A dynamic regulation of GDNF-family receptors correlates with a specific trophic dependency of cranial motor neuron subpopulations during development.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family ligands promote the survival of developing motor neurons in vivo and in vitro. However, not all neurons survive with any single ligand in culture and GDNF null mutant mice display only a partial motor neuron loss. An interesting possibility is that subpopulations of motor neurons based on their function and/or their myotopic organization require distinct members of GDNF family ligands. Because responsiveness to the different ligands depends on the expression of their cognate ligand-binding receptor we have herein addressed this issue by

Differential innervation of tissues located at traditional acupuncture points in the rat forehead and face.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the neural pathways associated with the tissues located at different traditional acupuncture points in the rat forehead and face using the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) neural tracing technique. METHODS: After injection of CTB into the tissues at GB14, ST2 and ST6 in the rat, the neural labelling associated with each acupuncture point was revealed by fluorescent immunohistochemistry of the nervous system, including the trigeminal ganglion (TRG), cervical dorsal root ganglia (DRG), spinal cord and brain. RESULTS: The CTB labelling included sensory neurons and their tran

Qianzheng powder promotes facial nerve regeneration via BDNF/TrkB/CREB pathway activation.

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve injury (FNI) is a common peripheral neuropathy that severely impairs facial function and quality of life. Qianzheng Powder (QZP) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula used to treat facial paralysis clinically, yet its neuroprotective mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of QZP on FNI and potential underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A FNI model was established in male C57BL/6 mice by performing facial nerve crush surgery. QZP (3.51 g/kg) was administered orally once daily for 14 days post-surgery. Facial function was assessed

Tissue-engineered nerve guides with mesenchymal stem cells in the facial nerve regeneration.

Nerve guides with mesenchymal stem cells have been investigated in the rat facial nerve defect model to promote peripheral nerve regeneration and shorten recovery time to improve patients' quality of life. A 7-mm facial nerve gap experimental rat model is frequently employed in facial nerve regeneration studies. Facial nerve regeneration with nerve guides is evaluated by (1) assessing myelinated fiber counts using toluidine blue staining, (2) immunohistological analysis, (3) determining the g-ratio (axon diameter/total outer diameter) of regenerated nerve on transmission electron microscopic i

The widespread action observation/execution matching system for facial expression processing.

Observing and understanding others' emotional facial expressions, possibly through motor synchronization, plays a primary role in face-to-face communication. To understand the underlying neural mechanisms, previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies investigated brain regions that are involved in both the observation/execution of emotional facial expressions and found that the neocortical motor regions constituting the action observation/execution matching system or mirror neuron system were active. However, it remains unclear (1) whether other brain regions in the limbic, ce

The origin of efferent labyrinthine fibres: a comparative study in vertebrates.

Parent cells of efferent acoustic and efferent vestibular fibers were determined anatomically in all classes of vertebrates by use of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. These neurons were found in the brainstem, in particular in the reticular formation. In the goldfish, efferent labyrinthine neurons could be demonstrated in a medial position (lateral to the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis). In the frog, efferent neurons appeared more lateral, dorsomedial to the facial motor nucleus. In reptiles and birds, efferent acoustic neurons separate from efferent vestibular neuron

Brainstem facial-motor pathways from two distinct groups of stapedius motoneurons in the cat.

To determine the brainstem origins and axonal routes of stapedius motoneurons, we labeled motoneurons by injecting cat stapedius muscles with horseradish peroxidase. Some injections were made in normal cats and some in cats in which the middle segment of the internal facial genu had been cut. By tracing labeled axons and by comparing the locations of labeled cell bodies in normal and lesioned cats, we divided stapedius motoneurons into two groups: "perifacial" and "accessory." Perifacial stapedius motoneurons have cell bodies located around the motor nucleus of the facial nerve and axons which

Induction of facial muscle neurotization by temporalis muscle transposition: literature review and animal model evaluation using horseradish peroxidase uptake.

OBJECTIVE: To study the concept of facial muscle reinnervation from the trigeminal pathway following facial nerve paralysis. DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied this phenomenon in an animal model using the neuronal marker, horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The temporalis transposition procedure was performed at varying intervals post facial nerve transection. To evaluate the trigeminal-facial reinnervation process and its timing, the zygomaticus major muscle was injected with HRP at varied periods after temporalis transposition, and histologic sections of the brainstem nuclei were examined for the fin

[Isolated oculomotor nerve palsy caused by mesencephalic hemorrhage].

A 62-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and liver damage has sudden diplopia on Nov. 4, 1992. Ocular movements of this right eye were normal, but his left eyelid was completely ptotic, and left pupil was dilated and nonreactive to light. In primary position, his left eye deviated outward, and could not move to any direction. He was diagnosed as having total oculomotor nerve palsy of the left side without any other neurological signs or symptoms; his consciousness level was alert and mental state was normal. The present case showed normal facial sensation, no facial

Craniofacial alterations following electrolytic lesions of the trigeminal motor nucleus in actively growing rats.

The objective of this study was to define further the role of the trigeminal motor nucleus (TMNu) in the postnatal ontogeny of the mammalian craniofacial skeleton. To that end, 42 male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent stereotaxic surgery at 40 days of age; 21 received small electrolytic lesions to their left-side TMNu (lesioned group) while 21 had TMNu stimulation with no actual electrolytic lesion produced (sham group). Seven rats from each group were killed at 28, 56, and 84 days postoperative to analyze trigeminal motoneuron (TMNe) count, masticatory muscle weight, and osteological growth vect

The central projections of the trigeminal, facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves: an autoradiographic study in the rat.

