had genitourinary anomalies and one mental retardation. Four of the five patients had clefts in the primary and secondary palate. All had deformities of the hands, polydactyly, syndactyly, and camptodactyly. Syndactyly could be a component of the syndrome.

The ectodermal dysplasias are a heterogeneous group of conditions primarily affecting the hair, teeth, nails, and skin, and are classified according to the tissue(s) affected. The classification categories are: (1) abnormalities of hair, (2) dental defects, (3) abnormalities of nail morphology, and (4) dyshidrosis. Individuals are grouped according to defects present with findings from two or more categories required for diagnosis. As this classification method is based on phenotype, variable expression or small family size may well have an impact on diagnosis. We report a four-generation fami

Ectodermal dysplasia with arthrogryposis is an uncommon condition. We describe two daughters of a distant consanguineous couple with oligodentia, enamel abnormalities, camptodactyly, longitudinally broken nails, growth retardation, joint contractures with amyotrophy, hypohidrotic skin with tendency to excessive bruising and scarring after injuries and scratching, kypho-scoliosis, mild facial dysmorphia and microcephaly. The condition is probably due to an autosomal recessive gene, the parents being gypsies of the same ancestral origin.
