A major study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Bancroftian filariasis in 9 health districts located mainly on the east and north coast of Madagascar between 1995 and 1997. A young girl presented with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) with narrowing of the retrohepatic segment of inferior vena cava (VC). Dorsal cavoatrial bypass (DCAB) was unsuccessful due to thrombotic occlusion of the graft. A limited autopsy revealed occlusion of the retrohepatic segment of IVC and the terminal parts of the three major hepatic veins. Caval occlusion was just above the level of the superior hepatic veins, and caused by a transverse fibrous shelf. An adult filarial worm was found amidst pericaval fibrosis. Filariasis should be included as a possible aetiological factor in chronic BCS.

We report the first case of inflammation of the retinal pigment epithelium and retinal vasculities presumably caused by microfilaria of Wucheria bancrofti and discuss its possible pathogenesis. Therapy with diethyl carbamazine citrate resulted in rapid resolution of the inflammation.

A study of relations between pruritus after doses of chloroquine and on the one hand the infection by Mansonella perstans (filariasis frequent in some areas but pathogenic) and on the other hand the infection by Onchocerca volvulus (filariasis frequent in some other areas but not very pathogenic) was carried out in two villages in Ivory Coast. A case is reported of Bancroftian filariasis and acute immune complex glomerulonephritis in a 44-year-old man. Renal biopsy showed microfilariae and large numbers of eosinophils in the glomeruli (eosinophilic glomerulonephritis). The absence of other aetiological factors suggests that the glomerulonephritis may have been of filarial origin.

A survey was carried out among persons residing in 8 villages in the Province of West Kalimantan, Indonesia to determine the prevalence of filariasis. Finger tip blood smears were obtained at night from over 3,000 people and microfilariae of Brugia malayi were found in 108 (3.5%) and Wuchereria bancrofti in 10 (0.3%).
