Tissue engineered heart valves (TEHVs) may provide a permanent solution to congenital heart valve disease by permitting somatic valve growth in the pediatric patient. However, to date, TEHV studies have focused primarily on collagen, the dominant component of valve extracellular matrix (ECM). Temporal decreases in other ECM components, such as the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), generally decrease as cells produce more collagen under mechanically loaded states; nevertheless, GAGs represent a key component of the valve ECM, providing structural stability and hydration to the leaflets. PURPOSE: The development of tissue-engineered blood vessels provides a new source of donors for coronary artery bypass grafting and peripheral blood vessel transplantation. Fibrin fiber has good biocompatibility and is an ideal tissue engineering vascular scaffold, but its mechanical property needs improvement.
METHODS: We mixed polyurethane (PU) and fibrin to prepare the PU/fibrin vascular scaffolds by using electrospinning technology in order to enhance the mechanical properties of fibrin scaffold. We investigated the morphological, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, degradation, blood an

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) represents a sight-threatening condition that requires surgical intervention. While current surgical approaches are effective, they present notable limitations, including stringent postoperative positioning requirements and a steep surgical learning curve. In this study, we developed a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-based synthetic hydrogel as a retinal break sealant, leveraging its unique tissue-adhesive properties. Our results demonstrated excellent ocular biocompatibility of GelMA, with maintained cell viability exceeding 90% across multiple retinal cel

Fibrin glue-soaked gelatin sponge (FGGS) has been used for tissue sealing in neurosurgical practice, but too rapid clotting of fibrin glue occasionally prevents good fixation of FGGS. Dilution of thrombin may provide adequate manipulation time between mixing fibrinogen and thrombin on gelatin sponge and application into the tissue defects. The present study characterized the effect of thrombin dilution on the adhesion strength of FGGS and retrospectively assessed the clinical usage of the dilution for filling dead space or sealing arachnoid defect in 255 cases who underwent transsphenoidal sur

Repair of oral soft-tissue injuries remains challenging due to the moist, bacteria-rich, and mechanically active oral environment, as well as the limitations of current sealants in wet adhesion, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, bioactivity, and sealing durability. Here, we report an injectable hydrogel sealant (PAG) composed of tetra-armed poly(ethylene glycol) succinimidyl succinate and amine-functionalized gelatin, which rapidly forms in situ via NHS-amine coupling without external triggers. The optimized formulation undergoes gelation within seconds and exhibits robust mechanical prop

Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic, inflammatory, and progressive skin disease mainly involved in the anogenital area. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a fibrin adhesive-concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) used for tissue repair and angiogenesis. In this study, we explored the effects of PRF on VLS patients, further to utilize the established VLS animal model, to confirm the therapeutic effect of PRF and regulation on the TGF-β/SMAD3 pathway. Among the 46 VLS patients included in the analysis, injectable RPF (i-PRF) treatment improved the symptoms of VLS. The immunohistochemical analy

BACKGROUND: ISHF is currently most commonly done using Glued IOL and Yamane techniques.[1-7] A new ISHF technique (5F - Flangeless, Flapless, Fibrin-glue-less, Fully covered, Fully tucked) offers a simplified, safer, faster, and more stable approach.
PURPOSE: We present the 5F technique and its advantages over other methods.
SYNOPSIS: Two L-shaped conjunctival peritomies and two 2.5 mm vertical half-thickness scleral grooves 180° apart, perpendicular to limbus, are made. Two partial-thickness scleral pockets are dissected from the grooves, away from the surgeon on the left-hand side and towa

RATIONALE: Long-term implantation of anterior phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) can lead to progressive corneal endothelial cell loss, ultimately necessitating explantation. Although scleral tunnel approaches reduce corneal trauma during lens exchange, postoperative hypotony due to wound microleakage is an uncommon but vision-threatening complication. This report aims to present the 1st documented clinical case in which fibrin glue was successfully used to seal microleakage-induced hypotony following pIOL explantation and simultaneous toric implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation.

Anophthalmic socket cysts are challenging to remove and incomplete excision has been shown to increase the risk of recurrence. This case series describes a novel technique utilising the fibrin sealant Tisseel (Baxter AG, Vienna, Austria) to retain the socket cyst integrity during surgical removal to facilitate its complete excision. Five patients were included and followed up for a minimum of 1 year, and there were no signs of recurrence in any of the cases. The surgical technique is described and illustrated. This technique is a safe way of simplifying challenging socket cyst surgery.

BACKGROUND: Pleurodesis performed either by pleurectomy or pleural abrasion is recommended in the approach to primary spontaneous pneumothorax to avoid recurrence. However, the efficacy of parietal pleural abrasion in producing pleurodesis is questioned. This study aims to determine the efficacy of apical abrasion alone, abrasion plus fibrin sealant application, and pleurectomy in producing pleurodesis in rabbits.
METHODS: Rabbits were subjected to video-assisted thoracic surgery alone (control) or to video-assisted thoracic surgery with apical gauze abrasion, abrasion plus fibrin sealant ins

BACKGROUND: Pterygium, a growth of the conjunctiva over the cornea, is a progressive disease leading in advanced stages to visual impairment, restriction of ocular motility, chronic inflammation and cosmetic concerns. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice, but recurrence can be a problem. Currently the best surgical option in terms of recurrence is conjunctival autograft. To date the most common surgical methods of attaching conjunctival autografts to the sclera are through suturing or fibrin glue. Each method presents its own advantages and disadvantages. Sutures require considerable sk

PURPOSE: To report a sutureless method of amniotic membrane fixation using fibrin glue in two cases of symptomatic bullous keratopathy with poor visual potential.
METHODS: Under topical anesthesia, the loose epithelium was debrided up to 1.0 mm from the limbus and fibrin glue was applied uniformly and thinly onto the corneal surface. Cryopreserved amniotic membrane was evenly placed over the cornea and once a firm and uniform adhesion was achieved, excess membrane was trimmed off. A bandage contact lens was applied.
RESULTS: In both the cases, complete relief from symptoms was obtained and 3

Fibrin adhesives have been advocated as a protective sealant in high-risk colonic anastomoses to prevent leakage. To assess the effect of fibrin glue sealing on the healing ischemic anastomosis, we compared the healing of sutured colonic anastomoses in the rat, with and without fibrin adhesive (Groups IA and IB), and ischemic anastomoses with and without fibrin adhesive (Groups IIA and IIB). On days two, four, and seven, 10 animals in each group were sacrificed. Adhesion formation was scored, and the in situ bursting pressure was measured. The collagen concentration and degradation were estima

Background Skin grafting plays a vital role in post-burn and post-traumatic wound management. Split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) are traditionally fixed using staples or sutures, which have tedious application and their removal necessitates painkillers, medical equipment, and human intervention. As an alternative, fibrin sealant is a biological tissue adhesive, composed of thrombin, calcium, and fibrinogen. Fibrin sealant promotes hemostasis and acts as a biological adherent. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes (graft take, wound healing and complications) of fibrin
