Beyond the clicker: rethinking student response systems as pedagogical infrastructure for healthcare professions education.

Large-group lectures (150 students and upwards) remain a central component of healthcare professions education despite longstanding concerns about passivity, limited interaction, and difficulties in providing formative feedback at scale. These concerns have acquired renewed relevance as educators face digitally connected student cohorts, ubiquitous smartphones, and growing concerns about digital distraction. Student response systems (SRS), initially introduced through dedicated "clickers" and now commonly accessed through students' own digital devices, offer one approach to transforming the la

Video otoscopy: bringing otoscopy out of the "black box".

BACKGROUND: Several billion dollars are spent each year on otitis media, a diagnosis for which educational approaches and diagnostic skills are suboptimal. The Center for Disease Control has identified improvement in otoscopy skills as a key intervention to curb inappropriate antibiotic usage. Educators are looking for interventions to both improve and assess otoscopy skills. Video otoscopy (VO) uses endoscopic technology to project the image of the ear onto a monitor for all to see, offering unexplored educational opportunity. The objective of this study is to perform an evaluation of VO syst

Next generation open access visualization of neuroanatomy through 3D modeling and 3D printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has transformed anatomy education by enabling students to visualize complex spatial relationships through interactive tactile learning. This technology is particularly valuable for neuroanatomy education, widely regarded as one of the most spatially challenging subjects in health professions curricula where form-function relationships are far less intuitive than other systems. Traditionally, neuroanatomy education has relied on intact donor brains for dissection and commercial neuroanatomical models. However, many institutions lack access to body dono

Identification of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Self-Management Structured Education Programs for People with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Mixed Methodology Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The use and innovation of continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMs) offer a wealth of information regarding glycemic variability on a day-to-day basis, providing the opportunity to assess the broader picture of glycemic control compared with the static data from Blood Glucose Monitors. Diabetes self-management structured education (DSMSE) is the cornerstone of successful diabetes management. Educational programs on CGMs self-management, structured following National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, have shown remarkable outcomes in glycemic management,

Immersive virtual reality in second-level education: a partnered narrative on the challenges and opportunities for STEM engagement.

Digital education in the life sciences has seen several remarkable advances in recent years, not least with the advent of visual and immersive technologies that bring into focus the conceptually challenging abstract concepts that underpin molecular biology and the life sciences. In some cases, limitations in visualizing and modelling these concepts can prove to be a barrier to learning. Providing new entry points to learning through 'doing' or 'seeing' could prove to be a significant enhancer of engagement, unlocking hidden potential in our student cohorts and increasing the uptake of science

Diabetes Technology in the School Setting for Preschool-Aged Children.

Diabetes technology has transformed the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and improved glycemic outcomes, yet preschool-aged children with T1D remain a uniquely vulnerable population. Complete dependence on caregivers and practical considerations such as limited body surface area and skin sensitivity create distinct barriers to effective technology use. These challenges are often compounded by the transition to daycare or school setting, where disruption in diabetes care coordination between home and classroom can compromise glycemic outcomes. This review synthesizes the evidence for diabete

Branching-scenario games in acute end-of-life care education: cultural adaptation and health equity from a public health implementation perspective.

The quality and accessibility of end-of-life (EOL) care are sensitive indicators of health equity, yet these services remain profoundly unequal worldwide. The challenge is especially acute in emergency and critical care, where clinicians must reconcile time-pressured medical decisions with emotionally charged communication. Branching-scenario games, serious games built on clinical decision trees, have emerged as a promising educational tool for rehearsing such competencies in a safe, repeatable virtual environment. However, their effectiveness is not a matter of simple technology transfer: it

Lay health-worker delivered and technology-based interventions for sexual and reproductive health among adolescents and young adults in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at high risk of harmful sexual and reproductive health (SRH) practices. Preventive and educational interventions by lay health workers or through technological means are a cost-effective and scalable solution. Unfortunately, to date, there is too little synthesised evidence on available lay health-worker delivered or technology-based interventions, their target populations and content, their implementation and effect on different SRH outcomes as well as facilitators and barriers to intervention effe

Self-defense or undermining the self? Exploring the possibilities and limitations of a novel anti-rape technology.

This study presents a case of a canine thymolipoma, which is a rare, slow-growing, benign tumor of the thymus composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. A 9-year-old spayed, female miniature pinscher presented with chronic cough and dyspnoea. Radiology revealed pleural effusion and a mediastinal mass with a fatty appearance. The mass was attached to, and silhouetted, the adjacent pericardium. Microscopically, the mass was composed of adipose tissue with numerous cords and nests of thymic tissue without corticomedullary arrangement. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first descrip

Telementoring: the surgical tool of the future.

With decreased resident experience during training and the constant evolution of new surgical techniques, surgeons are at risk for complications during the early part of the learning curve. Mentorship by experienced surgeons may mitigate these complications. The availability of such advanced telepresence technology makes it logical that this will be used as part of the model to proctor, mentor, and train practicing surgeons. Here, we review the current state of telementoring.

The development of effective behaviour change interventions to support the use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests by Tanzanian clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Parasitological confirmation is now recommended for all cases of suspected malaria. The roll-out of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) is hoped to enable this goal in low resource settings through point of care testing. However, simply making RDTs available has not led to high uptake of the tests or adherence to results by clinicians, with malaria continuing to be overdiagnosed in many settings. We undertook to design an evidence-based intervention package that would be sufficient to support the introduction of RDTs at dispensaries in Tanzania, to be evaluated through the Targeting Arte

A global overview of anatomical science education and its present and future role in biomedical curricula.

The four main anatomical sciences, gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, and embryology, are fundamental subjects for most health professionals and biomedical students. Usually taught as part of preclinical basic science training, the anatomical sciences provide a structural understanding of human or animal bodies at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. This overview characterizes how the anatomical sciences are currently taught around the globe, highlighting similarities, differences, and recent curricular transformations that were partially in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
