A case of giant osteoma of frontal sinus passing into anterior fossa of the skull, ethmoid and orbit at the right side in a 17-year-old boy was introduced. The osteoma has been surgically removed with neurosurgeon cooperation. Considering the large damage of bone, reconstruction of the frontal part by "Codubix" was done. Post-surgical course without complications and good cosmetic effect were obtained.

BACKGROUND: Nasal vestibule squamous cell carcinoma (NVSCC) is an ill-defined underestimated condition.
AIM/OBJECTIVE: To define the current standard of care.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We review recent acquisitions concerning clinical features and therapeutic approaches.
RESULTS: The current AJCC staging system, which attributes to nasal vestibule the same topographic code as nasal cavity proper and the same T-classification criteria as ethmoid, appears inadequate. As for treatment of primary lesions without bone invasion, current evidence suggests that brachytherapy is at least equivalent to su

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign but locally aggressive bone tumor that usually involves the end of long bones. It is a relatively common neoplasm in patients, constituting 5 to 10% of all benign bone tumors. Approximately 2% of GCTs occur in the craniofacial skeleton with a predilection for the ethmoid, sphenoid, and temporal bones. The skull base location is unique and not commonly described. Hearing loss, headache, tinnitus, and subcutaneous masses are the most commonly reported symptoms in GCTs of the skull base. In this case report we present the first description of a GCT within the in

BACKGROUND: The relation between the osteocartilaginous nasal vault and nasal hump characteristics has not been fully investigated.
METHODS: Measurements were collected from computed tomographic nasal scans in the midsagittal plane in adult Caucasian patients seeking rhinoplasty because of nasal hump from January of 2015 to December of 2018. Measurements were compared to those of sex- and age-matched patients not seeking rhinoplasty (control group). Patients with other significant nasal deformities were excluded. The correlations between nasal hump length, height, and osteocartilaginous nasal

Fronto-ethmoidal mucocoeles have the capacity to destroy bone. Sinus lining tissue has been obtained at surgery from patients with mucocoeles, from those with chronic sinusitis undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery and from patients undergoing craniofacial resection. Tissues have been frozen, sectioned, and subjected to immunohistochemical examination with monospecific antibodies for the presence of the potent osteolytic cytokines interleukins-1 and -6 and tumour necrosis factor alpha. In addition, the chemotactic intercrine--interleukin-8 was investigated. The presence of the cytokine-inducible

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign fibro-osseous lesion seen in the bones of the head and neck area. It is mostly found in the mandible followed by the maxilla and rarely in the paranasal sinuses along with the orbit and skull bones.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old male patient presented with headache and incidental finding of a right ethmoidal sinus ossifying fibroma by paranasal-sinuses CT scan and MRI of the face. A flexible fiber-optic nasal endoscopy examination revealed a right side fullness. A non-contrasted CT scan of the paranasal sinus showed hyperdense lesion at the ri

The CT imaging and clinical presentation in 14 children with coexistent intracranial sepsis and sinusitis were reviewed. A routine CT head scan (10-mm thick semi-axial slices through the cranium done before and after intravenous contrast medium administration) was found to be an inadequate initial investigation as the intracranial collection was missed in four patients and the abnormal sinuses not shown in six. In half the children the diagnosis of sinusitis was unsuspected at the time of admission. The dominant clinical features were fever, intense headache and facial swelling in early adoles

The anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) is an important surgical landmark for procedures involving the anterior cranial fossa. Many variations in the location and branching pattern of the AEA have been reported throughout the literature. These anatomical variations are important for surgeons to be familiar with as injury to the AEA can lead to massive haemorrhage, orbital haematomas, and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea. Anatomical landmarks such as the ethmoidal foramen can be used to identify the location of the AEA; however, it is also important to consider that the foramen may have variable pre

Encephaloceles are uncommon in western countries and most cases are located in the occipital bone. Frontal encephaloceles may involve the ethmoid bone, nasal bones and/or the orbits. Surgical repair is complex and usually requires a multidisciplinary approach. The goal of the surgery is to reconstruct the normal anatomy, to achieve a good cosmetic repair and to avoid a cerebrospinal fluid leak. We present a case of a patient with a large congenital frontoethmoidal encephalocele. Autologous calvarian bone grafts were used to repair of encephalocele defect and for the reconstruction of the front…

INTRODUCTION: It is clear that the importance of the ethmoidal foramen (EF) is based on its vascular contents. The frontoethmoidal suture (FS) line is recommended as more reliable navigational landmark for identifying the EF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The vertical orientation between the EF and the FS line was studied in 188 orbits using a computer software program.
RESULTS: 146 anterior EFs (77.7 %) and 42 anterior EFs (22.3 %) were situated in the FS line as intrasutural and extrasutural, respectively. 146 posterior EFs (77.25 %) and 8 posterior EFs (4.25 %) were presented as intrasutural and

Osteosarcomas of the craniofacial bones account for fewer than 10% of all osteosarcomas. Primary osteosarcomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus are rare (0.5-8.1% of the osteosarcomas occur in this location). Because of the rarity of this presentation, we report a case of osteogenic osteosarcoma arising de novo from the ethmoid bone in a 13 year old male who presented with discharge from the right eye and headaches. We describe the imaging features of this rare tumor and provide a brief review of the literature.

Tumor resection in the medial canthal area may result in deep defects with involvement of the ethmoidal bone and destruction of the lacrimal ducts. While shallow defects with little involvement of bone can be covered with the classic glabellar flap, deep defects require larger fasciocutaneous flaps from the forehead that can also be used for the reconstruction of the involved medial parts of the eyelids. The preferred techniques of the median or paramedian transposition flaps and a modified paramedian fascial flap for reconstruction of the medial orbital wall and support of the orbit are descr

From a series of 118 fronto-ethmoidal mucocoeles, 40 specimens have been submitted to detailed histological analysis. The frequency of each epithelial and sub-epithelial component is considered and reveals features which support a dynamic theory of bone resorption and formation rather than that of pressure erosion in the pathogenesis of mucocoeles.

Fibrous dysplasia of the bone is characterized by immature fibrous bones of trabeculae and fibrovascular proliferation in the medulla. In this study, we report three consecutive patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia with or without optic nerve involvement. In Case 1, a 43-year-old man with blurred vision in the right eye at the first visit was well until the age of 54 years, when he came back with symptoms suggestive of paranasal sinusitis. Computed tomography scans disclosed a mucocele in the right sphenoid sinus and thickened bilateral ethmoid, sphenoid, and frontal bones. He underwen

INTRODUCTION: Osteomas are slow- growing, benign tumors. They are the most common neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses. They are usually originates from the frontal and ethmoid sinus and much less frequently seen in the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Although the lamina papyracea is a part of ethmoid bone, a giant osteoma originated from the lamina papyracea is very uncommon. An osteoma of the paranasal sinus is usually asymptomatic. Headache, proptosis, epiphora, diplopia, dizziness, facial deformity, face pain and cerebral complications are possible symptoms. The treatment of the paranasal os…

Endoscopic surgical approaches for chronic frontal sinusitis require the reestablishment of adequate frontal sinus ventilation and drainage for relief of symptoms. After the resection of anterior ethmoid mucosal disease and cellular structure, the anterior to posterior depth of the nasofrontal beak to the base of skull at the insertion of the ethmoidal bulla (frontal sinus ostium) often represents a critical margin for functional success. However, little information concerning this dimension is available. Depending on intraoperative surgical judgment of this distance, extended endoscopic surgi
