Neuromyasthenia (benign myalgic encephalomyelitis) is a term used to describe a protracted and incomplete recovery phase following viral-like illnesses. There are few significant physical findings or abnormal laboratory determinations. Although depressive symptoms have been observed in individuals with neuromyasthenia, systematic psychological investigations based on a standardized interview technique have not been reported. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and psychiatric symptoms in a group of patients presenting with neuromyasthenia. The study c…

Japanese encephalitis and postmeasles encephalomyelitis represent two important forms of acute encephalitis in the developing world. Japanese encephalitis accounts for 20,000 acute illnesses per year, and measles encephalomyelitis accounts for as many as 100,000. Both are accompanied by mortalities of 20%-30%, and in both forms, approximately one-half of the survivors have neurological sequelae. Therefore, these two diseases are responsible for a considerable proportion of worldwide mental and motor disabilities. Furthermore, both diseases are preventable with use of safe vaccines. Despite the…

An electronmicroscopic study of a suspension of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus by freeze-drying and freeze-etching methods showed that glycoprotein peplomers are located on the surface of the lipoprotein shell. These peplomers are organized with trimer clustering in a T = 4 icosahedral surface lattice. The mode of glycoprotein clustering for the two clones of VEE are different.

The possible role of antibodies to galactocerebroside was investigated in AS rats with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by guinea-pig spinal cord. Passive immunization with rat or rabbit antiserum to galactocerebroside did not protect rats from EAE. Active immunization with galactocerebroside before the encephalitogenic challenge produced antibody to galactocerebroside but also failed to protect rats from EAE. These experiments did not support previous suggestions that antibodies to galactocerebroside are protective.

1. The two strains of virus named GD VII and FA, respectively, accidentally discovered during experiments with yellow fever, have been shown to be immunologically related to each other, as well as to the virus of mouse encephalomyelitis. 2. Infection of the central nervous system can be produced with both strains by intracerebral, intranasal, or intraperitoneal inoculations. The cardinal symptom produced by the GD VII strain of virus by all three methods of inoculation is a flaccid paralysis of the limbs. The symptoms produced by the FA strain are referable to lesions of the brain when infecti…

Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infection and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) are considered among the best models of human multiple sclerosis (MS). In both models, clinical disease is characterized by paralysis, while pathological changes consist of inflammatory demyelination. In both models there is a genetic influence on susceptibility/resistance to the development of disease. This has been thoroughly studied in TMEV infection, and it has been found to depend on both major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and non-MHC genes. At least four genes have been so far …

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating multisystem disorder of unclear etiology that affects many individuals worldwide. One of its hallmark symptoms is prolonged fatigue following exertion, a feature also observed in long COVID, suggesting an underlying dysfunction in energy production in both conditions. Here, mitochondrial dysfunction and its potential pathogenetic role in these disorders are reviewed.

A 38-year-old man developed headache, dysarthria and dysphasia after insufflation of cocaine. Brain imaging showed multiple white matter lesions, suggesting acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), but the clinical features were atypical for demyelination. These lesions may represent a levamisole-associated vascular endotheliopathy, with a mechanism similar to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Levamisole is a no longer used chemotherapeutic agent but is a legally acquirable veterinary antihelminthic and is often used to adulterate cocaine. Given the rise in cocaine-related hosp…

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that can mimic other neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. ADEM is thought to manifest in the presence of environmental triggers, namely viral or bacterial infections, with multiple simultaneous neurological deficits, frequently accompanied by encephalopathy. Here, we report the case of a 49-year-old female patient who presented in the emergency department with encephalopathy, right-side muscle weakness, dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, and postural imbalance, preceded …

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disorder of unknown physiopathology with multisystemic repercussions, framed in ICD-11 under the heading of neurology (8E49). There is no specific test to support its clinical diagnosis. Our objective is to review the evidence in neuroimaging and dysautonomia evaluation in order to support the neurological involvement and to find biomarkers serving to identify and/or monitor the pathology. The symptoms typically appear acutely, although they can develop progressively over years; an essential trait for diagnosis is "central" fatig…

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated and degenerating disease in which myelin sheaths are damaged as a result of chronic progressive inflammation of the central nervous system. Tibolone [(7α,17α)-17-hydroxy-7-methyl-19-norpregn-5(10)-en-20-in-3-one], a synthetic estrogenic compound with tissue-specific actions and used for menopausal hormone therapy, shows neuroprotective and antioxidant properties both in vivo and in vitro. In the present study, we analyzed whether tibolone plays a therapeutic role in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mice, a commonly used model of MS. …
