Recognition and classification of facial expression using artificial intelligence as a key of early detection in neurological disorders.

The recognition and classification of facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) presents a promising avenue for early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative disorders. This narrative review critically examines the current state of AI-driven facial expression analysis in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. We discuss the potential of AI techniques, including deep learning and computer vision, to accurately interpret and categorize subtle changes in facial expressions associated with these pathological conditions. Furthermore, we exp

Elevated accuracy in recognition of subliminal happy facial expressions in patients with panic disorder after psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anxiety disorders (ADs) often display hypervigilance to threat information, although this response may be less pronounced following psychotherapy. This study aims to investigate the unconscious recognition performance of facial expressions in patients with panic disorder (PD) post-treatment, shedding light on alterations in their emotional processing biases. METHODS: Patients with PD (n=34) after (exposure-based) cognitive behavior therapy and healthy controls (n=43) performed a subliminal affective recognition task. Emotional facial expressions (fearful, happy, o

Revisiting emotion recognition in different types of temporal lobe epilepsy: The influence of facial expression intensity.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) can induce various difficulties in recognizing emotional facial expressions (EFE), particularly for negative valence emotions. However, these difficulties have not been systematically examined according to the localization of the epileptic focus. For this purpose, we used a forced-choice recognition task in which faces expressing fear, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, or happiness were presented in different intensity levels from moderate to high intensity. The first objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of emotional intensity on the recognition of di

Impairment in recognition of emotional facial expressions in Alzheimer's disease is represented by EEG theta and alpha responses.

Behavioral studies have shown that the recognition of facial expressions may be impaired in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The identification and recognition of a facial expression might be represented by event-related brain oscillations. The present study aims to analyze EEG event-related oscillations and determine the electrophysiological indicators of impaired facial expression recognition in AD patients. EEGs of 30 healthy controls and 30 AD patients were recorded during their perception of three different facial expressions (angry, happy, neutral). Event-related power spectrum an

Cinemotion, a Program of Cognitive Remediation to Improve the Recognition and Expression of Facial Emotions in Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognition, especially in the recognition and expression of facial emotions, aspects of communication profoundly interlinked in an embodied approach of cognition. Nevertheless, many training programs have been developed that focus on either of these deficits but not both. We therefore designed a training program, Cinemotion, intended to remedy the 2 deficits and investigated its feasibility and effects in patients with schizophrenia. Design: Thirty-one patients undergoing treatment for schizophrenia and presenting deficit in emotion

Impairments in Negative Facial Emotion Recognition in Chinese Schizophrenia Patients Detected With a Newly Designed Task.

Facial emotion recognition has been found to be impaired in schizophrenia, although overall results have been inconclusive. A new set of facial emotion stimuli with Chinese faces was developed, using static and dynamic avatars, the identification of which were subsequently validated in 562 healthy control subjects. This test was then used to identify facial emotion recognition accuracy in 44 patients with schizophrenia and 41 healthy controls. Overall, patients identified facial emotions significantly worse than healthy controls (p = 0.018) with a significant main effect for type of emotion (p

Improvement of facial affect recognition in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder under methylphenidate.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Some authors draw a connection between the dopaminergic pathways and emotional perception. The present study is based on that association and addresses the question whether methylphenidate and the resulting amelioration of the disturbed dopamine metabolism lead to an improvement of the facial affect recognition abilities in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: A computer test was conducted on 21 participants, aged 7-14 years and with a diagnosis of ADHD - some with comorbid oppositional defiant disorder - conducted the FEFA (Fran

Is the emotion recognition deficit associated with frontotemporal dementia caused by selective inattention to diagnostic facial features?

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severely impaired social and emotional behaviour, including emotion recognition deficits. Though fear recognition impairments seen in particular neurological and developmental disorders can be ameliorated by reallocating attention to critical facial features, the possibility that similar benefits can be conferred to patients with FTD has yet to be explored. In the current study, we examined the impact of presenting distinct regions of the face (whole face, eyes-only, and eyes-removed) on the ability to

Facial emotion recognition and its correlation with executive functions in bipolar I patients and healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to recognize facial emotions is altered in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD) during mood episodes and even in euthymia, while cognitive functioning is similarly impaired. This recognition is considered a fundamental skill for successful social interaction. However, it is unclear whether the ability to recognize facial emotions is correlated with the cognitive deficits observed in BD. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) and its correlation with executive function (EF) in BD I patients during mania, depression and e

Alexithymic and somatisation scores in patients with temporomandibular pain disorder correlate with deficits in facial emotion recognition.

Current studies suggest dysfunctional emotional processing as a key factor in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Investigating facial emotion recognition (FER) may offer an elegant and reliable way to study emotional processing in patients with TMD. Twenty patients with TMD and the same number of age-, sex- and education-matched controls were measured with the Facially Expressed Emotion Labelling (FEEL) test, the 26-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-26), the Screening for Somatoform Symptoms (SOMS-2a), the German Pain Questionnaire and the 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating S

Facial emotion recognition and its relationship to symptomatic, subjective, and functional outcomes in outpatients with chronic schizophrenia.

Outcome in schizophrenia is multidimensional and consists of clinical and psychosocial domains. Difficulties in affect recognition are a hallmark of schizophrenia, but there is little research investigating the consequences of this deficit on patients' psychosocial status. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship of facial affect recognition and treatment outcomes in terms of psychopathology, quality of life (QOL), and psychosocial functioning. We investigated 40 regular attendees of a specialized schizophrenia outpatient clinic who had been stable both from a symptomatic and a med

Selective impairment of facial recognition due to a haematoma restricted to the right fusiform and lateral occipital region.

