Estimation of prediction error for survival models.

When statistical models are used to predict the values of unobserved random variables, loss functions are often used to quantify the accuracy of a prediction. The expected loss over some specified set of occasions is called the prediction error. This paper considers the estimation of prediction error when regression models are used to predict survival times and discusses the use of these estimates. Extending the previous work, we consider both point and confidence interval estimations of prediction error, and allow for variable selection and model misspecification. Different estimators are com

Anxiety sensitivity: stability in prospective research.

Several recent panic prevention studies suggest that anxiety sensitivity, as measured by the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), may not be stable under certain conditions. In two investigations [Behav. Ther. 32 (2001) 725; Disertation Abstr. Int. 62 (2001) 4226], wait-list or no-treatment conditions produced ASI scores at follow-up that were significantly reduced from baseline and comparable to those of the intervention groups. Although design characteristics could not rule out regression to the mean as the source of these changes, the authors suggested that these findings were most likely due t

The German Environmental Survey 1990/1992 (GerES II): a representative population study.

The German Environmental Survey (GerES) is a large-scale population study which has repeatedly been carried out in Germany. GerES I was conducted in 1985/1986 followed by GerES IIa in 1990/1991 (West Germany) and GerES IIb in 1991/1992 (East Germany). GerES III is currently run in both parts of Germany. The main goal of the surveys is to analyse and document the extent, distribution and determinants of the exposure to environmental pollutants of the German general population. Field work is conducted using a combination of several tools, including questionnaires, interviews, human biomonitoring

Biomarker research in neurotoxicology: the role of mechanistic studies to bridge the gap between the laboratory and epidemiological investigations.

There is an increasing interest in the development and validation of biomarkers for use in biochemical/molecular epidemiological studies. Though the area of neurotoxicology has received much attention in the past several years, it still lags behind with regard to the development of biomarkers, particularly those of health effects and susceptibility. This review discusses several aspects of biomarker research as it relates to neurotoxic compounds and focuses on selected agents (organophosphorus insecticides, styrene, n-hexane, carbon disulfide, acrylamide), which have been the subject of a numb

[Population contacts in the Republic of Guinea with ectoparasites and rodents based on questionnaire data. 1. The tasks and the scope of the questionnaire].

Questionnaire is presented which was used in 1987 in 15 regions (28,400 inhabitants) of 3 landscape climatic areas in Guinea: savanna-forest, light and damp tropical forests. The questionnaire was aimed at obtaining quantitative characteristics on important items of population economic activity and number of potential hosts and carriers of natural focus infections in the buildings. Types of the population occupation were differentiated in conformity with various biotopes the people belong to, and according to their direct contacts with domestic, synanthropic and wild animals. The quantity of l

Hiring, training, and supporting Peer Research Associates: Operationalizing community-based research principles within epidemiological studies by, with, and for women living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: A community-based research (CBR) approach is critical to redressing the exclusion of women-particularly, traditionally marginalized women including those who use substances-from HIV research participation and benefit. However, few studies have articulated their process of involving and engaging peers, particularly within large-scale cohort studies of women living with HIV where gender, cultural and linguistic diversity, HIV stigma, substance use experience, and power inequities must be navigated. METHODS: Through our work on the Canadian HIV Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health

Strategies to preserve prostate health.

The present review addresses strategies to preserve prostate health, tackling the three most common prostatic problems with which men present to physicians, namely, prostate hypertrophy, prostatitis and prostate cancer. Unfortunately since a clear etiology does not exist for each of these problems, we have to rely on experimental research, epidemiologic and clinical data to design prevention strategies. A number of modifiable targets have been identified and some are cross-shared between these three very prevalent entities. However, since the pathogenesis of each condition seems multifactorial

Intermittent explosive disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement.

CONTEXT: Epidemiologic studies of adults show that DSM-IV intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a highly prevalent and seriously impairing disorder. Although retrospective reports in these studies suggest that IED typically begins in childhood, no previous epidemiologic research has directly examined the prevalence or correlates of IED among youth. OBJECTIVE: To present epidemiologic data on the prevalence and correlates of IED among US adolescents in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement. DESIGN: United States survey of adolescent (age, 13-17 years) DSM-IV anx

Primary prevention of secondary disorders: a proposal and agenda.

