Agonadal presumptive XX/XY leukochimeric pig.

BACKGROUND: XX/XY chimeric pigs are uncommon and their reproductive anatomy is variable and unpredictable. METHOD: A piglet was identified by its enlarged vulva as a possible intersex. Venous blood was collected at 1.5 and 9 months for karyotyping and determination of testosterone and estrone sulphate concentrations. At 1 year euthanasia was performed. The reproductive tract was carefully dissected and examined histologically. RESULTS: As the animal matured the vulva did not develop relative to the size of the animal. Lymphocyte cultures indicated a 70% XX/30% XY chimera. The reproductive tr

Methods of humane killing of laboratory fish: FELASA Working Group recommendations.

As commissioned by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations, these working group recommendations define the requirements to achieve the humane killing of fish, compare methods of killing, recommend methods of killing depending on context, and detail protocols leading to good practice. With a review of current practices in a fish laboratory and available literature to guide the recommendations, the concept of ideal euthanasia is discussed, and the dilemma of a prompt but stressful death versus a slow but stress-free experience is introduced. Noticeably, the context of f

Calving-related intradural avulsion injuries of the thoracolumbar spinal nerve roots in a calf.

Calving difficulty may lead to traumatic peripheral nerve injury. A male, 8-mo-old, Japanese Black calf with a history of secondary dystocia as a result of fetal gigantism had lameness and gait disturbance. At autopsy, multifocal dural thickening with adhesions to the adjacent spinal cord was observed at T12-13 and L4-5 vertebral levels. Microscopically, numerous traumatic neuroma-like fascicles of nerve twigs were embedded in the dura mater with abundant collagenous connective tissue. By immunohistochemistry, axons and Schwann cells were confirmed in each nerve fascicle. Our observations sugg

Anti-C2-mediated complement inhibition prevents disease in a rat passive transfer model of myasthenia gravis.

Acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive myasthenia gravis (AChR-MG) is a rare autoimmune disease in which AChR autoantibodies trigger complement activation and cause damage to the neuromuscular junction. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of an anti-C2 antibody in the rat passive transfer model of myasthenia gravis (PTMG). Female Lewis rats (n = 36) were prophylactically treated with either an anti-rat C2 antibody or an IgG isotype control 2 h prior to subcutaneous injection of mAb35 (PTMG) or saline (non-MG). Serum samples were collected at several timepoints during the study and

[Seringueira's latex membrane (Hevea brasiliensis) with and without polylysine 0.1% and marlex mesh for the reconstruction of iatrogenics abdominal wall defects in rats].

PURPOSE: To compare seringueira latex membrane implant, with and without polylysine at 0.1% and marlex mesh on the repair of iatrogenic abdominal defects in rats. METHODS: A circular segment block of approximate three centimeters of diameter was sectioned out of the ventral abdominal muscle wall of 31 Wistar rats. The skin was preserved. The animals were divided into three experimental groups: only latex, latex and polylysine at 0.1%, and marlex mesh. Some rats underwent euthanasia at five and some at 120 days after surgery. Fragments of abdominal wall were collected and submitted at histopat

Modelling severe Staphylococcus aureus sepsis in conscious pigs: are implications for animal welfare justified?

BACKGROUND: A porcine model of haematogenous Staphylococcus aureus sepsis has previously been established in our research group. In these studies, pigs developed severe sepsis including liver dysfunction during a 48 h study period. As pigs were awake during the study, animal welfare was challenged by the severity of induced disease, which in some cases necessitated humane euthanasia. A pilot study was therefore performed in order to establish the sufficient inoculum concentration and application protocol needed to produce signs of liver dysfunction within limits of our pre-defined humane endpo

Vascularized Muscle Flap to Reduce Wound Breakdown During Flexible Electrode-Mediated Functional Electrical Stimulation After Peripheral Nerve Injury.

The success of devices delivering functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been hindered by complications related to implants including skin breakdown and subsequent wound dehiscence. Our hypothesis was that a vascularized muscle flap along the dorsal surface of an epimysial electrode would prevent skin breakdown during FES therapy to treat atrophy of the gastrocnemius muscle during peripheral nerve injury. Resection of a tibial nerve segment with subsequent electrode implantation on the dorsal surfaces of the gastrocnemius muscle was performed on ten Lewis rats. In five rats, the biceps fe

[Enterological complications following ovariohysterectomy in dogs (author's transl)].

Of 109 dogs submitted with complications following ovariohysterectomy, twenty were found to show enterological problems. Presenting symptoms in these animals consisted in vomiting, diarrhoea and emaciation. A large number of animals also showed body temperatures above 39 degrees C. An irregular, often painful mass was palpable on examination of the mesogastrium in seventeen cases. Plain radiography revealed the features of ileus in ten dogs, a mass of soft tissues in the abdominal cavity in six and the pattern of peritonitis in five cases (two animals were classifiable with two groups). One do

Mucosal injury following short-term tracheal intubation: A novel animal model and composite tracheal injury score.

OBJECTIVES: Postintubation laryngotracheal injury is common. Assessment of histopathological changes currently requires animal models. We set about developing a viable, resource effective animal model to study these effects and to develop a detailed tissue injury score. METHODS: Six pigs were anesthetized using a standard regimen. We intubated the tracheas using a standard endotracheal tube modified to include optical sensors. Animals were anesthetized for a duration of two to four hours, and their lungs were ventilated using a normoxic gas mixture. Following euthanasia, the tracheas were rem

Public health response to an imported case of canine melioidosis.

