Pathophysiology of favism.

Haemolytic crises occurring in G6PD-deficient individuals after ingestion of fava beans (favism) are much less frequent than in the past. However, favism is a unique natural model of oxidant damage in vivo, useful for the study of senescent or damaged red blood cells (RBC) clearance from circulation. The following aspects have been considered: 1. Pathophysiology of favism, including incidence, salient features, and sequence of events. 2. RBC alterations during the haemolytic crisis: biochemical, rheological and morphological alterations occurring in RBC isolated at different stages of the cris

Mutagenic effects of aqueous extracts of Symphytum officinale L. and of its alkaloidal fractions.

Symphytum officinale L. (Boraginaceae) is a medicinal plant widely used in therapy. It roots, described in the Polish Pharmacopoeia as Radix symphyti, are recommended as expectorants, especially for children. Aqueous solutions of three alkaloid fractions obtained from infusions of Symphytum officinale L. root were tested for their antimitotic and mutagenic activity in meristematic cells of the lateral roots of Vicia faba L., var minor. Lasiocarpine, a proven carcinogen, served as a positive control. Mutagenic effects were induced by lasiocarpine, by the alkaloidal fraction I and by diluted inf

Dissecting genetic architecture of growth and yield traits in horsegram using GWAS.

Horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum), a member of the Fabaceae family, is a nutritious and low-cost legume used for both grain and fodder. This study employed a genome-wide association approach to identify loci linked to key agronomic traits in horsegram. Plant height, seed size, and shoot fresh weight were evaluated in a panel of 96 diverse genotypes. GBS was performed using the Illumina HiSeq platform, yielding 20,241 high-quality SNPs after filtering at a 5% minor allele frequency. Population structure analysis classified genotypes into three admixed subgroups. Phenotyping was conducted over t…

Comparison between direct aqueous extract and partially purified aqueous fraction of crude hydro-methanol extract of whole plant of Codariocalyx motorius (Houtt.) H. Ohashi (Desmodium gyrans) in terms of phytoconstituents and pharmacological efficacy.

Codariocalyx motorius (Desmodium gyrans) of the family Fabaceae has wide use in folklore and Ayurvedic medicine for various human ailments. A chromatographically purified aqueous fraction of hydro-methanolic extract of the whole plant (DGMAF) has been reported to possesses antioxidant, HDL enhancing, and reverse cholesterol transport efficacy. Present study assesses whether direct aqueous extract (DGA) of the plant possesses the same phytochemical and pharmacological efficacy to that of DGMAF so that a cost-effective drug development is possible. The compounds tannins, phenols, saponins, stero…

Genus Sophora: a comprehensive review on secondary chemical metabolites and their biological aspects from past achievements to future perspectives.

Sophora is deemed as one of the most remarkable genera of Fabaceae, and the third largest family of flowering plants. The genus Sophora comprises approximately 52 species, 19 varieties, and 7 forms that are widely distributed in Asia and mildly in Africa. Sophora species are recognized to be substantial sources of broad spectrum biopertinent secondary metabolites namely flavonoids, isoflavonoids, chalcones, chromones, pterocarpans, coumarins, benzofuran derivatives, sterols, saponins (mainly triterpene glycosides), oligostilbenes, and mainly alkaloids. Meanwhile, extracts and isolated compoun…

Antidepressant activity of Ceratonia siliqua L. fruit extract, a source of polyphenols.

A previous study from our laboratory has shown the facilitatory effect of Ceratonia siliqua L. (Fabaceae) on the dopaminergic function. This study investigates the involvement of monoamines in the antidepressant activity of the total polyphenol content of Ceratonia siliqua extract (CS) in mice using a tail suspension test (TST) and forced swim test (FST). The immobility time in the TST and FST were significantly reduced by CS (25 and 50 mg kg(-1), i.p.). The extract considerably attenuated the duration of immobility induced by prazosin (62.5 µg kg(-1), i.p., an α-adrenoceptor antagonist) and e…

Anti-herpes virus activity of Dunbaria bella Prain.

The herpes inhibitory effect of Dunbaria bella Prain (Fabaceae), a Thai medicinal plant traditionally used to treat viral infections was investigated. Using a bioassay-guided fractionation procedure, tertiary fractionation of a dichloromethane-methanol plant extract afforded a partially purified fraction (Fr.372) equally active against replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2. The 50% inhibitory concentration determined by a viral yield-inhibition assay was 1.21-1.25 microg/ml and the antiviral selectivity was about 17-fold. Treatment of HSV with high concentrations of Fr.372 fo…

LC-MS/MS-QTOF Based Phytochemical Characterization and In Vitro Pharmacological Potentials of the Endemic Variety, Humboldtia brunonis var. raktapushpa.

Humboldtia (Fabaceae), an endemic genus of Western Ghats (India), comprises several ecologically and ethnobotanically important species. The present study reports the first comprehensive evaluation of the phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxic potential of Humboldtia brunonis var. raktapushpa, an endemic variety to its type locality. The phytochemical profiling using LC-MS/MS-QTOF tentatively identified diverse bioactive compounds, predominantly polyphenols, flavonoids, including quinic acid, (-)-epicatechin, asperuloside, chloro…

Evaluation of the Biological Activities of Dinizia excelsa Wood Essential Oil: A Potential Phytotherapeutic Agent.

Dinizia excelsa, an Amazonian tree from the Fabaceae family, is valued for its wood, yet its biological potential is underexplored. This study analyzed its essential oil (EO), revealing 48 compounds, notably pulegone (25.3%), α-cedrol (12.87%), and thymol (11.5%). Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) parameters indicated good oral bioavailability and low toxicity. The oil exhibited moderate antioxidant activity (IC50 = 124.87 µg/mL) and low cytotoxicity (IC50 > 88 µg/mL), with hemolysis below 5%. It promoted cell proliferation and increased CD8+ lymphocytes, wi…

Tamarind genus chemical composition and biological activities.

Tamarindus indica L., the sole species in the genus Tamarind, which is a member of the subfamily Caesalpiniaceae in the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae), is extensively dispersed in many tropical and subtropical regions. This plant's Arabic name, Tamr Al-Hindi, is the basis for its English name, Tamarind. In traditional medicine, this genus has played a major role since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Folkloric medicine has traditionally used Tamarind to treat a variety of conditions, including diabetes mellitus, fever, malaria, ulcers, diarrhoea, dysentery and wounds. The primary bioactive co…

Comprehensive high-performance thin-layer chromatography analysis of Monteverdia ilicifolia leaf and its adulterants.

The leaves of Monteverdia ilicifolia (syn. Maytenus ilicifolia) are widely used in traditional South American medicine to treat gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis and ulcers. Several herbal products containing the leaves of M. ilicifolia can be found in the market. However, other species with similar leaf morphology are confounding materials, e.g. Monteverdia aquifolia (Celastraceae), Citronella gongonha (Cardiopteridaceae), Jodina rhombifolia (Santalaceae), Sorocea bonplandii (Moraceae) and Zollernia ilicifolia (Fabaceae). This study aimed to identify M. ilicifolia and distinguish it…