A 67 year old right handed Japanese man developed prosopagnosia caused by a haemorrhage. His only deficit was the inability to perceive and discriminate unfamiliar faces, and to recognise familiar faces. He did not show deficits in visual or visuospatial perception of non-facial stimuli, alexia, visual agnosia, or topographical disorientation. Brain MRI showed a haematoma limited to the right fusiform and the lateral occipital region. Single photon emission computed tomography confirmed that there was no decreased blood flow in the opposite left cerebral hemisphere. The present case indicates

Childhood facial emotion recognition: Associations with the parental emotional environment and child emotional and behavioral problems.

Impairments in negative facial emotion recognition (FER) are widely reported in children with internalizing and externalizing problems; however, it remains unclear whether these impairments reflect response biases or reduced discrimination accuracy. Children's emotion socialization is informed by the emotional climate at home, yet parental mental health and Expressed Emotion (EE) are rarely examined together in relation to child FER. This study examined associations between parental mental health, EE, the severity of child internalizing and externalizing problems, and children's recognition of

Evaluating the pungency perception of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. oil by facial recognition techniques and machine learning.

Zanthoxylum armatum DC. (ZAD) oil is a kind of popular seasoning for its unique flavor and numbing taste. Pungency is characterized as a numbing and stimulating sensation in ZAD oil. This study aimed to objectively assess ZAD oil pungency by combining sensory evaluations with facial expression analysis. The contents of four major pungency compounds, including hydroxy-α-sanshool, hydroxy-β-sanshool, hydroxy-ε-sanshool, and hydroxy-γ-sanshool, were determined. Among them, the content of hydroxy -α-sanshool was 242.741 ± 18.293 mg/mL. The pungency intensity increased with higher Scoville pungency

Age Differences in Mental State Inference of Sarcasm: Contributions of Facial Emotion Recognition and Cognitive Performance.

OBJECTIVES: Older age is associated with poorer ability to accurately infer mental states, but some mental states are more complex than others. Sarcasm is a complex mental state because the literal and intended meaning of a speaker's words are in opposition. Individuals must rely on additional cues (e.g., facial expressions, intonation) for accurate inference. We hypothesized that understanding of sarcastic versus sincere exchanges would be more sensitive to age-related difficulty in mental state understanding. METHODS: We examined accuracy at identifying sarcasm among 263 adults (ages 18-90

Adults with a history of childhood maltreatment with and without mental disorders show alterations in the recognition of facial expressions.

Background: Individuals with child maltreatment (CM) experiences show alterations in emotion recognition (ER). However, previous research has mainly focused on populations with specific mental disorders, which makes it unclear whether alterations in the recognition of facial expressions are related to CM, to the presence of mental disorders or to the combination of CM and mental disorders, and on ER of emotional, rather than neutral facial expressions. Moreover, commonly, recognition of static stimulus material was researched. Objective: We assessed recognition of dynamic (closer to real life)

Facial recognition accuracy in photographs of Thai neonates with Down syndrome among physicians and the Face2Gene application.

Down syndrome (DS) is typically recognizable in those who present with multiple dysmorphism, especially in regard to facial phenotypes. However, as the presentation of DS in neonates is less obvious, a phenotype-based presumptive diagnosis is more challenging. Recently, an artificial intelligence (AI) application, Face2Gene, was developed to help physicians recognize specific genetic syndromes by using two-dimensional facial photos. As of yet, there has not been any study comparing accuracy among physicians or applications. Our objective was to compare the facial recognition accuracy of DS in

Evidence for Anger Saliency during the Recognition of Chimeric Facial Expressions of Emotions in Underage Ebola Survivors.

One of the crucial features defining basic emotions and their prototypical facial expressions is their value for survival. Childhood traumatic experiences affect the effective recognition of facial expressions of negative emotions, normally allowing the recruitment of adequate behavioral responses to environmental threats. Specifically, anger becomes an extraordinarily salient stimulus unbalancing victims' recognition of negative emotions. Despite the plethora of studies on this topic, to date, it is not clear whether this phenomenon reflects an overall response tendency toward anger recogniti

Psychopathy and facial emotion recognition ability in patients with bipolar affective disorder with or without delinquent behaviors.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that patients with bipolar disorder are more prone to violence and have more criminal behaviors than general population. A strong relationship between criminal behavior and inability to empathize and imperceptions to other person's feelings and facial expressions increases the risk of delinquent behaviors. In this study, we aimed to investigate the deficits of facial emotion recognition ability in euthymic bipolar patients who committed an offense and compare with non-delinquent euthymic patients with bipolar disorder. METHOD: Fifty-five euthymic patients with del

Association of enhanced limbic response to threat with decreased cortical facial recognition memory response in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Recognition memory of faces is impaired in patients with schizophrenia, as is the neural processing of threat-related signals, but how these deficits interact to produce symptoms is unclear. The authors used an affective face recognition paradigm to examine possible interactions between cognitive and affective neural systems in schizophrenia. METHOD: Blood-oxygen-level-dependent response was examined by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (3 Tesla) in healthy comparison subjects (N=21) and in patients with schizophrenia (N=12) or schizoaffective disorder, depressed type
