[Cross-Informant Agreement Between Parent-Reported and Adolescent Self-Reported Quality of Life in children with externalising symptoms].

BACKGROUND: It is well-known phenomena both in clinical practice and research, that there is a discrepancy between the parents' and children's report about children's Quality of Life (QoL). The purpose of our research was to examine the differences in self and caregiver's proxy report of child's QoL. We also compared mothers', fathers' and other caregivers' reports of children's QoL. METHODS: Patients with externalizing symptoms in their history, aged 13-18 years were selected from the Vadaskert Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital and Outpatient Clinic. We used the Inventory of Quality o

The Role of Fathers in the Intergenerational Transmission of Obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to synthesize recent evidence demonstrating that paternal influences can significantly affect child obesity risk through biological, psychosocial, and behavioral pathways and to highlight implications for clinical practice, public health, and research. RECENT FINDINGS: Paternal obesity influences offspring metabolic health through three primary mechanisms. Biologically, paternal obesity alters sperm epigenetic signatures, which are transmissible to offspring and modifiable through preconception lifestyle interventions. Behaviorally, fathers' dieta

Fathers' experiences with their preterm babies admitted to neonatal intensive care unit: A multi-method study.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate fathers' emotional experiences of their infant's preterm birth and subsequent stay in neonatal intensive care unit. BACKGROUND: When a baby is born preterm, there is also the premature interruption of the process of preparation for fatherhood. As a result, the impact on fathers of the preterm birth can bring negative consequences for the development of father-infant relationship. DESIGN: A multi-method approach was used which included ethnographic observation, semi-structured interviews with fathers, a self-report questionnaire and clinical infor

Time to father.

This paper reports the qualitative findings from 40 couples involved in a study exploring men's post-natal mental health. Interviews were conducted with individuals soon after the birth of their first child. Findings suggest that new fathers want to be more involved in the direct care and nurturing of their children than their fathers were with them. Discourses which construct fathers and inform social structures have not kept pace with men's changed attitudes and role expectations limiting the options available to men as fathers. In particular men's employment circumstances figure in their ex

Angry responses to infant challenges: parent, marital, and child genetic factors associated with harsh parenting.

This study examined genetic and environmental influences on harsh parenting of adopted 9-month-olds (N = 503), with an emphasis on positive child-, parent-, and family-level characteristics. Evocative gene-environment correlation (rGE) was examined by testing the effect of both positive and negative indices of birth parent temperament on adoptive parents' harsh parenting. Adoptive fathers' harsh parenting was inversely related to birth mother positive temperament, indicating evocative rGE, as well as to marital quality. Adoptive parents' negative temperamental characteristics were related to h

Longitudinal Associations Among Low-Income Mothers' and Fathers' Parenting and Relationships with Children and Adolescent Depression.

Few studies have examined the associations among quality of parent-child relationships, parenting, and adolescent depression in samples of low-income mothers and fathers with large numbers of nonresidential fathers. This study used the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing data (N = 3,384) to examine the longitudinal associations among parent-child closeness, harsh parenting, and neglect when children were nine years old and adolescent depression at age 15. The findings indicated that children who perceived having close relationships with mothers and fathers at age nine reported significantly l

Confidence in Attachment Relationships and Marital Status as Protective Factors for Self-Perceived Parental Role and In-Person Visitation with Children Among Incarcerated Fathers.

The study aimed at investigating the role of confidence in attachment relationships and marital status as protective factors for incarcerated fathers' self-perceived parental role and in-person contacts with their children. Participants included 150 inmate fathers and 145 nonincarcerated control fathers who provided background sociodemographic information and completed two self-reports, the Attachment Style Questionnaire and the Self-Perception of Parental Role. A two-phased cluster analytic plan allowed us to highlight two profiles of self-perceived parental roles, with incarceration and low

Emotion Regulation and Empathy in Child Abuse Potential: Gender Differences in Parents.

The Social Information Processing model suggests that impairments in parental characteristics (cognitive and affective) can lead to important dysfunctions in parenting. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among risk of maltreatment (Child Abuse Potential, CAP), emotional regulation, and empathy, exploring gender differences for the possible moderating role of empathy in the relationship between emotion regulation and CAP. A community sample of 110 fathers and 149 mothers of Italian children, aged 6 to 14 years (M = 9.6; standard deviation [SD] = 2.3), was recruited. Correlational

Impact of maternal depression across the first 6 years of life on the child's mental health, social engagement, and empathy: The moderating role of oxytocin.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal depression across the postbirth period has long-term negative consequences for infant development. Little is known of the neurobiological underpinnings, but they could involve oxytocin, a neuropeptide that is dysfunctional in depression and is implicated in birth and parenting. METHOD: The authors recruited a community cohort of women with high or low depression scores 2 days after childbirth and measured depression again at 6 and 9 months. When the child was 6, the authors evaluated the families of 46 chronically depressed mothers and 103 mothers reporting no depression s

Examining indicators of psychosocial risk and resilience in parents of autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Parents of autistic children experience increased levels of caregiver strain and adverse mental health outcomes, even in comparison to parents of children with other neurodevelopmental disabilities. Previous studies have largely attributed these increased levels of mental health concerns to their child behavioral concerns and autism symptomatology, but less attention has been given to other potential child factors, such as child adaptive functioning. Additionally, little is known about potential protective factors, such as parents' emotion regulation (ER) abilities, that may amelio

The relationship between parental awareness of sexual abuse and children's skills to say "no".