Melioidosis in humans presents variably as fulminant sepsis, pneumonia, skin infection and solid organ abscesses. It is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, which in the United States is classified as a select agent, with "potential to pose a severe threat to both human and animal health, to plant health or to animal and plant products" (Federal Select Agent Program, http://www.selectagents.gov/, accessed 22 September 2016). Burkholderia pseudomallei is found in soil and surface water in the tropics, especially South-East Asia and northern Australia, where melioidosis is endemic. Human cases a

Articular gout and suspected pseudogout in a Basilisk lizard (Basilicus plumifrons).

A 9-yr-old male Basilisk lizard (Basilicus plumifrons) with a history of painful and limited mobility for approximately 4 mo, which had seemed to be more pronounced in the front limbs, was presented for necropsy. The animal had exhibited moderate weight loss and anorexia before euthanasia. Postmortem examination revealed yellow-to-white, soft-to-semifirm nodules within the periarticular fascia and musculature of the left and right shoulder joints, hip joints, and stifle joints. Several other joints, including the left and right tarsi, left and right elbow joints, and the left carpus had calcif

Crabs as biomonitoring tools: Development of non-lethal techniques for hemolymph and urine collection to assess ecosystem health.

Traditional sampling methods in crabs often require invasive procedures or euthanasia, limiting their use in long-term and conservation-sensitive studies. This work aimed to develop and validate a non-lethal protocol for collecting hemolymph and urine from estuarine crab species. Sixty adult crabs of Ucides cordatus and Cardisoma guanhumi were assigned to four groups for fluid collection. Specimens were anesthetized using MS-222 (tricaine methanesulfonate) with water cooled prior to sampling. Hemolymph was obtained from the base of the last pereopod, while urine was collected from the bladder

Neurocysticercosis in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

An 8-y-old, intact, male rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) was sedated to undergo MRI in preparation for the implantation of cranial hardware. During imaging, 9 focal lesions were noted in the brain and musculature of the head. The lesions were hyperechoic with hypoechoic rims. The animal was deemed inappropriate for neuroscience research, and euthanasia was elected. Gross examination revealed multiple round, thick-walled, fluid-filled cysts (diameter, approximately 0.5 cm) in multiple tissues: one each in the left caudal lung lobe, left masseter muscle, and the dura overlying the brain and 8 th

Partial efficacy of a VSV-SIV/MVA-SIV vaccine regimen against oral SIV challenge in infant macaques.

Despite antiretroviral medications, the rate of pediatric HIV-1 infections through breast-milk transmission has been staggering in developing countries. Therefore, the development of a vaccine to protect vulnerable infant populations should be actively pursued. We previously demonstrated that oral immunization of newborn macaques with vesicular stomatitis virus expressing simian immunodeficiency virus genes (VSV-SIV) followed 2 weeks later by an intramuscular boost with modified vaccinia ankara virus expressing SIV (MVA-SIV) successfully induced SIV-specific T and B cell responses in multiple

Retrospective study of 28 cases of cholecystoduodenostomy performed using endoscopic gastrointestinal anastomosis stapling equipment.

Medical records were reviewed of 24 dogs and four cats that underwent cholecystoduodenostomy to relieve extrahepatic biliary obstruction. These procedures had been performed using a 30-mm endoscopic gastrointestinal anastomosis stapler. At presentation, most animals had clinical signs of vomiting and anorexia, and total bilirubin was elevated in both dogs (n=21) and cats (n=4). Pancreatitis (n=13), cholangiohepatitis (n=7), and neoplasia (n=6) were the most common underlying conditions. Sixteen dogs and two cats survived to their 2-week reevaluation. The most common cause of death was euthanas

Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia homozygote adult working horse with mild signs - A Case Report.

Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia (HERDA) is an autosomal recessive condition present in the American Quarter Horse and other related breeds. Resulting from a mutation in the peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase B (PPIB) gene, HERDA is homologous to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in humans. Characterized by fragile, hyperelastic, skin, HERDA affected horses often present first with slow-healing wounds usually on the dorsum, and resulting in atrophic scars, seromas, and ulcers. As there is no treatment for the condition affected horses are typically reported to be unrideable, and if persistent

Systemic mastocytosis with subcutaneous hemorrhage and edema in a Greyhound dog: case report and review of diagnostic criteria.

Systemic mastocytosis, characterized by infiltration of multiple organs by neoplastic mast cells, is a well-described entity in human medicine with specific criteria for diagnosis, but is ill defined in veterinary literature. Hemostatic disorders are reported in humans affected by systemic mastocytosis but have not been well described in veterinary literature. A 5-y-old, spayed female Greyhound dog had a 1-mo history of progressive ventral cutaneous edema, hemorrhage, and pain. Cytology of an antemortem aspirate from the subcutis of the ventral abdomen was suggestive of mast cell neoplasia, bu

[Postpartal clinically apparent alveolar echinococcosis in a female dog].

The lifecycle of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis comprises primarily red foxes (definitive hosts) and small rodents (intermediate hosts). Dogs can additionally be definitive hosts and in rare cases they act as accidental or dead-end host species by developing alveolar echinococcosis (AE) primarily in the liver. This report describes a clinically apparent AE that appeared 5 weeks postpartum in a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever. The bitch was presented with loss of appe tite and apathy. Radiological examination revealed dense and partially calcified, space-occupying lesions in the abd
