Transcranial electrical stimulation for procedural learning and rehabilitation.

Procedural learning is the acquisition of motor and non-motor skills through a gradual process that increases with practice. Impairments in procedural learning have been consistently demonstrated in neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Considering that noninvasive brain stimulation modulates brain activity and boosts neuroplastic mechanisms, we reviewed the effects of coupling transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with training methods for motor and non-motor procedural learning to explore tDCS potential use as a tool for enhancing implicit learning i

Devices for the electrical stimulation of the olfactory system: A review.

The loss of olfactory function has a profound impact on quality of life, affecting not only sensory perception but also memory, emotion, and overall well-being. Despite this, advancements in olfactory prostheses have lagged significantly behind those made for vision and hearing restoration. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the current state of devices for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system. We begin by providing an overview of the olfactory system's structure and function, emphasizing the neural pathways involved in smell perception. Following this, we explore the key

Accelerated Bone Healing via Electrical Stimulation.

Piezoelectric effect produces an electrical signal when stress is applied to the bone. When the integrity of the bone is destroyed, the biopotential within the defect site is reduced and several physiological responses are initiated to facilitate healing. During the healing of the bone defect, the bioelectric potential returns to normal levels. Treatment of fractures that exceed innate regenerative capacity or exhibit delayed healing requires surgical intervention for bone reconstruction. For bone defects that cannot heal on their own, exogenous electric fields are used to assist in treatment.

Ultrasound-Compatible Electrode for Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a vital method in neurorehabilitation used to reanimate paralyzed muscles, enhance the size and strength of atrophied muscles, and reduce spasticity. FES often leads to increased muscle fatigue, necessitating careful monitoring of the patient's response. Ultrasound (US) imaging has been utilized to provide valuable insights into FES-induced fatigue by assessing changes in muscle thickness, stiffness, and strain. Current commercial FES electrodes lack sufficient US transparency, hindering the observation of muscle activity beneath the skin where the el

Correlations between EEG and intestinal electrical stimulation.

Many diseases affect the autonomous nervous system and the central nervous system simultaneously, for example Parkinson's disease or irritable bowel syndrome. To study neurophysiologic interactions between the intestinal electrical activity and the electroencephalography (EEG) pattern of the brain, we combined intestinal electrical stimulation (IES) and non-invasive telemetric full-band DC EEG recordings in an acute pig-model. Intestinal motility was monitored with accelerometers. Brain activity was analyzed with regard to network driven phenomena like phase amplitude coupling (PAC) within two

Modeling implanted metals in electrical stimulation applications.

Objective. Metal implants impact the dosimetry assessment in electrical stimulation techniques. Therefore, they need to be included in numerical models. While currents in the body are ionic, metals only allow electron transport. In fact, charge transfer between tissues and metals requires electric fields to drive electrochemical reactions at the interface. Thus, metal implants may act as insulators or as conductors depending on the scenario. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical argument that guides the choice of the correct representation of metal implants in electrical models whi

Electrical stimulation of the fornix for the treatment of brain diseases.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has proven to be safe and effective for both hypo- and hyperkinetic movement disorders of basal ganglia origin, while its application to other neural pathways such as the circuit of Papez is under investigation. In particular, the fornix has gained interest as potential DBS target to decrease rates of cognitive decline, enhance memory, aid visuospatial memorization, and improve verbal recollection. While the exact mechanisms of action of fornix DBS are not completely understood, studies found enhanced hippocampal acetylcholine release, synaptic plasticity, and decr

Electrical Brain Stimulation for Epilepsy and Emerging Applications.

Electrical brain stimulation is an established therapy for movement disorders, epilepsy, obsessive compulsive disorder, and a potential therapy for many other neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Despite significant progress and FDA approvals, there remain significant clinical gaps that can be addressed with next generation systems. Integrating wearable sensors and implantable brain devices with off-the-body computing resources (smart phones and cloud resources) opens a new vista for dense behavioral and physiological signal tracking coupled with adaptive stimulation therapy that should have

Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Facial Pain.

Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) is a novel, minimally invasive and useful treatment modality. Its use in complex facial pain has been on the rise, and its utility will further increase with the advances in the technology and renewed interest in the field of peripheral neuromodulation. PENS therapy can be used both as diagnostic and therapeutic option. The precise mechanism of action is not known, although a combination of electrical neuromodulation and release of endogenous morphine-like substance in the central nervous system appears as plausible explanation. We analyse the v

Electrical Vestibular Stimulation in Humans: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: In patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, the regular treatment options, such as medication, surgery, and/or vestibular rehabilitation, do not always suffice. Therefore, the focus in this field of vestibular research shifted to electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) and the development of a system capable of artificially restoring the vestibular function. Key Message: Currently, three approaches are being investigated: vestibular co-stimulation with a cochlear implant (CI), EVS with a vestibular implant (VI), and galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). All three applications show

Transcranial Electrical Brain Stimulation in Alert Rodents.

Transcranial electrical brain stimulation can modulate cortical excitability and plasticity in humans and rodents. The most common form of stimulation in humans is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Less frequently, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) or transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), a specific form of tACS using an electrical current applied randomly within a pre-defined frequency range, is used. The increase of noninvasive electrical brain stimulation research in humans, both for experimental and clinical purposes, has yielded an increased need fo

Modulation of auditory percepts by transcutaneous electrical stimulation.

Transcutaneous, electrical stimulation with electrodes placed on the mastoid processes represents a specific way to elicit vestibular reflexes in humans without active or passive subject movements, for which the term galvanic vestibular stimulation was coined. It has been suggested that galvanic vestibular stimulation mainly affects the vestibular periphery, but whether vestibular hair cells, vestibular afferents, or a combination of both are excited, is still a matter of debate. Galvanic vestibular stimulation has been in use since the late 18th century, but despite the long-known and well-do

Functional electrical stimulation and spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) can disrupt communications between the brain and the body, resulting in loss of control over otherwise intact neuromuscular systems. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the central and peripheral nervous system can use these intact neuromuscular systems to provide therapeutic exercise options to allow functional restoration and to manage medical complications following SCI. The use of FES for the restoration of muscular and organ functions may significantly decrease the morbidity and mortality following SCI. Many FES devices are commercially available and shou
