Hypospadias is among the most prevalent urogenital malformations in male newborns. It is characterized by the displacement of the urethral meatus to the ventral side of the penis, an aberrant ventral curve of the penis referred to as "chordee," and an abnormally arranged foreskin with a "hood" found dorsally and lacking foreskin ventrally. Patients may have an extra genitourinary abnormality based on the area of the lesion. In around 70% of cases, the urethral meatus is positioned distally to the shaft, representing a milder form of the disease. The remaining 30% of cases are located proximall

Esophageal atresia (OA) represents one of the commonest and most severe developmental disorders of the foregut, the most proximal segment of … facilitate optimal function. This chapter outlines the most current understanding of the molecular embryology underlying foregut development and OA, and also explores the promise of regenerative medicine.

UNLABELLED: Imaging of the blunt traumatic injuries to the craniocervical junction can be challenging but central to improving morbidity and mortality related to such injury. The radiologist has a significant part to play in the appropriate management of patients who have suffered injury to this vital junction between the cranium and the spine. Knowledge of the embryology and normal anatomy as well as normal variant appearances avoids inappropriate investigations in these trauma patients. Osseous injury can be subtle while representing important radiological red flags for significant underlyin…

Congenital cystic masses of the neck are uncommon and can present in any age group. Diagnosis of these lesions can be sometimes challenging. Many of these have characteristic locations and imaging findings. The most common of all congenital cystic neck masses is the thyroglossal duct cyst. The other congenital cystic neck masses are branchial cleft cyst, cystic hygroma (lymphangioma), cervical thymic and bronchogenic cysts, and the floor of the mouth lesions including dermoid and epidermoid cysts. In this review, we illustrate the common congenital cystic neck masses including embryology, clin…

This review covers the most important female congenital pelvic malformations. The first part focuses on the embryological development of the urogenital and anorectal apparatus, morphological features, and the diagnostic and surgical approach to abnormalities. Comprehension of the embryological development of the urogenital and anorectal apparatus is essential to understand the morphology of congenital pelvic abnormalities and their surgical treatment. Congenital pelvic malformations are characterized by specific common features; the severity of which often subverts the pelvic morphology comple

Obturator hernia is the protrusion of intraperitoneal or extraperitoneal organs or tissues through the obturator canal. The first case was published by de Ronsil in 1724. Obturator hernia is more common in older malnourished women due to loss of supporting connective tissue and the wider female pelvis. The hernia sac usually contains small bowel, especially ileum. It may follow the anterior or posterior division of the obturator nerve. In most cases, obturator hernia presents with intestinal obstruction of unknown cause. It may present with obturator neuralgia, as a palpable mass or, in cases

The brain vascular system develops in such a way that it continuously adapts the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the needs of the parenchyma. To accompany the developing brain vesicles, it evolves in several steps: superficial meningeal network first; intraventricular choroid plexuses which determine the arterial pattern; penetrating capillaries from the surface to the ventricular germinal matrix forming simple transcerebral arteriovenous loops; cortical capillaries last, mainly in the last trimester. The venous return becomes connected to both the surface and to the choroidal veins, s

A case of a duplicated inferior vena cava (IVC) along with other anatomical vessel variations in a 72-year-old male cadaver is presented. The anomalous vessels involved, besides the IVC, were the left testicular vein and artery, the left suprarenal artery and a superior accessory left renal artery. Based on the gross appearance of the preaortic anastomotic trunk between the left and right IVC as well as on the underlying embryological features, a classification is proposed: incomplete bilateral duplication of the IVC and complete bilateral duplication of the IVC. The latter can be further divi

OBJECTIVES: The main reasons of this review are: To determine some of the embryological and genetic mechanisms of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and associated congenital reflux nephropathy (NR); recognize different patterns of familiar clustering and identify appropriate cases where genetic counselling and investigations might be indicated; and finally, to establish the association of these phenomena (VUR and NR).
METHODS: Bibliographic search of related articles until June 2007.
RESULTS: There are two kinds of primary VUR: isolated VUR and syndromic VUR; the last one has an inherited Mendelia

The urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is characterized by severe abnormalities of the urorectal septum (URS) and urogenital org … rs including abnormal bladder and dysplastic kidneys. Our findings give additional insight into the embryology of urorectogenital development. Specifically, they suggest that the cystic mass may have been a persistent urachus prior to septation of the cloaca. Postnatal evaluation confirmed a URSMS diagnosis; the newborn had ambiguous genitalia, hypoplastic k …

An understanding of the embryology of the adrenal glands is necessary to appreciate the location of adrenal ectopic, or rest, tissue which can occur anywhere along the course of gonadal descent. This tissue usually has no clinical significance, but may become hyperplastic in patients with primary or secondary adrenal pathology. In congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperplastic rest tissue may present as a soft-tissue mass, particularly in the gonads and retroperitoneum, and may be mistaken for tumour. The adrenal in the neonate is proportionately much larger than in the adult; in renal ectopy or…

The embryology and onset time of gastroschisis are poorly understood. This paper reviews 22 cases of the condition seen at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario between 1975 and 1986. Sixteen cases were judged to be of the perinatal and 6 of the early type. Ultrasonography revealed the actual time of development in one case and the probable time in another. In 20 cases the defect was closed primarily and in 2 by a staged procedure (Silon pouch). Nineteen infants (86.4%) survived. In all cases the umbilical vasculature was normal and all were right-sided. Other anomalies were rare and less…