The central distributions of primary afferent axons in the facial, trigeminal (mandibular branch), glossopharyngeal, and vagal nerves of the rat have been re-examined using the autoradiographic tracing technique after injections of [3H]proline or [3H]leucine into their peripheral ganglia. Within the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST), the labeled terminals from VII, V, IX and X form a continuous distribution that spans the length of this nucleus. Sensory axons in VII terminate mainly within the lateral division of the rostral NST, although some of the terminals extend further caudally within

Microvascular decompression for primary hemifacial spasm. Importance of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.

There is considerable evidence that primary Hemi-Facial Spasm (HFS) is in almost all cases related to a vascular compression of the facial nerve at its Root Exit Zone (REZ) from brainstem, and that Micro-Vascular Decompression (MVD) constitutes its curative treatment. Clinical as well as electrophysiological features plead for mechanisms of the disease in structural lesions at the neural fibers (putatively: focal demyelination at origin of ephapses) and functional changes in the nuclear cells (hyperactivity of the facial nucleus). Lateral Spread Responses (LSRs) elicited by stimulation of the

The motor innervation of the soft palate. An anatomical study in guinea pigs and monkeys.

In an effort to gain a more precise understanding of the motor innervation of the soft palate, a neuroanatomical tracer (horseradish peroxidase) was injected into the vela of nine guinea pigs and four monkeys. After 48 h the animals were sacrificed and frozen frontal sections were appropriately reacted with tetramethylbenzidine and counterstained with neutral red, and then evaluated by means of light microscopy. In all specimens retrogradely labeled neurons appeared in the brain stem. The distribution patterns of these labeled cells were to a large degree comparable in both the guinea pigs and

Identification of B6SJL mSOD1(G93A) mouse subgroups with different disease progression rates.

Disease progression rates among patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) vary greatly. Although the majority of affected individuals survive 3-5 years following diagnosis, some subgroups experience a more rapidly progressing form, surviving less than 1 year, and other subgroups experience slowly progressing forms, surviving nearly 50 years. Genetic heterogeneity and environmental factors pose significant barriers in investigating patient progression rates. Similar to the case for humans, variation in survival within the mSOD1 mouse has been well documented, but different progression r

Course and distribution of facial corticobulbar tract fibres in the lower brain stem.

The course and distribution of the facial corticobulbar tract (CBT) was examined by correlating MRI of brain stem lesions with neurological symptoms and signs including central (C-FP) or peripheral facial paresis (P-FP) in 70 patients with localised infarction of the lower brain stem. C-FP occurred more often in patients with lesions of the lower pons or upper medulla of the ventromedial brain stem. Some patients with dorsolateral infarcts of the upper medulla to the lower pons showed C-FP, mostly on the lesion side. P-FP on the side of the lesion was also seen in patients with dorsolateral in

Jaw muscle spindle afferents coordinate multiple orofacial motoneurons via common premotor neurons in rats: an electrophysiological and anatomical study.

Jaw muscle spindle afferents (JMSA) in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) project to the parvocellular reticular nucleus (PCRt) and dorsomedial spinal trigeminal nucleus (dm-Vsp). A number of premotor neurons that project to the trigeminal motor nucleus (Vmo), facial nucleus (VII) and hypoglossal nucleus (XII) are also located in the PCRt and dm-Vsp. In this study, we examined whether these premotor neurons serve as common relay pool for relaying JMSA to multiple orofacial motoneurons. JMSA inputs to the PCRt and dm-Vsp neurons were verified by recording extracellular responses to elec

Facial nerve stimulation by a cochlear implant in a hemodialysis patient with bone of low mineral density.

Facial nerve stimulation by an activated cochlear implant was noted in a 56-year-old patient who had undergone cochlear implant with a Nucleus 22 implant 2 years previously as treatment for total sensorineural hearing loss following meningitis at age 54. Past history was complicated by total renal failure for which hemodialysis had been required during the past 13 years. Facial spasm occurred 5 months postoperatively with activation of the basal electrodes (channels 13 and 15 of the implant). The facial stimulation was eliminated by deprogramming these electrodes. High-resolusion computed tomo

Corpuscular bodies in the palate of the rat. 2. Innervation and central projection.

The source of innervation of the corpuscular bodies in the palate and the central projections of the afferent fibres of the entire palate was studied in rats by transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) and with substance P (SP) immunohistochemistry. WGA-HRP injected into the incisal papilla was taken up by the nerve fibres that terminated in the corpuscles. Retrogradely labelled neurons were observed in the trigeminal ganglion as well as anterogradely labelled terminals in the dorsolateral part of the spinal trigeminal nucleus and in the

Pharmacological modulation of ventral tegmental area neurons elicits changes in trigeminovascular sensory processing and is accompanied by glycemic changes: Implications for migraine.

BACKGROUND: Imaging migraine premonitory studies show increased midbrain activation consistent with the ventral tegmental area, an area involved in pain modulation and hedonic feeding. We investigated ventral tegmental area pharmacological modulation effects on trigeminovascular processing and consequent glycemic levels, which could be involved in appetite changes in susceptible migraine patients. METHODS: Serotonin and pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide receptors immunohistochemistry was performed in ventral tegmental area parabrachial pigmented nucleus of male Sprague Dawley
