Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a congenital malformation caused by the absence of ganglion cells in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses of the gut. Recent studies have shown that mutations in the RET, glial-cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), endothelin-B receptor (EDNRB), endothelin-3 genes are responsible for the occurrence of aganglionosis. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Hirschsprung's disease (HD, HSCR) is one of the most common diseases in the field of pediatric surgery. It is well known that the aganglionic bowel is primarily a causative factor of dismotility of distal narrow segment. Recent studies have shown that mutations in endothelin-B receptor (EDNRB), endothelin-3, RET, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) genes are responsible for the occurrence of congenital aganglionosis. BACKGROUND: To test the hypothesis that endothelin-1 contributes to cardiac fibrosis, cardiac collagen deposition was studied in deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt (DOCA-salt) hypertensive rats, in which the endothelin system is activated.