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual abuse is a global and multidimensional social problem and causes devastating and permanent psychological, emotional, cognitive, behavioural, physical, sexual and interpersonal sequelae. This study examines the relationship between the ability to say "no" and parental awareness of sexual abuse in 4th grade primary school students. METHODS: The study was conducted between April 2022 and June 2022 in primary schools in the central district of a province in north-eastern Turkey. The sample consisted of 310 students enrolled in 4th grade and their parents. We collected t

The association between maternal and paternal parenting styles and adolescents' overall mental problem: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental problems are complex and increasingly prevalent. Parenting style is a key modifiable factor, yet differences between maternal and paternal influences remain underexplored. METHODS: A cohort of 8,842 Chinese adolescents underwent dual-wave assessments (Sep 2022 to Sep 2023). Parenting styles were assessed using short Chinese version of the Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostra scale. Mental problems were assessed using Mental Health Inventory of Middle School Students, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Mixed-effect models explored ass

The presence of a stepfather and child physical abuse, as reported by a sample of Brazilian mothers in Rio de Janeiro.

OBJECTIVE: Substitute fathers are often reported to commit child abuse at higher rates than birth (i.e., putative genetic) fathers. Due to the paucity of studies, especially in developing countries, and to some conflicting results from developed countries regarding the identity of perpetrators of less extreme forms of physical abuse of children in stepfamilies, the aim of this study was to assess whether the presence of a stepfather would constitute a risk factor for violence against Brazilian children, as reported by their mothers. METHODS: Three hundred eighty five women with a current male

Reciprocal relations between parent-adolescent closeness and adolescent depressive symptoms across the pre-to-post COVID-19 pandemic.

This study examined gender-specific, process-oriented associations between parent-adolescent closeness and adolescent depressive symptoms using three-wave data from the China Family Panel Study (2018: pre-pandemic; 2020: pandemic outbreak; 2022: post-pandemic). Participants included 841 girls (Mage = 14.99 years in 2018, SD = 2.04, 87.2% Han ethnicity) and 939 boys (Mage = 14.89 years, SD = 1.99, 87.1% Han ethnicity). Bivariate latent change score models revealed that lower closeness consistently predicted subsequent greater increases in depression, regardless of the gender of parent or adoles

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Fathers' Food Parenting Practices and Children's Diets.

Racial and ethnic disparities in children's diets are prevalent. Little is known about how fathers' food parenting practices may contribute to these disparities. We examined racial and ethnic variations in food parenting practices and their associations with 2-6-year-old children's diets in a cross-sectional sample of U.S. fathers surveyed in 2021-2023 (N = 1015; 16% Asian, 9% Black, 6% Hispanic, 70% White; Mage = 37 years) using path analysis. Fathers' food parenting practices were significantly associated with children's diets, yet little evidence emerged that fathers' food parenting practic

The impact of childhood maltreatment on paternal antenatal bonding: the mediating role of antenatal depression.

BACKGROUND: As fathers become more involved in pregnancy and early parenting, more research attention has been given to their emotional connection with their unborn child. The transition to fatherhood is a critical developmental phase involving psychological and relational changes that shape paternal identity and bonding with the fetus. However, the factors influencing prenatal father-infant bonding remain unclear. This study examines whether emotional abuse and neglect experienced in childhood impact paternal bonding during pregnancy, and whether antenatal depressive symptoms mediate this rel

Longitudinal study on the predictors of parental stress in mothers and fathers of toddlers.

AIM: Longitudinal study on the predictors of parental stress in mothers and fathers of toddlers. BACKGROUND: To study whether anxiety, depression, or marital problems increase the parenting stress in parents of toddlers. METHODS: At early pregnancy, 2 - 3 months, and 2 - 3 years after delivery, 214 low-risk couples filled in questionnaires on their marital relationship, social support, child's temperament, and self-evaluated competence in routine care-taking. In hierarchical regression analyses, they were used as predictors of parental stress. RESULTS: Those mothers who in early pregnancy h

Beyond illness severity: transdiagnostic cognitive vulnerabilities as independent predictors of psychological distress in parents of children with rare genetic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Parents of children with rare genetic disorders are at increased risk of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. While previous research has primarily focused on illness-related factors, less is known about the contribution of transdiagnostic cognitive vulnerabilities to parental psychological distress. AIM: This study examined whether intolerance of uncertainty, distress tolerance, and tendency to worry predict parental depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms beyond the severity of the child's health status. METHODS: The study included 184 parents (92 mother-father dyads) o

Associations between hair endocannabinoid concentrations and parental depressive symptoms: A longitudinal study of mothers, fathers, and their offspring up to two years postpartum.

BACKGROUND: About one in five mothers and one in ten fathers experience postpartum depression, with adverse consequences for family health and child development. The aetiology of postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) is characterised within a biopsychosocial framework, yet the underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The endocannabinoid system (ECS), which interacts with the glucocorticoid system and is implicated in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders, has not yet been investigated in relation to PPDS. Moreover, longitudinal investigations including both mother
