PURPOSE: To study: the epidemiology of an outbreak of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis in a UK teaching hospital; disease presentation and its effect on clinical diagnostic efficiency; patterns of viral transmission between staff and patients; the effectiveness of infection control procedures in minimising outbreaks.

After description of the clinical and serological features of an epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by adeno-virus (Type 8) the author compares results of 4 methods of treatment. The schedule consisted of "Okuzell-Coldan" eye drops as placebo, eye drops of corticosteroid content, intramuscular inoculation with Interferonogen and a combined treatment with 0.3 percent "Neutralrot" eye drops and radiation with daylight lamp HPR 125 W produced by Philips Co. Ltd. The transition from the conjunctival form to the keratic form could be best prevented through the last named therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a new outbreak of "mass hysteria" or "epidemic conversion disorder" occurring in Barcelona in 1997. Based on this outbreak's features differentiating it from other similar outbreaks described in the literature or treated by the same team, to propose a change in the theoretical framework for these group somatomorphic phenomena.
DESIGN: A study describing clinical epidemiological research and the interventions performed.
SETTING: Urban health centre. Epidemiological research and data analysis performed by the Municipal Health Institute (MHI) of Barcelona.