This paper calls for consideration of a new class of preventive interventions designed explicitly to prevent comorbidity of psychiatric disorders. Epidemiologic data show that successful interventions of this type could be extremely valuable, as up to half of lifetime psychiatric disorders and an even larger percent of chronic and seriously impairing disorders occur to people with a prior history of some other disorder. Furthermore, a review of etiologic hypotheses concerning the causes of comorbidity suggests that interventions aimed at primary prevention of secondary disorders might be feasi

Approaches to psychiatric assessment in epidemiological studies of children.

An assessment protocol for the longitudinal measurement of developmental psychopathology in a population-based study of children and adolescents is proposed. The protocol is designed for use in a large cohort of up to 100,000 individuals followed from early gestation to 21 years of age. Although the protocol was constrained by specified methodological parameters, the recommendations may apply to other psychiatric epidemiological research designs. The issues and challenges inherent with psychiatric assessments in longitudinal epidemiological studies of children and adolescents are discussed.

Partial- or full-mouth approaches to assessing the prevalence of and risk factors for periodontal disease in young adults.

BACKGROUND: While partial-mouth recording is often used in epidemiological studies of periodontal disease because of the efficiencies afforded in data collection, there has been no investigation of the extent to which information is lost in studies of young adults using the combined attachment loss (CAL) approach. METHODS: A random sample of 25- and 26-year-olds was periodontally examined at 3 sites per tooth in all 4 quadrants. The analysis obtained full-mouth prevalence estimates for gingival recession (GR), probing depth (PD), and CAL. The half-mouth analyses took 3 forms: 1) estimates fro

Endometriosis and ovarian cancer: thoughts on shared pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis appears to predispose to ovarian cancer. How this may occur has been little discussed. STUDY DESIGN: This article reviews the English language literature for in vitro, animal, clinical, and epidemiologic studies linking the two conditions. RESULTS: Pathology case series consistently report endometrioid and clear cell types of ovarian cancer arising from endometriotic foci. Epidemiologic studies have been consistent with this association. There are also marked similarities between the proposed etiology of ovarian cancer and the observed pathophysiology of endometrios

[How does collective violence shape the health status of its victims? Conceptual model and design of the ISAVIC study].

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic research on collective violence (violence exerted by and within groups in pursuit of political, social or economic goals) is very scarce despite its growing recognition as a major public health issue. This paper describes the conceptual model and design of one of the first research studies conducted in Spain aiming to assess the impact of collective violence in the health status of its victims (study known as ISAVIC, based on its Spanish title Impacto en la SAlud de la VIolencia Colectiva). METHODS: Starting with a comprehensive but non-systematic review of the liter

Seroepidemiologic Study Designs for Determining SARS-COV-2 Transmission and Immunity.

Serologic studies are crucial for clarifying dynamics of the coronavirus disease pandemic. Past work on serologic studies (e.g., during influenza pandemics) has made relevant contributions, but specific conditions of the current situation require adaptation. Although detection of antibodies to measure exposure, immunity, or both seems straightforward conceptually, numerous challenges exist in terms of sample collection, what the presence of antibodies actually means, and appropriate analysis and interpretation to account for test accuracy and sampling biases. Successful deployment of serologic

A prospective field study of U.S. Army trainees to identify the physiological bases and key factors influencing musculoskeletal injuries: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are common in military trainees and present a considerable threat to occupational fitness, deployability, and overall military readiness. Despite the negative effects of MSKIs on military readiness, comprehensive evaluations of the key known and possible risk factors for MSKIs are lacking. The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (ARIEM) is initiating a large-scale research effort, the ARIEM Reduction in Musculoskeletal Injury (ARMI) Study, to better understand the interrelationships among a wide range of potential MSKI risk factor

A Multicenter Cost-of-Illness and Long-term Socioeconomic Follow-up Study in the Severe Typhoid Fever in Africa Program: Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: There are limited data on typhoid fever cost of illness (COI) and economic impact from Africa. Health economic data are essential for measuring the cost-effectiveness of vaccination or other disease control interventions. Here, we describe the protocol and methods for conducting the health economic studies under the Severe Typhoid Fever in Africa (SETA) program. METHODS: The SETA health economic studies will rely on the platform for SETA typhoid surveillance in 4 African countries-Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Madagascar. A COI and long-term socioeconomic study (LT-SES) will
