Prevalence of Fecal Indicators and Viruses on Touchscreens and Other High-Touch Surfaces in Retail Food Establishments in the United States.

Electronic touchscreens are common in retail food settings, though little is known about their microbial profile. In this study, electronic touchscreens were sampled in retail food establishments in four states spread across the U.S. to assess the prevalence of fecal indicators and microbes. Surface swabs of touchscreens and other high-touch surfaces (ATMs, credit card machines, restroom door handles, and employee phones; n = 175) were collected from grocery and convenience stores, and from quick service and casual dining restaurants. Heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs), coliforms, and Escherich

Evaluation of the effect of closed system transfer device syringe adaptor connection in the isolator on cytotoxic residue contamination during intravenous administration.

IntroductionThe European Biosafety Network recommends that cytotoxic drug surface contamination in pharmacies and patient wards not exceed 0.1 ng/cm2. Among other mitigations, closed system transfer devices (CSTDs) are recommended in the US, Europe, and UK for the reduction of surface contamination. Although in the UK CSTDs are not part of standard cytotoxic preparation procedures in isolators, CSTD syringe adaptors are recommended for use with syringes for intravenous administration. We investigated whether the addition of a CSTD syringe adaptor in the isolator reduces cytotoxic residue conta

Drug residues recovered in feed after various feedlot mixer truck cleanout procedures.

A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of two methods of equipment cleanout, sequencing or flushing, for reducing drug carryover in feedlot mixer trucks. Feed samples were collected from total mixed rations before and after various feed mixer equipment cleanout procedures. Medicated rations contained either 11 ppm of tylosin or 166 or 331 ppm of chlortetracycline. There were no differences between sequencing and flushing or between flushing with dry barley and flushing with barley silage in the median proportion of drug recovered in the next ration. A larger drug reduction was ac

Investigating the effect of microtube capping/decapping methods on Escherichia coli collection contamination: Introducing a novel automatic microtube capper/decapper.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying sample volumes (200 μL, 500 μL, and 1000 μL) on the leakage rates of samples between spin-down and non-spin-down conditions for the target genes Tet and uid-A, comparing machine-operated and manual protocols. The study was designed to assess the differences between mechanical versus manual operators handling different-volume specimens. JM109 Escherichia coli suspensions, carrying the plasmid pBR322 and in the logarithmic growth phase, were aliquoted into 1.5-mL microcentrifuge tubes and divided into six groups based on contamination risk (mini

Everything but the Kitchen Sink: An Analysis of Bacterial and Chemical Contaminants Found in Syringe Residue From People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk of severe wounds, invasive infections, and overdoses. To date, there are few data on the bacterial and chemical contaminants PWID are exposed to when using illicitly manufactured fentanyls and stimulants. METHODS: Previously used injection drug use equipment was recovered in St Louis, Missouri, by harm reduction organizations over a 12-month period. Syringe residue was analyzed for bacterial contaminants by routine culturing followed by whole genome sequencing of single bacterial isolates. Chemical adulterants in syringe residue were

Impact of ethylene oxide gas sterilization of duodenoscopes after a carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae outbreak.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) outbreaks have been implicated at several medical institutions involving gastroenterology laboratories and, specifically, duodenoscopes. Currently, there are no specific guidelines to eradicate or prevent the outbreak of this bacteria. We describe ethylene oxide (ETO) gas sterilizations of duodenoscopes to address this issue. METHODS: A complete investigation of the gastroenterology laboratory and an evaluation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that no lapses were found in the reprocessing of the equi

Hospital-acquired listeriosis linked to a persistently contaminated milkshake machine.

One case of hospital-acquired listeriosis was linked to milkshakes produced in a commercial-grade shake freezer machine. This machine was found to be contaminated with a strain of Listeria monocytogenes epidemiologically and molecularly linked to a contaminated pasteurized, dairy-based ice cream product at the same hospital a year earlier, despite repeated cleaning and sanitizing. Healthcare facilities should be aware of the potential for prolonged Listeria contamination of food service equipment. In addition, healthcare providers should consider counselling persons who have an increased risk

Study on the removal efficacy and influencing factors of bacterial endotoxin on reusable surgical instruments.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial endotoxins from reusable surgical instruments are key risk factors for postoperative fever and nosocomial infections, with unclear contamination and removal features. Conventional disinfection/sterilization has limited effects due to the endotoxins' strong thermal stability, threatening clinical safety. AIM: To investigate the effects of different postuse placement times and processing procedures (cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization) on endotoxin contamination and removal efficiency of reusable surgical instruments, and to provide a scientific basis for optimizing

Designing a set of reference standards for non-targeted analysis of polymer additives extracted from medical devices.

BACKGROUND: The accurate analysis of extractables and leachables (E&L) from medical devices is crucial for the reliable safety risk assessment of substances to which patients and users may be exposed. The extractable profile of medical devices is often complex and unpredictable, thus improper selection of reference standards can lead to irreproducible chemical analyses between laboratories. ISO 10993-18, the international consensus standard for chemical characterization of medical devices, does not specify a process for selection of appropriate chemical reference standards for non-targeted ana

Cost of sterility: probe covers should not be mandated for single-shot peripheral nerve blocks.

Ultrasound guidance has become ubiquitous with regional anesthesia, but little consistency exists on necessary ultrasound probe hygiene and sterility barriers. Fear of possible infection has led to calls for universal use of sterile ultrasound probe covers. Available data seems to suggest that single-shot peripheral nerve blocks have a low infectious risk. The widespread use of single-use disposable probe covers would carry an associated cost, increased environmental impact, and little evidence to suggest that they are effective at preventing infection if proper technique is used. While variou

Disposable Bronchoscope Model for Simulating Endoscopic Reprocessing and Surveillance Cultures.

BACKGROUND Endoscope-associated infections are reported despite following proper reprocessing methods. Microbiological testing can confirm the adequacy of endoscope reprocessing. Multiple controversies related to the method and interpretation of microbiological testing cultures have arisen that make their routine performance a complex target. OBJECTIVE We conducted a pilot study using disposable bronchoscopes (DBs) to simulate different reprocessing times and soaking times and to compare high-level disinfection versus ethylene oxide sterilization. We also reviewed the time to reprocessing and

The use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs to prevent adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to medical polymers.

The effect of salicylates and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on the production of Staphylococcus epidermidis extracellular slime was studied. A dose-related decrease in slime production was observed with increasing concentrations of salicylic acid. S. epidermidis grown in 5 mM salicylic acid were less likely to adhere to Silastic, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, and Teflon catheters (P less than .006); strains grown in 2 mM salicylic acid, ibuprofen, indomethacin, or phenylbutazone were less adherent to Silastic catheters (P less than .001). Similar results were obtained with poly

Ribotyping and a study of transmission of Staphylococcus aureus collected from food preparation facilities.

Food poisoning from Staphylococcus aureus is sometimes caused by improper handling of food items in food preparation facilities. Prevention of contamination by employees is particularly important in facilities where a significant amount of food preparation is performed by hand. Some experiments have been performed to describe bacterial cross-contamination in the food preparation process, but there have been few studies of cross-contamination in actual food preparation facilities. Aiming to shed light on the transmission of S. aureus in food preparation facilities, this study collected samples
