Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a cutaneous neoplasm analogous to solid papillary carcinoma of breast.

We describe two cases of a distinctive in situ and invasive cutaneous adnexal neoplasm occurring in the eyelid. Mucinous carcinoma represented the invasive portion of the tumor in one case, whereas the other infiltrated in small solid nests. The in situ component is identical to the recently described solid papillary carcinoma of the breast (endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ). Both tumors produced intra- and extracellular mucin, exhibited endocrine differentiation by immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis, and were positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors.

Whole-body analysis of TRPML3 (MCOLN3) expression using a GFP-reporter mouse model reveals widespread expression in secretory cells and endocrine glands.

TRPML3 (mucolipin 3, MCOLN3) is an endolysosomal cation channel belonging to the TRPML subfamily of transient receptor potential channels. Gain-of-function mutations in the Trpml3 gene cause deafness, circling behavior and coat color dilution in mice due to cell death of TRPML3-expressing hair cells of the inner ear or skin melanocytes, respectively. Furthermore, TRPML3 was found to play a role in the long term survival of cochlear hair cells (its absence contributing to presbycusis), in specialized giant lysosomes that neonatal (birth to weaning) enterocytes used for the uptake and digestion

Morphological and ultrastructural study of selected endocrine gland (thyroid, ultimobranchial, and adrenal) in Egyptian Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavos).

The thyroid, ultimobranchial, and adrenal glands are major endocrine organs in birds, essential for regulating various physiological functions. This study presents a comprehensive morphological and ultrastructural investigation of these three glands in adult male Egyptian turkeys using light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thyroid and ultimobranchial glands are in the thoracic cavity near the trachea, while the adrenal glands are positioned adjacent to the caudal vena cava and cranial poles of the kidneys. Histologically, the thyroid follicles are lined by simple cu

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma and associated primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma: Review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade, cutaneous adnexal carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation. It is considered to be a precursor of invasive neuroendocrine type primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma (PCMC). OBJECTIVE: To review clinicopathological literature summary of EMPSGC and associated neuroendocrine PCMC from all reported cases and compare its behavior vs non-neuroendocrine PCMC data reported in the literature. METHODS: A review of English literature of all EMPSGC cases with and without associated PCMC was carried out. RESUL

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the peno-scrotum with systemic metastases: A rare case report.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare adnexal tumor with a predilection for the skin of the eyelid. It has also been reported in other areas of the face. Extra facial location has rarely been reported. They are twice as common in the females as compared to men and frequently affect the elderly between 50 and 80 years of age. It is a low-grade carcinoma with no reported cases of metastases, although a few cases with recurrences have been reported. Since it was first described by Flieder et al. in 1997, fewer than 60 cases have been reported in the literature. We des

An Update on Endocrine Mucin-producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma: Clinicopathologic Study of 63 Cases and Comparative Analysis.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade adnexal neoplasm with predilection for the periorbital skin of older women. Histologically and immunophenotypically, EMPSGC is analogous to another neoplasm with neuroendocrine differentiation, solid papillary carcinoma of the breast. Both lesions are spatially associated with neuroendocrine mucinous adenocarcinomas of the skin and breast, respectively. EMPSGC is ostensibly a precursor of neuroendocrine-type mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma (MSC), a lesion of uncertain prognosis. Non-neuroendocrine MSC has been de

Fetal Exposure to Low Levels of the Plasticizer DEHP Predisposes the Adult Male Adrenal Gland to Endocrine Disruption.

In utero exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may affect adult health. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an EDC widely used in the production of polyvinyl chloride products and an ubiquitous environmental contaminant. We used a rat model system to show that fetal exposure to DEHP decreased levels of major steroid hormones in adulthood and that environmentally-relevant levels of DEHP affected both gene expression and epigenomic loci that were affected by exposure to high levels. In the adrenal gland, we reported that the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and cho

Endocrine rhythms in the brown bear (Ursus arctos): Evidence supporting selection for decreased pineal gland size.

Many temperate zone animals adapt to seasonal changes by altering their physiology. This is mediated in large part by endocrine signals that encode day length and regulate energy balance and metabolism. The objectives of this study were to determine if the daily patterns of two important hormones, melatonin and cortisol, varied with day length in captive brown bears (Ursus arctos) under anesthetized and nonanesthetized conditions during the active (March-October) and hibernation periods. Melatonin concentrations varied with time of day and season in nonanesthetized female bears despite exceedi

Treatment of synchronous mucinous carcinoma and endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma with Mohs' micrographic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma is a very rare cutaneous tumor that has been reported only in three patients previously. We report a case of an endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma associated with mucinous carcinoma treated by Mohs' micrographic surgery. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to test the utility of Mohs' micrographic surgery in the treatment of mucinous carcinomata. METHODS: A 79-year-old female with a 2-year history of four lesions of biopsy-proven endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinomas and mucinous carcinoma was treated wi

Analysis of cell signalling in the rodent pineal gland deciphers regulators of dynamic transcription in neural/endocrine cells.

In neurons, a temporally restricted expression of cAMP-inducible genes is part of many developmental and adaptive processes. To understand such dynamics, the neuroendocrine rodent pineal gland provides an excellent model system as it has a clearly defined input, the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, and a measurable output, the hormone melatonin. In this system, a regulatory scenario has been deciphered, wherein cAMP-inducible genes are rapidly activated via the transcription factor phosphoCREB to induce transcriptional events necessary for an increase in hormone synthesis. However, among the a

Diabetes-linked zinc transporter ZnT8 is a homodimeric protein expressed by distinct rodent endocrine cell types in the pancreas and other glands.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Zinc is abundant in pancreas, being required by endocrine islet cells for hormone secretion and by exocrine acinar cells as pancreatic juice component. ZnT8 is a member of the SLC30A family of zinc transporters whose overexpression in cultured pancreatic beta cells leads to increased insulin secretion in response to glucose, suggesting a possible role in regulating glycemia. ZnT8 was therefore proposed as a therapeutic target for diabetes, and recent genome-wide association studies identified polymorphisms in the ZNT8 gene conferring increased type 2 diabetes risk. SCREENED: A Multistage Model of Thyroid Gland Function for Screening Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in a Biologically Sex-Specific Manner.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are chemicals that contribute to health problems by interfering with the physiological production and target effects of hormones, with proven impacts on a number of endocrine systems including the thyroid gland. Exposure to EDs has also been associated with impairment of the reproductive system and incidence in occurrence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases during ageing. SCREENED aims at developing in vitro assays based on rodent and human thyroid cells organized in three different three-dimensional (3D) constructs. Due to different levels of an

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a study of three cases and CK8, CK18 and CD5/6 immunoexpression.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma is a cutaneous adnexal tumor that is rarely reported in the literature. We identified only 29 previously reported cases. All these cases share some clinical morphologic and immunohistochemical features. Among the immunohistochemical markers, cytokeratins 5/6, 8 and 18 (CK5/6, CK8 and CK18) had not been previously studied in this tumor. Although studies with cytokeratin Cam5.2 exist, we know at present that this marker does not correspond to antibodies CK8/18, but rather to CK7 and CK8. We studied three examples of endocrine mucin-producing sweat
